Vai ADVERTISING HEME “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.” In our small world, RFA is our stage on which we, the students, play our parts under the able direction of our teach- ers and administrative staff. The classrooms, the halls, the stadium, the gym, have been our sets where the spotlight has illuminated our separate joys and sadnesses, our hopes and despairs. This past year we became the proud possessors of new sets which emerged from years of confusion and construction, among them a spacious auditorium and stage. As we leave RFA for the larger stage of which Shake- speare spoke, we hope that each succeeding cast will inherit as fine a theater in which to play their varied roles as we have They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.” Carl S. Paige With sincere gratitude we, the Senior Class of Rome Free Academy, wish to express our apprecia- tion to our capable producer Mr. Carl S. Paige. During the past three years he has- given us untiring co-operation and valuable advice. We are sure of his dependability though he remains quietly in the background. Myron Whitemore With the deepest sense of.appreciation, we the Senior Class of Rome Free Academy, wish to pay tribute to our deserving Vice-principal and co-pro- ducer Mr. Whittemore. We shall always remember him for his unselfish consideration for others and his firm belief in choosing what is right. He is never too busy to offer a practical solution to our problems. Lyndon H. Strough “Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays bis part.” Early this year Mr. Lyndon Strough, Superin- tendent of the Rome Public Schools, opened our new theater for further performances when he spoke at the first assembly in our new auditorium. Mr. Strough inspired the students to work toward higher goals and complimented them on the goals they had already achieved. This was not the first, nor will it, we hope, be the last time that he has given the students a portion of his wisdom gained through his many years of working with them. Attacking the job of improving our schools and facilities the Board of Education of Rome has seen the task completed that has taken many years of planning and hard work. Their dedicated effort to equip us with these fine facilities has been appreciated by these who have already used them and will be appreciated for years to come by many others. The Board of Education Left to Right: Mr. Destito, Mr. Roe, Mr. Bush, Mr. Wolf, President; Mr. Herbst, Mr. Edkins, Mrs. Pendorf. DEDICATION We, the Class of 1959, are proud to dedicate our year- book to MRS. ROBERT HUBBELL. This we do in appre- ciation for her interest in the pupils of RFA and in the school itself. She is always available to the students for advice on prom decorations, posters, and any others matters which might need the attention of a member of the faculty. She greets everyone with a ready smile and a sincere wish to help. Her many hours of patient assistance to the De-O-Wain- Sta Art staff have been a big help and sincerely appreciated. She is more than just an instructor; she is a friend. Cental = Pe, it — . “ae MAE AUSTIN MARIE L. BALDWIN EDWARD C. BALL Latin Health and Hygiene Citizenship Education U. of Vermont, Ph. B. Those pictured on this page are representative of the students who have won scholar- ships and honors. Real scholars add luster to a school because of their superior fulfill- ment of the purpose of education. JOHN WEISS, who won the local French Nation- al Contest, is also one of three who placed in the merit scholarship competition. In addition he received a scholarship to Syracuse University. JUDITH EAKINS, this year's D. A. R. winner, also placed first in the Slingerland Speech Con- test. In her junior year she won the Student Assn. Service Award. The Betty Crocker Award was given to PA- TRICIA BROMBACK. In addition, she has won a New York State Scholarship and she is also a member of the National Senior Honor Society. For showing superior ability in the field of science and math, PAT STELLATO and PAT CHARNEY won the I. R. E. Award of $300 and $150 respectively. A scholarship to Hamilton was also won by Pat Stellato. Junior Achievement Wanna buy some stock?” This question is a sure sign that the teen-ager who asks you is a member of a Junior Achievement Company. Since Junior Achievement com- panies are like any other small enterprises, their members must sell stock, besides mak- ing, packaging and selling their products. In fact, the only difference between J. A. and other small businesses is that the Junior Achievement companies are entirely run by teen-agers. Naturally, some adult direction is needed; this is provided by businessmen from the local larger enterprises who sponsor our city’s Junior Achievement companies. The way these businessmen willingly give their time to help their town’s teen-agers by ac- quainting them with the fundamentals of business is greatly appreciated by all Junior Achievers. It will be remembered in our happy thoughts; the lunches in the cafeteria, the traffic jams in the hallways, the exchange of bathing caps and the straight hair after swimming classes, the football games, the UFA dummy, the Senior Play, the assemblies and, of course, the Senior Ball. It will be remembered in our sad thoughts; the tardy slips and detention, the bon- fire that couldn’t be lighted, the basketball games we almost won, the day lollipops were forbidden, and the day we came back from Christmas vacation. Even though the members of the Class of ’59 will be acting in different roles in colleges, in businesses or in the branches of the armed forces, each will recall his unforgettable part in the play presented at RFA during the three years of his high school life. IOKS THE TEMPEST Be cheerful sir: Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. Class History The Juniors, now in their second year on the stage, have settled down as seasoned actors, proud of the parts they have played. When they were still in the walk-on stage, they elected Stan Kenjarski, Rocco