Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1954 volume:

We live in unsettled time, times in which the free peoples of the world live in fear of military and idealistic aggression. A primary function of our schools is to prepare us to resist that aggression. Many of us will do this by arms; it is to be hoped that we all do this by force of deed and word. We have chosen a military theme for our De-O-Wain-Sta. We dedicate this book in part to those men and women who have left and will leave R.F.A. to enter the armed forces of the United States. We dedicate it also to those who serve our country on a civilian basis. In short, our dedication this year is devoted to those thousands of R. F. A. graduates throughout the years who serve those ideals which maintain our nations greatness. he Te Eh OD Be | CLASS OF 1954 PRESENTS as: —“? Alma Mater To thee, R.F.A. Our allegiance we bring With truth and loyalty. As comrades we come With our minds seeking light And our spirits bold and free. O, dear Alma Mater, We will honor thee more and more; So teach us to be true to thee, Alma Mater, R.F.A. Words and Music by John O. Lundblad t-O-WAIN-3 Th ROME FREE ACADEMY ROME, NEW YORK Chiefs of Staff MR. STROUGH Superintendent of Schools To the class of 1953, greetings! Your diploma represents an achievement of which you should be proud. Yet you should temper your pride with humility, for the real test is in your future — how will you use your education? MR. PAIGE Principal It is our hope that the knowledge which you have acquired will give you confidence in the future and that the ideals that you have formed will help you to be satisfied with only the best. May the experiences provided here serve to en- courage you to always seek a better way to fulfill your ambitions. MR. WHITTEMORE Assistant Principal Be it on land, on sea, or in the air, may you be the happier, the more successful, the better men and women because of your boot training at R.F.A. yy j 7 Si Miss Geyh, Mr. Wessing Guidance Miss Clark, Mrs. White Homemaking Mr. Kitchell, Mrs. Hubbell Art ) Officers of The Line Mr. Wise, Mrs. Feickert Music Miss Barnard, Miss Stauring Foreign Language Miss Riley ; Science Miss Wolzmuth, Dr. Levitan Health Mrs. Moe, Mr. Moe Business Mr. Auchmoody Printing Miss Kingsley English and Co-ordinator of Extra-curricular Activities Mr. Hayes, Mr. Mammone Citizenship Miss Clarke Foreign Language Miss Austin, Miss Luce English Officers Miss Eysaman, Miss Mittenmaier Citizenship Mr. Harvey, Mr. Briggs Citi hi Mr. Ball, Mrs. Wolf oe Citizenship Mr. Freeland, Mr. Lowerre English Mr. Palombi, Miss Ullrich Science and Mathematics Mr. Manwaring Auto Mechanics of The Line Mrs. Pelkey Mrs. Graves Librarian Homemaking Miss Owens, Mrs. Davison Clerks Miss Blood German and Mathematics : Mrs. Watters, Mrs. Bates English Officers of The Mrs. Woods, Miss Temple Mrs. Copia, Mrs. Herlehy Business Mr. Knudsen, Mr. Dorsin: Mathematics Mr. Wightman Physical Education Mr. Smith, Mr. Beers Custodians Mr. Richardson Driving Mr. Hagerty Speech SENIORS Page 10 In Memoriam JOE BORDEN It was with the deepest sorrow that the student body heard of the death of one of Rome Free Academy’s most popular students, Joseph Borden. Joe’s student life was equally expressed in all its phases; it included participation in student government, clubs, and many sports. Joe’s presence will be missed by all. It is with the most profound sincerity and humility that we offer this portion of our De-O-Wain-Sta in memory of Joe. Our fond remembrances of this loyal friend will remain with us through the coming years. Front Row, left to right: Leila Haywood (Secretary), Dick Lenio (President), Fred Dion (Vice-President), Anne Barnard (Treasurer). Class Officers and History The class of 1951 began its sophomore year at R.F.A. with the election of Richard Dorsino, Richard Lenio, Vice-President; Kay and Sheila O’Shea, President; Lavarnway, Secretary; Treasurer. The traditional Christmas decorating of the halls was done with a note of originality. A Christmas tree was placed over the front entrance in the arch, and the Nativity scene was placed in the trophy case. In our sophomore year we put on two dances, both extremely successful. These were the “Sopho- more First” and the “Stardust” dances. Our junior class officers were as follows: