Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1958 volume:

IN-STA To thee, R.F.A. Our allegiance we bring With truth and loyalty! As comrades we come With our minds seeking light And our spirits bold and free. O, dear Alma Mater, We will honor thee more and more; So teach us to be true to thee, Alma Mater, R.F.A. TATA TG TABLE OF CONTENTS oS Se ee aa. 14 APPRECIATIONS.. . mac SOPHOMORES...65 ms... 57 SPORTS ...97 HUMOR...113 ADVERTISING ...121 We, the class of 1958, have chosen music as our theme, for it symbol- izes the work and play of our years at R.F.A. We have learned to work together in harmony just as an orchestra learns to create harmony. Music has inspired our patriotism, our school spirit, and our loyalty. When we first entered R.F.A., we were like overtures, tiny introductions to the great, three-year symphony to come. Although we had a few discords, our harmony was never broken. We continued to work together on the same pitch Now the symphony is coming to an end. The conductor will soon lower his baton for the last time, and all will be over; but the days filled with happy memories will never be forgotten. Their songs will be cherished in our hearts. We, the editorial staff of the De-O-Wain-Sta, would like to introduce to you our ““Mad Musician,” who will accompany you through our record. PRODUCTION MANAGER The name of Superintendent of Schools is a title that is regarded with awe and honor, but behind the authority of the office we find a personality that breeds warmth, kindness, and the qualities that gain him the respect of those associated with him It is our regret that we must go, but we are sure that those who follow us, will enjoy the benefit of Mr. Strough’s administration. Lyndon H. Strough BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Board of Education contributes greatly to our educational well- being. Through its constant efforts, students may now enjoy the beautiful new buildings, which were so desperately needed. A forward-looking group of men and women, the Board not only takes care of the immediate needs in the school system but also, by long range planning, insures a broad educational future. We sincerely thank the Board for the interest they have shown in us in setting up such a fine educational program for our community. Left to Right: Mr. Destito, Mr Bush, Mr. Roe, Mrs. Pendorf President; Mr. Wolf, Mr BOARD OF EDUCATION Herbst, Mr. Edkins. CONDUCTOR —, 3 Hh Il To Mr. Paige: We, the class of 1958, wish to offer our appreciation for the many ways in which you have helped, and the friendly en- couragement you have given us. We have found this year at R.F.A. to be a pleasant one, and we are honored to be the first graduating class from the new buildings. In spite of, and perhaps because of, studying in the midst of construction, we shall always look back upon our last year at R.F.A. as a very exciting and profitable one. We feel that this is due, Mr. Paige, to your efforts. May R.F.A., under your guidance, be continuously successful in mold- ing the character of the young citizens of America. ACCOM | PANIST Mr. Whittemore, a respected, devoted man of whom we can be proud, has served R.F.A. well as assistant principal. We, the class of 1958, regard you as a friend as well as an advisor. Although there were hard times because of the con- struction and changes in the school schedule, Mr. Whittemore never failed us. He was always a “friend indeed.” = SOLOIST We, the Class of 1958, dedicate our De-O-Wain-Sta to Horace Briggs, and, in doing so, wish to show our apprecia- tion for the many things he has done to help each and every one of us. To many, he has been a teacher, but to more of us, he has been a friend. In addition to the dates and famous faces he taught us in history, we have seen him at all the football and basketball games, whatever the weather. Now, as we leave R.F.A., we sincerely hope that succeeding classes will have our “’Prof’’ on their side as he has been on ours. Dr. Levitan has served as medical director for the public and parochial school system since 1928, having en- tered the system as a part-time physician in January, 1917. He was instrumental in founding the State Association of School Physicians which he served as president in 1938. Dr. Levitan: We deeply regret your resignation. Please accept our thanks for your sincere in- terest in the school health pro- gram. Miss Luce, English teacher, has given her resignation after thirty-four years of service. Miss Luce has served Rome Free Academy since the spring of 1924. During this time, she has taught English to many students who will gratefully remember her. All who know Miss Luce regard her as a friend and ad- visor. Miss Luce: Your long service to Rome Free Academy has been deeply appreciated, and we regret your leaving us. Miss Owens, known by all students, past and present, of Rome Free Academy, has been a member of the clerical staff for thirty-two years. Miss Owens has served as clerical worker for Rome Free Academy since 1926, having entered the sys- tem in August of the same year when this school was first opened. Prior to this time, she held a position with the Rome Daily