Versace, Ann Thompson, and Rocco Valen- tine to direct them and proceeded to do their best to This they did as sponsors of numerous record hops, which they con- sidered most outstanding, and as sponsors of the Christmas Decorations that were actually admired by the upperclassmen. The culmination of the year was the dance they considered the best ever held at R.F.A., the Sophomore Hop. execute their roles successfully. With the sound of applause at these perform- ances still ringing in their ears, they prepared for their encore and returned to begin their junior year in the true theatrical spiric. After an election that established Stan Kenjarski, Rocco Versace, Esther Burgdorf, and Gail Bielby as leaders, they continued their activities doing well in sports and clubs, plan- ning more record hops, and giving their all to the Junior Prom, a sparkling success called “Winter Coronation”. They also prepared to choose their class rings. Now, as they watch the seniors bowing out, they, as understudies, are stepping into the starring roles for which they have so diligently prepared. Their stage is set, the lights go down, and they see the curtains opening on what they are sure will be a successful performance. Now let's see here. 80 ieee EI Class Officers: Left to Right: Maureen Wayman, Treasurer; Patricia Mandronaco, Secretery; Palma Giardino, Vice-President; William Berkman, President Class History The Sophomores made their debut in Septem- ber, 1958, and were indeed awed by the setting that surrounded them. Their stage fright was great, but it did not prevent them from taking part in the activities offered. They elected William Berkman, Palma Giardino, Maureen Wayman, and Patricia Mandronico as their leaders and Miss Clarke as their advisor. They took complete charge of stage decor- ations, embellishing R.F.A.’s halls with Christmas spirit, proud of the realistic reindeer that pranced for their big fling of the year, their own sophomore- sponsored dance. Along with attending football and basketball games, studying for the mysterious Regents, and get- ting used to the confident upperclassmen, the Soph- omores managed to conduct themselves properly and consider their first attempts most successful. Gain- ing experience from their bit parts, they look to the future to see greater performances, and are indeed prepared to go on with the show. Front Row, Left to Right: F. De Pasquale, M. Downs, M. The Black Knights, under the direc- tion of Coach George Flood and _ his assistant, Coach Edmund Weed, com- pleted a difficult schedule with a com- mendable record of 4 wins - 3. losses - 1 tie. In the first game favored RFA was overconfident, and only good de- fensive play prevented Watertown from routing Rome by more than a 13-0 score. The following week New Hart- ford, undefeated in its last twelve games, was trounced, 19-6, by an inspired R FA team, which featured a powerful running attack. On Saturday October 3, RFA journeyed to Mount Pleasant of Schenectady for its only out of town game during the season. In a_ hard fought game, Mount Pleasant was a 6-0 victor, scoring the winning touch- down in the last two minutes. The fol- lowing week, Rome outplayed Auburn and won the game, 12-6, after holding Auburn on the two-yard line. Rome won by an identical 12-6 score on October 16, beating Proctor with a pair of second half touchdowns. In the sixth game of the season, RAF trailed Whitesboro by six points throughout the first period and then scored second and fourth quar- ter touchdowns to win their third straight game by a 12-6 score. October 30, 1958 will go down as a dark day in an otherwise bright season. The tra- ditional rival, UFA, overpowered RFA by a 27-13 score. Rome's only good moments were in the fourth quarter, when an aerial attack clicked and RFA scored two quick touchdowns. In the fi- male RFA’s loyal fans saw an exciting football game. With only a minute -and half remaining, RFA crossed the Christ- ian Brothers Academy's goal line for a touchdown and a 19-19 tie. OFFICERS READY FOR THIS YEAR’S BATTLE Several members of the World Champion Rome Colonels have been picked to play on the Conference League team in this year's All-Star Baseball Game. Manager for the team will be Rome's own triple-threat athlete, Lou Viviani. Aside from leading the Colonels to victory in last year's World Series, Viviani is remembered in football as the only quarterback to throw a pass and catch it in his own team’s end zone for a touchdown for the other team, in last year’s All-Star Football Game. Chosen from the Colonels for this year's contest were Dick “Yogi” Zigrino, team catcher, who set a new record only last week by sliding on his stomach around the bases from third to home (It is hoped that he will be our of the hospital in time for the next game); southpaw-northpaw Jim Fazio, baseball's only ambidextrous pitcher, who is known for being able simultaneously to strike out the batter and throw out the runner trying to steal second base. SAXOPHONE REAL GONE IN CONCERT HERE Last night Rome was host to a retrogressive jazz concert sponsored by Mr. John Semo, multi-billionaire head of Semo Chemicals, Inc. The feature act was Jack Ritchie and his Rootin’ Tootin’ Revelers. The performance was marred only slightly when Frank L. Trombley, owner of Trombley’s Mar- ket, walked onto the stage to repossess the saxophone of soloist Joe Procopio, for failing to pay for pizza pies bought in 1964 for the citizen s of Greenwich Village. The show's finale contained a medley of songs written by Mr. Ritchie, among them the ever popular “You Stabbed Her From Behind the Drapes, but It's Curtains For You Now Cha Cha.” HOLMES OUT OF HOCK MONTE LOSES CARLOAD Last night, after years of futile attempts, Ronald (Dia mond Ron) Holmes broke the bank at Monte Carlo. His earnings topped even those gained in a similar feat in Las Vegas five years ago. When pressed for the secret of his success, Mr. Holmes said, “I refuse to answer on the grounds that such answer might tend to incriminate me.’ ART SHOW HELD.