Robert Jones, President; Joseph Borden, Vice- President; Kay Lavarnway, Secretary; and Patricia Rhein, Treasurer. The highlight of our second year at R.F.A. was the Junior Prom, held in the R.F.A. gym. With “A Garden in the Rain” as the theme, many couples danced to the music of Wes Teelin’s band. Our junior year ended with the choosing of our class rings. Our senior year was begun with the task of assembling material for the 1954 De-O-Wain-Sta, and the Senior Play cast began practicing for the comedy “Not for Sale,” under the direction of Mrs. Bates. Rounding out our high school activities, there came in rapid succession Moving-Up Day, the Senior Ball, and that long awaited event, Gradua- tion Day. In June of 1954 we graduated from Rome Free Academy, taking with us many cherished and never to be forgotten memories. Sophomore students registered and voted and the results were Gerald Malorzo, president; James Atkinson, vice-president; Johanna Ruby, secretary; and Martha Robinson, treasurer. Early in our first year we decorated the gym for our first sophomore dance which turned out to be a big success. We also decorated the halls of R. F. A. for Christmas. Volunteers stayed after school to help put up the different decorations and the Christmas spirit was made apparent throughout the school. In the latter part of the sophomore year we held our elections for junior officers. Donald Jones was chosen as president, James Atkinson was re- elected as vice-president, and Elaine Lauri and Jean Duffy were elected as secretary and treasurer. The last event of our sophomore year was Moving-Up- Day, in which every sophomore took part. We started our junior year with plans for the Junior Prom which was held November 20, 1953. The theme of the dance was “Starry Night”, and it turned out to be a very successful achievement for our junior year. We only hope that our remaining year at R. F. A. will be as much fun as our past years have been. PLATOON 2 Front Row, left to right: C. Carrieri, L. DeMario, B. Cline, V. Conner, D. Chyrwaty, N. Bottini (Chairman), M. Sophomore Officers And History The former freshmen of Laurel Junior High and Rome Junior High joined in September to make up the class of 1956. While going blindly from class to class, we met many new friends. Our first project that we undertook was the election of class officers. Early in December we held the annual Sopho- more dance which was a great success. Soon after this we decorated the three floors, the auditorium, and the front door for Christmas. We were very glad to be the first class to use the new front entrance for decorating. We hope that we can continue the remainder of our high school years with as much success and enthusiasm as we have this year. PLATOON 6 Front Row, left to right: A. Casler, R. Bormann (RC Repr.), S. ACTIVI TIES ws The editorial staff has worked hard to produce a yearbook worthy of the class of 1954. After organizing for work, our first problem was to get the senior portraits taken. With co-operation from students and the studio, this was finally completed. We next had to get all the group pictures taken. Members of homerooms and clubs had to be called out of classes to the auditorium to pose for the camera. The various staffs then went to work on their sections of the book, always keeping it in mind that we had deadlines to meet. All staff members kept busy collecting snapshots to be included with the more formal pictures. After the material was all organized and sent to our publishers, we should have been able to relax. We worried. Had everything turned out okay? We think it did and hope that you feel the same. Bureau Its three divisions — the Press, Broadcast, and BSI Bulletin, provide valuable experience for over 100 pupils and valuable service to the school. Members of the Press Division handle all RFA news stories appearing in the Rome Daily Sentinel. Articles are edited and then typed by the BSI’s typing staff before being delivered to the Sentinel by the Press Division’s messenger. These articles do not occur in « school column, but are dispersed among news stories written by the Sentinel staff. This not only provides the school with good public relations, but also provides excellent practical training in commercial journalism for the reporters. Every morning and afternoon