We should rightly rejoice in our accomplishments here at R.F.A., which, we feel, have been worthy of note during these past three years, but the immensity—and the cold indifference of the world we are now entering, bids us to be proud “respectfully,” rightly discerning our own lack of experience The world will give most of us the badge of “average Joe,” while, perhaps, some fortunate few are destined for greatness. It is not for us, now, as newcomers, to judge. Certainly many talents have been displayed by the class of 1960 which, with luck, and diligence, will carry them to the stars For all, we hope, this year’s De-O-Wain-Sta will be a flash across the sky, highlighting the activities and achievements of a star-studded youth.... TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1960 .... As you become a graduate of Rome Free Acad- emy, you will receive not only a diploma but also a new responsibility. Because of the education you have acquired, you will be expected to measure up to higher standards of achievement—in your voca- tion, in civic leadership, in service to mankind and in the ideals by which you live. May you carry this responsibility with credit to your Alma Mater. Lyndon H. Strough LYNDON H. STROUGH, Superintendent THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated, Left to Right: C. Eugene Roe, Mrs. John S. ‘Right: Nicholas J. Bush, Robert C. Bidwell, Charles Pendorf, E. Mark Wolf, President. Standing, Left to H. Edkins, Russ P. Destito. 6 The Board of Education is responsible for the new facil- ities made available to stu- dents in Rome schools. Thanks to the work of the Board, we enjoy the advan- tages of a modern educational system. We, the class of 1960, extend our sincere gratitude to the Board of Education for its extensive and foresighted planning. A MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS FROM .... CARL S. PAIGE, Principal During your years at Rome Free Academy you have witnessed the most dramatic sci- entific developments that have occurred in history. Man is truly about to step “Out of this World.” May the training you have received here assist you not only to live in an expanding physical world but also to widen your intellectual horizons. MYRON WHITTEMORE, Vice-Principal Stars all! Set your space course straight. Never falter from your goal. And may your light so shine that those less fortu- nate than you may be guided into the galaxy of success and happiness. DEDICATION He that is thy friend indeed, He will help thee in thy need. Richard Barnfield We, the class of 1960, proudly dedicate our yearbook to MRS. HELEN WOLF. We wish to so dedicate the 1960 De-O-Wain-Sta to show our sincere appreciation of a truly fine teacher. With her pleasant personality and cheerful greeting, Mrs. Wolf has earned the respect and affection of all the stu- dents and faculty. Because she is always willing to help, we feel free to call upon her whenever we are in need of advice or assistance. JEAN AKERS Reading Rain M.A. Ed cuse. F.T.A Harper, Syra- ELTON W. PELKEY B.A., M.A. Syracuse Boston M.A. Albany, Syracuse ELIZABETH WHITAKER Miss Elizabeth Whitaker, Associate Director of Physical Education in charge of girls’ program, has resigned after a long period of devoted service. When Miss Whitaker entered the doors of RFA for the first time, little did she realize that through her teaching here, she would become a prominent and well liked figure in the hearts of students and faculty. With integrity and deep sincerity, Miss Whitaker, taught the girls of RFA the value of physical fitness, and the true meaning of sportsmanship. Her work never ended. When school was dismissed, she could be found supervis- ing intramural sports, directing service clubs, and organiz- ing programs for the Saturday play days. Miss Whitaker, we deeply regret your leaving us. Your long and sincere service has been more than appreciated by the students of RFA. We know that whatever you have planned for the future will prove successful. The students and faculty of RFA will always remember you and wish you happiness. IN MEMORIAM RICHARDSON The star is not extinguished when it sets Upon the dull horizon; it but goes To shine in other skies. Horatius Bonar The students and faculty of Rome Free Academy deeply regret the passing away of one of our most beloved instructors. Mr. Richardson’s friendly attitude, sense of humor, and sincere de- votion to his chosen profession, endeared him to all of us. His spirit will long remain as a part of the faculty, and his teaching as a part of the lives of his students. LEBEWOHL This year Rome Free Academy will lose a fine teacher and a wonderful person when Miss Harriet M. Blood leaves us. Miss Blood has taught German at R.F.A. for thirty-five years, and has sponsored der deutsche Verein (the German Club) over the years for those students who were sincerely inter- ested in supplementing their German language skills with cultural material and fun. Miss Blood will be remembered by the stu- dents and teachers who know her: first, as a human being; second, as a fine teacher. She will be re- membered as a human being because her cheerful attitude toward school and work made life at Rome Free Academy more enjoyable. She will be remem- bered as a teacher because she endured with pa- tience the mistakes of struggling students and endowed these students with an appreciation for the mental discipline of a foreign language. We thank her for what she has done for us, and hope she will enjoy the pursuits she will now take up. Lebewohl farewell. While