= ]) MZ) Ea s ’ ute UD) sD ©) ! | oY i ait lk | THEME It was nearly 2,000 years ago that the Roman Empire was at its zenith. —The Romans had a great civilization based on just law and sound education. These basic forms of their civilization have come down through the centuries to be at the roots of our civilization also. So it is then that the theme of the 1955 De-O-Wain-Sta be that of The Roman Empire, for with the same basic forms of civilization which the Romans used to build a vast empire of power, so do we lay the cornerstone for our empire of knowledge here at Rome Free Academy. [2] ms bos = = = a be) 7 te = = ROME FREE ACADEMY ll the class of MCMLV presents To thee, R.F.A. Our allegiance we bring With truth and loyalty. As comrades we come With our minds seeking light And our spirits bold and free. O, dear Alma Mater, We will honor thee more and more; So teach us to be true to thee, Alma Mater, R.F.A. Triumvirate MR. STROUGH, Superintendent As superintendent of schools, Mr. Strough must carry the weight of many important decisions. His task is not lightened by the tremendous increase in Rome’s school population. We feel sure that Mr. Strough, congenial and capable, will face future problems as he has met those of the past, and pro- vide the answer to them. MR. PAIGE, Principal When bigger schools are built, Mr. Paige will deserve the supervision of them. With the school crowded as it has never been before, many new and unexpected problems arose. It is a credit to Mr. Paige’s administration that Rome Free Academy took these problems in its stride. MR. WHITTEMORE, Assistant Principal For his second year doubling as a teacher and administrator, Mr. Whittemore has been en- countered by many of us in both capacities. He too has been instrumental in maintaining a_ well regulated high school in the face of tremendous difficulties. Printing NOBLEST ROMAN “Amicitia cum severitate auxilio mixta” When translated, this Latin phrase means, Friendliness and sternness blended to assist. To those who know Mr. Whittemore, this phrase may seem to fall short of defining his personality, but we feel that this slogan typifies him. Mr. Whittemore has served in various capacities as a faculty member of R.F.A. for many years. During the last two years, he has held the dual position of teacher and assistant principal. No matter what the task, he has served the school well. For the valuable instruction and guidance which he has given us, for the indelible impressions which we will take with us into life, we dedicate our yearbook, the 1955 De-O-Wain-Sta, to Mr. Myron J. Whittemore. - © PATRICIANS LOR | mk a) ZA ‘ a itt re | as a TAU LAL IN MEMORIAM ANN MARIE PINTI November 13, 1954 October 16, 1937 We, the class of 1955, dedicate this page of our De-O-Wain-Sta in loving memory of Ann Marie Pinti. She was one of our outstanding classmates and a friend to all of us. Her fun-loving spirit, her kindness, and her smiling face, will light our memories in the years ahead. The suddenness of her going has left an empty place in our graduation ranks— and in our hearts. But we like to think she has gone on to a higher school and a greater graduation. Ann Marie is missed by all of us, and her memory will never be forgotten. CLASS OFFICERS Left to Right: Johanna Ruby, Treasurer; Jean Duffy, Secretary; Stanley Gorski, Vice-President ; James Atkinson, President. HISTORY CLASS OF 1955 The class of 1955, under the guidance of Miss Katherine Clarke, began its sophomore year with the election of class officers. We elected Gerald Malorzo, President; James Atkinson, Vice-Presi Martha Boriack, Treasurer. In our first year we decorated dent; Johanna Ruby, Secretary; and the gym for the first of our two sophomore dances. As the Christmas season neared, decorating the halls was carried out by hammer-laden students with appropriate ideas. Toward the end of our sophomore year we held elections for junior officers. Donald Jones was chosen as our president, with James Atkinson as vice-president. Elaine Lauri and Jean Duffy were selected secretary and treasurer, respectively. We held our Junior Prom November 20, 1953. “Starry Night” was our successful theme. Soon after we chose our class ring. Our final year at R.F.A. began with the prep- aration of material for the 1955 De-O-Wain-Sta, and the play cast began rehearsing for “Dear Ruth” under the direction of Mrs. Bates. With Moving-Up Day, the Senior Ball, Class Night, and finally Graduation Day behind