announcers bring to each homeroom the daily public address an- nouncements. Each announcer has a silent partner who edits the announcements, operates the P.A. machine, and files announcements after they have been read. The Broadcast Division also makes public service announcements and plans special programs. The announcing at home basketball games is in charge of this division. The BSI Bulletin staff writes and posts school news in the lighted bulletin board in the first floor hall. The BSI Bulletin has grown very popular with the student body. Its pictures, humor, and interesting news write-ups have become a part of our school life. Sicsahedis an” Setatasie, Sots O'Shea, Dorothy Chrywaty, and Dave Wagar prepare a_ flash for the Sentinel. Their skillful exhibitions at the beginning of the games and at halftime added color and spirit to all R.F.A.’s home games. Mable Harding (Midge Clayton), an antique collector, gets her family and friends mixed up in a smugglers’ ring. The chair her husband Bob (Ed Marks) bought to replace the one he sat on and broke contains a painting smuggled from the Louvre. Connie (Ann Wilson), Mable’s sister, trying to evade ex-boy friend Homer Davidson (Dave Wagar), arrives in planty of time to get mixed up in the plot. Homer, following her, proves himself to Connie by discovering the painting. Stella Graham (Peggy Reh), who sold the chair by mistake from the shop of Mrs. Harriet Hipple (Joanne Gillette), tells everyone the chair is not for sale. Bob Harding won’t give it back. Harriet and her smooth talking business partner Barry Strum (Dick Davison) try to get it back. Finally they try force and almost get the chair with the help of Nick (Al Tamburrino), a hoodlum posing as an F.B.I. agent. Button collector Liz Carter (Donna Watson) and perfume collector Amelia Sinker (Lynn Watters) help their friend Mable by using their hobbies to foil the smugglers. Mark (Joe Szarek), the real F.B.I. agent arrives in time to give the reward for the painting to Bob and Mable. We presented programs at Griffiss Air Force Base and the Oneida County Home, also shipped a chest to Europe for school children there. We took pride in an international album which we made to acquaint foreign students with Rome, the copper city. The purpose of the German Club or “Deutsche Verein” is to further the study of Germany and its people. During the year our meetings were held once a month with special ones for parties or l uncheons. We gave German skits, played games, and enjoyed singing German folk songs. With Pat Pomento calling the plays, Jim Hatter scored first with a 22 yard run, and O’Donell soon followed with the winning TD. An undefeated Auburn e leven kept its record unblemished with a 13 to 0 victory over Rome. Led by co-captains Burns and Hatter, with able assistance from Healy, Hill, and Guerrieri, the team showed plenty of spirit as it threatened time and time again. Despite the loss of two regular quarterbacks, Rome took Proctor 6 to 0. Pete Vrooman con- verted from halfback to quarterback for the game and in the last minutes of the fourth period threw a 35 yard scoring pass to Hatter. Led on defense by Bob Hill and Dick Lenio, the Rome line con- tained the Proctor running game while an active Rome backfield made itself the despair of the Proctor passing attack. In its sixth game the Romans overran a favored Whitesboro team by a score of 39 to 15. Led by quarterback Moe Burlison, the team realized its potential and showed itself to be a real powerhouse. Hatter, a standout on both offense and defense, ran for three touchdowns, the first a dazzling run of 46 yards on the second play of the game. Also scoring for Rome were Tony Guglielmo, Joe Nole, and Nick Bottini. The traditional Rome - U.F.A. game took place on a field of snow and mud; conditions did not hamper R.F.A. as it piled up a 34 to 0 score. Guerrieri highlighted his final season in R.F.A. football by carrying two blocked punts for touch- downs. Burlison found the range, hitting Nole and Gorski for touchdowns, and Hatter added to his ground gaining record by returning the second half kickoff 90 yards for a score. In the final game of the season Rome was host to Oneida. Rated very much the underdog, Oneida held the R.F.A. eleven to a 12 to 12 tie. % It’s a rough game! But Healy rises to fight again.