Sentinel. Miss Owens: Your long and out- standing service to Rome Free Academy will never be forgot- ten. We regret your resignation, and we know that t he students and faculty of Rome Free Academy will always remember you. To all of you: We all hope you will enjoy the new life which is beginning for you. 14 vay Lal o = a — ar Lis ‘ “C'est Si Bon” Fraulein’ LANGUAGES Horrors! Dictations, comprehensions, and verbal conjugations! These are the difficulties faced by every language student. Movies, tape recorders, and study of the national culture complete the picture and make the courses more interesting. Pictured here are the four three-year language courses offered at R.F.A. “Learning My Latin” “‘Lady of Spain’’ I'm Going to Sit Right Down and Print Myself “In My Merry Oldsmobile.” a Letter,”’ nNA=ZPrmOAM= OACpyY SHOP AND HOME ECONOMICS Grinding valves and sifting flour are familiar to the shop and home economics students. Whether taken as a major or just for general informa- tion, these subjects may be used in daily living. Among the courses are cooking, sewing, home nursing, auto mechanics, printing, and mechanical drawing. FAmPrQ OTFr=—=xmO “'Rock-a-Bye Baby.”’ “If | Knew You Were Coming I’d a Baked a Cake.” BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY “Dry Bones.” “All Shook-up,”’ SCIENCE AND BUSINESS Formulas and labs are in the weekly schedule of the chemistry student, while the biology student struggles with frogs and grasshoppers. Also in the science course at R.F.A. are physics, hygiene and earth science. When the business major graduates, he is well prepared, as R.F.A. offers a well-rounded business course. Some of the studies included are typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and secretarial training. BOOKKEEPING TYPING “The Lady Can’t Help It.’ AMERICAN HISTORY WORLD HISTORY “America.” “Around the World in 80 Days.” HISTORY AND ENGLISH It is not an unusual sight at R.F.A. to see a student quoting Hamlet or arguing about the outcome of the Civil War. The student meets Hamlet in fourth year English after having already met Macbeth while a junior and become acquainted with Gran’ther Pendleton and Johnny Tremain in his sophomore year. The fourth year English course is a well-rounded one, includ- ing study in grammar, literature, and public speaking History is also an important part of the student’s high school l ife. This course includes three and a half years of such subjects as world history, American government, and American history. JUNIOR ENGLISH SPEECH “Ain’'t That a Shame.” “You've Got to Accentuate the Positive.’ CERAMICS “Mona Lisa.” “We're Painting the Town Red.’ ART AND MUSIC “Pear-shaped tones, please!” is the familiar cry from the music room. Our music and art departments have done a fine job in challenging the creative minds as well as in extracurricular activities. While art students design dance posters, the choir and band rehearse for public appearances. BAND CHOIR “And the Band Played On.” “Mr. Music Man.” “Dancing in the Dark.” “Seven Lonely Days.’’ An unexpected seven-day vacation was enjoyed by all, except the sick ones, of course, when Rome was hard hit by the Asian flu, The schools closed when even the teachers were absent. With the beginning of the new semester in January, R.F.A. went back to full-day sessions. Until traffic was routed, we had to walk sideways down the halls, and dance like a boxer to keep our white shoes out from under various other feet. The seniors really appreciated having the sophomores back. Their return gave back to the seniors their normal position of superiority at the top of the heap. “You'll Never Get Away.” 22 —2ZOT VEK H OMIM K§ Zz 12C The unfinished symphony is now nearly completed. Students have had the joy of being on the scene as each new part of the building opened. With the beginning of school in September, students found just the first half of the second floor of the classroom section partially done. They didn’t seem to mind the absence of heat and light for the first few months. In November the ramp was completed. The second semester found seniors, juniors, and sophomores again attending full-day sessions with many other rooms of the addition opened for classes. Still under construction are the two gyms, the music rooms, the auditorium, the technical shops, the nurse’s quarters, and the headquarters for driver education. LARRY LENNON LIZ BOTTINI President i¥ A S H I S T O R Y Vice-President In an opera production, after the appearance of the conductor, whom we would like to consider as our ‘‘mad musician,’ the orchestra renders an overture, an introduction to our senior section. Our opera production of ‘Three Memorable Years”’ contains three acts. The first act was our sophomore year at R.F.A. The director of this produc- tion was Miss Katharine Clarke, our very faithful and energetic class advisor. Our class officers were the main actors: Larry Lennon, Liz Bottini, Monica Merola and Toni Belmont; president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer respectively. At Christmas time we held a homeroom door decora- tion contest, which was both a great success and the first we held at