us, we drew to a close our high school days. PLEDLIAND JUNIOR OFFICERS Front Row, left to right: Nazarene Fiore (Vice-President), Suzanne Regetz (Secretary), Vincent De Carolis President), Marie Viviani (Treasurer HISTORY The class of 1956 began its three years at Rome Free Academy by electing Vincent DeCarolis as our president to serve with Vice-President Charles Di Beradino, Secretary Angela George, and Treasurer Marie Colangelo. Our sophomore year was made memorable by our “Winter Wonderland” dance, our festive Christmas dec- orations, and our spring “Maypole” dance. In our junior year Vincent DeCarolis again served as preside nt. Nazarene Fiore took office as vice-president, Marie Viviani became class secretary, and Suzanne Regetz handled our finances. Our first accomplishment as the new junior class of R.F.A. was an autumn dance; this was followed by the Junior Prom, “Winter Fantasy.” The selection of our class ring and the Moving-Up-Day exercises brought an outstanding school year to a close. If next year is as successful as our past two years have been, we know that we shall look back on our high school days with fond memories for many years to come. This division broadcast a thought-provoking quotation for each day and announced at varsity basketball games. The Bulletin Division displayed a “newspaper on a board” in the lighted bulletin board. Reporters produced weekly columns ranging from advice to teen-agers to thoughtful editorials. The editor kept the “Bulletin” timely with backgrounds in modern design. The Press Division, responsible for R.F.A, news in he Rome Daily Sentinel and Utica Press, passed news daily from student reporters to the editor, the typists, the messengers, the news offices, and the public. Reporters also conducted, tabulated, and wrote up “Scholastic Magazine” polls. During the spring term the com- missioner conducted a newspaper journalism course to train cub reporters for the following year. This year the B.S.I. sponsored a “filing cabinet” dance—to purchase a new cabinet. After much deliberation it was decided not to decorate with filing cabinets. Five issues of the “B.S.I. Rival Albert, the Judge and his wife, and Martha are caught expressionless. On a Friday night in November, the class of 1955 presented the comedy ‘Dear Ruth.” The play was directed by Mrs. Curtis Bates. The play’s difficulties take place in the home of Judge Harry Wilkins (Peter Goldstone), his wife (Janet Scritch- field), their two daughters, Miriam (Elizabeth May) and Ruth (Martha Boriack) and Dora the maid (Donna Schug). All the trouble begins with Miriam writing to servicemen to boost their morale—but she signs Ruth’s name to the letters. Lt. William Seawright (Steve Olt- man), who has received one of Miriam’s letters, comes home after 25 missions in hopes of marrying Ruth. Ruth, who works in the local bank, is engaged to Albert Kummer (Albert Herter), who objects to the lieutenant. Set. Chuck Vincent (Arthur Parks) and Martha Seawright (Anne Thomas) help to create more confusion with their romance; this one ends happily. Ruth’s final decision favors Lt. Seawright. FOOTBALL Football coach John Grant turned out one of the best football teams in his career. The men of the gridiron turned out a six and two record and scored points second only to one other R.F.A. eleven. The season’s opener was a 52 to 0 romp over Ilion. It featured the running feats of fullback Joe Nole and scatback Norm Thomas. Nole scored 4 TD’s while Thomas crossed the goal line three times. Excellent defensive play held Ilion scoreless. Nevertheless, Rome displayed sportsmanship right up to the end, even when Bottini caught an out of bounds _ pass on the two yard line near the end of the game. The gridders then journeyed to Auburn and played in the driving rain which was the fore- runner of Hurricane Hazel. A strong Auburn eleven took advantage of the home site and squeezed out a 14-0 decision. Rome students showed their support of the team by making the long trip to the Auburn game, played on a field of mud. The fourth game put Rome back on the victory trail. A defeat of Proctor was followed by an- other win, this time over an always dangerous Whitesboro squad. The twin win did a lot to pep up the team and student body for the traditional U.F.A, game On a cold Saturday afternoon, the Rome eleven displayed their talents before a home crowd against rival Utica Free Academy. When the gun sounded, the tally read 13 to 0 in favor