Other Stars Are BRIGHT SOME MAKE US BEAM This year under the guidance and direction of Mrs. Bates “A Quiet Summer” was presented as the class of °60’s Senior Play. The comedy was a hit with adults and students alike; it was a sell-out! The Seniors all pitched in to make the play a success, some by actually taking part in the play, others by working backstage or on the sets. The members of the cast were: Barbara Kanoff, Barbara MacLeod, Barbara Adolfi, Louise Geller, Sheila Lobenhofer, Miche- lene Destito, Bonnie Bailey, Patty Paige, Liane Cooper, Patricia Treonze, Lorin Salob, Jack Alexander, Jim Maura, Doug Birnie, Anthony Ceresoli, Ronald Trificana, Alan Davis, Stanley Kenjarski. At Rome Free Academy, the majority of our time is spent in the classroom. Even though we may treasure our memories of dances and football games, the knowledge which we have gained here will be more of a determining factor in our future than these other memories. Let us appreciate the value of scholastic achievement. OTHERS OUR MINDS IGNITE STELLAR JOURNEYS WITH MUSCLE WERE MADE Slide down... WHILE SOME TAUGHT “USTED” MEANS “ YOU.” The class of 1960 has had the privilege of being taught and influenced toward good through the tireless efforts of one who has devoted her life to the service of enlightening others. Miss Louise Kingsley, our activity co-ordinator, our teacher, and our friend. has been a valued aid in study and an ever-present help in our class activities. Though we have seemed, unfortunately, to have taken her efforts, as well as the efforts of others, for granted, in the thoughtless way students are prone to do, the wonderful work she has done, has immeasurably added to the level of activity at Rome Free Academy. Though we are sorry for the classes that follow, who will have to do without her service and friendship, we are glad that she chose to teach us this year, the last before what we hope will be a long and happy retirement, in which she may, perhaps, get to participate in some of those things which she sacrificed in order to help us. It would be impossible to determine the amount of good she has done for RFA through the years, even less to thank her adequately. We can only express sincere appreciation for the help she has been in the short moment we have been here as a class, knowing that praise and glory were not the goals she esteemed most high when she chose the path of service. On these days, as we hurtle through time and space innumerable events have taken place: football games, dates, dances, report cards, parties, and even a flu epidemic. It is im possible to evaluate each senior’s individual achieve ments in his three years at RFA. We can only mention, in a passing fashion. these important highlights of our journey. Initial take-off was a 9:57 (September 1957 with Stanley Kenjarski as pilot. Rocco Versace as co-pilot, Ann Thompson as recorder. and Rocky Valentine as purser. On this As we of the De-O-Wain-Sta staff gaze solemnly into the crvstal ball. we hope to see a vision which shall tell us the future of our classmates and friends. But silence —the heavenly mists are clearing and what’s this?!! An image of the world. What message are the spirits trying to convey As the second image becomes clear we see a model community composed of many citizens from all walks of life. Their hall decora- tions for Christmas radiated around Santa Claus and his reindeer in the entrance hall. A WTLB record hop was sponsored by them, and they as- sisted at the Junior Prom and Senior Ball. The officers for the Sophomore year were: William Berkman, President; Palma Giardino, Vice-Presi- dent; Patricia Mandronico, Secretary; Maureen Wayman, Treasurer. After sloshing around in the orbit of school life for a year, the Big Dipper finally poured forth its first major event—the Junior Prom. The theme —Bali H’ai name in the musical South Pacific. The decora- was taken from the song of the same tions made the guests feel as if they had been stranded on a tropical isle. Oooo-la-la! The dipper really had risen in brilliance. The four stars who guided the dipper in orbit this year are: David Grow, President; Thomas Spargo, Vice-President: Maureen Wayman, Secretary; Virginia Guggi, Treasurer. They hope to rise to full brilliance next year by becoming seniors. All of them want to know what is is like to be king of the constellations. Front Row, Left to Right: P. MecGurn, M. MeNeil, M. Is there really a Santa Claus? e boys sit down!” Did you hear it’s going to come in gallons? Gee, | wonder if she'll notice me. Two and two are FOUR??? The newest addition to the universe of school life is the Little Dipper—the Sophomore Class. Although it is a relatively young constellation, it—the Class of 1962 ties this year. The Sophomore Class’s usual task is to has had a number of activi- decorate the halls for Christmas, and this year was no exception. Since their main theme was Christ- mas in the future, they constructed the Christmas Futurama in the alcove depicting their ideas of what this kind of Christmas would be like. Their other activities included two dances, a coat check at the Junior Prom, and a Christmas Homeroom Decorating Contest. The stars which guided them in navigating through the school year were: Thomas Kenjarski, President; Charles Gardinier, Vice-President; Ro- berta Tracy, Secretary; Bunny Remick, Treasurer. Although they are still in the formative stage, their constellation will gradually stabilize in orbit to comprise a compact and well organized heavenly body that will rise and shine brightly.