R.F.A. We shall never forget our dances, “Variety Hop’’ and ‘‘Autumn Leaves,”’ the ballet music of our opera. The second act of our opera was our junior year. The director, Miss Clarke, still continued as our class advisor and Miss Mae Austin assisted her. Our main actors remained the same: Larry, Liz, Monica and Toni. Of course, the highlight of our junior year was the Junior Prom, called ‘Japanese Paradise’’—with our authentic Japanese sign which read “beer and pretzels.” In January we chose our class ring and from then on we grew anxious, thinking of our nearing senior year. RITA SAURINI TON! BELMONT Secretary Treasurer WAMOQ= m1 © We finally reached our senior year and the last act of our production. Our new director was Miss Louise Kingsley. Under her able guidance we had a very suc- cessful and happy senior year. Miss Katharine Clarke aided Miss Kingsley in making our senior year even more successful and complete. With the exception of Rita Saurini, Secretary, the main actors were the same. The theatre bill then read: Larry Lennon, Presi- dent: Liz Bottini, Vice-President; Rita Saurini, Secre- tary; and Toni Belmont, Treasurer. Many conferences with college representatives, the Senior Ball, Moving Up Day, Baccalaureate, the Senior Banquet, Com- mencement and Alumni Night finished up our opera with a grand finale. Although these many school activities and studies consumed most of our thoughts and time, we could not keep from anticipating what life would hold for each one of us after our “Three Memorable Years” at Rome Free Academy. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF ’59 For the past two years, the Class of 1959 has made beautiful music together. The merry introduction was started in our Sophomore year. We sponsored a door decoration contest and we decorated the halls for Christmas, using the theme, ” “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”’ We also sponsored two dances of our own and helped the Juniors and Seniors with theirs. The introduction ended with the election of new composers, Sam Lino- witch, President; John Semo, Vice-President; Mary Ann Izzo, Treasurer; and Phyllis Colangelo, Secretary; and the song began with our Junior Prom, “Jungle Magic.’’ We also picked out our class rings. Now that we are about to become Seniors, we wil try to compose all of our efforts to see that the Seniors are solemnly ushered out of R.F.A., so that we can see what it’s like to be a Senior. Standing: Ann Thompson, Secretary; Rocco Versace, Vice-President. HISTORY OF CLASS OF ’60 Our class entered R.F.A. amidst the blaring of horns and the pounding of drums. We had to make a lot of noise to let the Juniors and Seniors know we were around. This was hard to do because the upperclassmen were attend- ing school in the morning and we were attend- ing in the afternoon. Nevertheless, we managed to adapt our- selves to the hardships of a sophomore’s life, and started to enjoy the activities offered at R.F.A. Early in the fall, we “cut our first disc’’ by electing Stan Kenjarski conductor, Rocco Ver- sace assistant director, Ann Thompson com- poser, and Rocco Valentine as tuba soloist, At Christmas we sponsored a door decora- tion contest, giving a five-pound box of candy as first prize. When we returned to the full-day schedule, we held a sport dance, called the ‘Sophomore Swing,’’ to get acquainted with the Juniors and Seniors. Now that we have passed those fatal exams, we can look forward to our next two years at R.F.A. HOME ROOMS 105 AND 304 Front Row, Left to Right: A. Scaccia, P. Schultz, L. Sciarillo, C. Serra, B. As soon as our school year started, everyone busily began making Preparations for our ‘58 De-O-Wain-Sta. We began by looking over, with Mrs. Watters, past yearbooks—both their good and bad points. After choos- ing our theme, we began to plan for our senior and group pictures. Our photographers were seen everywhere snapping pictures. We faced many problems in deciding on the cover, type of print, and coloring. Somehow we managed to overcome these problems and our year- book finally began to take shape. Although our March deadline crept up on us rather fast, we did manage to get our layout mats on the way. We had a lot of fun composing the yearbook and we hope you will enjoy it. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Left to Right: J. Colella, L. Lennon, J. Palombi, E. Greenberg, B. Dorn, A. Belmont. The National Honor Society, with Miss Louise Kingsley as its advisor, creates enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulates a desire to render service, pro- motes worthy leadership, and encourages the development of character. Its members are chosen once a year from those in the student body who are leaders in both scholarship and service. The Honor Society sponsored the annual Slingerland Prize Speaking Contest and developed a pamphlet giving information concerning gcholar- ships for which New York State students are eligible to compete. The mem- bers also sponsored the most successful Thanksgiving Drive in Rome Free Academy’s history. This year the members elected Antoinette Belmont as their President; Joseph Collela, Vice-President; Betty