of the home town boys. This game was a forecast of big things yet to come and in the next game Rome trounced Oneida 53 to 0. Next in line was the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with White Plains. White Plains seemed to hold an edge with a terrific weight advantage, while the Romans had the better record. The veterans from the squad of '54 in- cluded Dick Flint, Dave Harris, Angelo D’Am- brosi, Dick Tyksinski, and Pete Fitsik. Along with them were a group of freshmen who were beginning their first year in high school hockey. Boys who Tops on offense... remained from the “B’’ squad were John Parks, Dick Bitely, and Judd Pendorf. The team scheduled games in the Hamilton tournament and the rough Lake Placid tourney. Other games were played against Clinton Central and Onondaga Valley of Syracuse. The winter’s cold provided lots of ice for practice, and the team felt pleased with its game and its record. DICK ALESSI is still Rome’s number one bachelor. JERRY PASSER is the new forest ranger of Potter’s woods. KAY BAUMLER has just bought a station wagon so “all the gang” can ride. ART PARKS is still playing Romeo in the Broadway hit. The grandchildren of the class of ’55 are look- ing forward to having their children attend school in the new addition to R.F.A. This last addition will be completed in 1979. The football team of 55 has just bought the Open Kitchen. All football players are royally entertained (free) after each football game. VINNIE COCCIA, the high scorer at Po- dunk Junction Tech, has been voted the basketball player of the year. MRS. GOTT has finally obtained a new lock for the B.S.I. Bulletin Board. The 1955 yearbook has just been completed. All connected with it are recuperating from nervous breakdowns. %, e + tE, YAUUR woe cy 4 2s hb et) Pos is 3 es Eee ee re ™ , SS se LEST WE FORGET CAESAR and CLEOPATRA Marlene Staple Nancy Shaffer Janet Scritchfield Barbara Paige Kay Baumler Kay McDonald Diane Thomas Carol Butler Sophie Ball Sharon De Christo Jean Duffy Joan Williams Judy Lamay Sandra June Oran Kohlepp Bruce Englebert Stu Barret Don Healy Dick Flint Jim Atkinson Nick Bottini Vaughan Christman Ray Plantz Jack Martin Peter Fitsik Dale Sherwood Carl Parker Jerry Malarzo Jane Sykes Pat King Barbara Cornish Virginia Jones Anne Thomas Sheila Baldigo Sonia Yakobiszyn Kay LaPlante Joye White Charlotte Mandronica Kay Scothon Jean Akins Janet Grzesiak Marie Zullo Hildred Butters Don Gafner Ed Patton Dick Bronson Gerry Duffy Don Sherwood Charlie Mackie Pepper Martin Dick Tykinski Cheech Faroni Terry Prossner Val De Visser Carl Pickett Ken Hiscock Newsweek :NOR HOPE, ‘ ¥OU MUST } TO YOU, I'LL ME INSIDE ND Aire By BOO NIEMAN atte ee eee John Ruane Peggy Thurber Jim Atkinson Joyce Kiskadden W ittiest Done Most for R.F.A. Salutations to the 1955 graduating class from the physicians of the Rome area. They know the value of your education. They urge you to never stop learning. But their salutations are surpassed by their service. They would like you to know that: . With their colleagues in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties they established America's first multiple-county medical program in order to serve you and yours better and more fully. . Throughout three great counties they guarantee the delivering of a doctor's care when needed, regardless of time, place or the ability of the patient to pay. . They have set up an emergency system so that, when you cannot reach your own doctor or another of your choice, and in an emergency, a call to Rome and Murphy Memorial Hospital will bring medical care. } : } | : . They have established a Mediation Committee to hear any cases of complaint and to assist you in any medical matters. . They have taken a stand on matters that affect your health and the health of those in this area. . At hospital staff meetings they spend hours in pooling their knowledge for the benefit of the patients in sick beds. In their county medical society they develop top flight educational programs to increase their own ability to serve. . They have dedicated themselves to serving the people of your community. Service is important to your physicians because it is their creed. Yes, your physician salutes y ou, graduates, but be confident in the knowledge that he is ready to serve you and those you love. For you ... salutations and service, too! iS SSS SE 2a eee 2 pee Ad ete Are essential for happy motoring and safety for ourselves and our fellowman.
