Front Row, left to right: Leila Haywood (Secretary), Dick Lenio (President), Fred Dion (Vice-President), Anne Barnard (Treasurer). Class Officers and History The class of 1951 began its sophomore year at R.F.A. with the election of Richard Dorsino, Richard Lenio, Vice-President; Kay and Sheila O’Shea, President; Lavarnway, Secretary; Treasurer. The traditional Christmas decorating of the halls was done with a note of originality. A Christmas tree was placed over the front entrance in the arch, and the Nativity scene was placed in the trophy case. In our sophomore year we put on two dances, both extremely successful. These were the “Sopho- more First” and the “Stardust” dances. Our junior class officers were as follows: Robert Jones, President; Joseph Borden, Vice- President; Kay Lavarnway, Secretary; and Patricia Rhein, Treasurer. The highlight of our second year at R.F.A. was the Junior Prom, held in the R.F.A. gym. With “A Garden in the Rain” as the theme, many couples danced to the music of Wes Teelin’s band. Our junior year ended with the choosing of our class rings. Our senior year was begun with the task of assembling material for the 1954 De-O-Wain-Sta, and the Senior Play cast began practicing for the comedy “Not for Sale,” under the direction of Mrs. Bates. Rounding out our high school activities, there came in rapid succession Moving-Up Day, the Senior Ball, and that long awaited event, Gradua- tion Day. In June of 1954 we graduated from Rome Free Academy, taking with us many cherished and never to be forgotten memories.

Page 10 In Memoriam JOE BORDEN It was with the deepest sorrow that the student body heard of the death of one of Rome Free Academy’s most popular students, Joseph Borden. Joe’s student life was equally expressed in all its phases; it included participation in student government, clubs, and many sports. Joe’s presence will be missed by all. It is with the most profound sincerity and humility that we offer this portion of our De-O-Wain-Sta in memory of Joe. Our fond remembrances of this loyal friend will remain with us through the coming years.