Dorn, Secretary; Larry Lennon, Treas- urer; and Joe Palombi, Inter-Club Council Representative. The purpose of the German Club is to promote a better understanding of the German people and their country, as well as to increase an interest in the language itself by having the club members strive to speak it at every meeting. In each program, emphasis is placed on certain aspects of German life and culture. The members of this club should be commended for their enthusiastic effort and cooperative manner in placing this organization back in the extra- curricular program at R.F.A. All this could not have been accomplished with- out the capable assistance of Miss H. Blood who contributed many helpful and interesting ideas concerning club matters. Earlier this year the members attended a concert by Jose Greco given at Lincoln Auditorium in Syracuse. Students are given an informal opportunity to speak and hear Spanish at such func- tions as their Christmas party at which they had a pinata and Spanish food. The plans of this newly organized club are somewhat indefinite, although the members are looking forward to having Spanish speakers and a program of Spanish music and games. Butkiewicz, P. Rome Free Academy gridders opened with an overwhelming victory over Watertown. In winning the game 39 to 7, the team effort looked outstanding. In the second game of the season, White Plains never crossed our goal line from scrimmage. The score at half time was 6 to 0 in Rome’s favor— the touchdown being made by Joe Tonon. White Plains scored on the open- ing kickoff of the second half and again in the fourth quarter on an inter- cepted pass making the score 13 to 6. The Mount Pleasant game found Rome losing 13 to 0 at half time, only to come ahead and win 14 to 13. As one of the most thrilling games of the season, the Auburn game proved to be a scoreless tie. Rome had difficulty because of the fine punting of Au- burn. The outstanding feature of this game was Rome’s goal line stand on the one yard line to preserve the scoreless tie. Because of the flu, the Proctor game was postponed and the Whitesboro game cancelled. A two-week layoff hurt us tremendously in the U.F.A. game which we lost 14 to 0 to our powerful traditional rivals. The Syracuse City Champs proved to be too big and too fast for Rome. Early in the fourth quarter, Rome came from behind to put the score at 14 to 13 only to be defeated 28 to 12 at the end of the game. The score was 0 to 0 at half time in the Proctor game. Sophomore backs started at second half and the team went on to win 20 to 0. Our captain, Joe Senus, was the first Rome player in six years to be elected by the Syracuse Herald to the all-area first team. Senus, Bill Pinti and Ron DeConde are to be given credit for having the largest totals of playing time. Dick Zigrino, a junior back, had the most points for the year with a total of 22, followed by Joe Tonon with 18. 99 CROSS COUNTRY First Row, Left to Right: E. Smith, J. Alexander, R. Finlay, S. Johnny Tremain, although fiction, gives an accurate description of life in 1776. Miss Kingsley is an awe-inspiring lady to be treated with complete deference. In regard to school rules, lockers should be kept clean and neat. The swimming pool is on the fourth floor. Older high school girls wear too much makeup. Thursday is “Big Sandwich Day” at Mr. Dorsino’s. There are prepositions in English and propositions in geometry. Everyone should have a high school education. A bid for the Junior Prom is sought after by all and found only by the very fortunate. THINGS WE LEARNED IN OUR JUNIOR YEAR AT R.F.A. Nearly all language teachers are small. Some people adjust poorly to high school. Next year we'll write the best yearbook ever. Although the degree of neatness is not specified in the rules, a locker is neat as long as its door can be closed. Macbeth, although fiction, gives an accurate description of a man who will do anything to fulfill his desires. Life is full of extremes; one must freeze at football games and roast at basketball games. Everyone goes to the Junior Prom. THINGS WE LEARNED IN OUR SENIOR YEAR AT R.F.A. Crime does not pay. We'll be lucky if we go only two weeks past our deadline. Miss Kingsley is one of the gang. Formal education should end with grammar school. There is a distinct difference between ‘amiga’ and ‘‘amoeba.”’ In place of a broom, a shovel is an essential tool in cleaning a locker. Peyton Place, although fiction, is this year’s best seller. The Junior Prom is good for killing a Friday night. HAVE CRYSTAL BALL, WILL PROPHESY Paul Allgaier has just received his sixth degree at the Sorbonne in Advanced French Literature. It takes cable to carry power to the consumer And as long as America’s homes and industries use electri- cal power, Rome Cable Corporation will have a vital role to fulfill. You see, there’s a lot more involved in making cable than simply putting some insulation on a piece of wire. A wealth of scientific research has preceded virtually every significant cable development, and then it usually takes all the knowledge obtained through years of practi- cal experience to put these new developments into use.
