1991 DE-O-WAIN-STA Theme 1951 marks the 26th year of the publication of Rome Free Academy s yearbook, the De-O-Wain-Sta. The name, De-O-Wain-Sta, was derived from the Oneida Indians’ words for “the carrying place,’ which means the place where canoes were carried from one stream to another. Their canoes were carried from the Mohawk River to Wood Creek which passed through the center of Rome in the general location of what is now Dominick Street. The theme which we have chosen for this year is Ma and Pa of R.F.A.., who symbolize the backwoods people who lived during the early history of Rome. mt ’ , 2 alage, . - « = - Pat. - paral! Our first bi halls for Christmas. After class assessment we i ' i oy g job was the decoration of the bought red and green streamers and Christmas trees for the auditorium. In the halls. in addition to the streamers, were stars, bells, and Santa Clauses which hung from the ceiling. The result of our decorations was a proud achievement for a beginning class. Also in our first year at R.F.A. we held a Sopho- more Hop. With just two dollars in the treasury and contidence in our hearts we put on the most suc- cesstul dance of the year. In the latter part of our Sophomore year we elected Junior Officers. Peter Haritatos was elected {48 } President, Salvator Barone became Vice-President, and Marie Boriack and Doris Knudsen were chosen Secretary and Treasurer. The final event of our Sophomore year was Moving-Up-Day in which every Sophomore participated. In our Junior year we started with a dance to make money for the Junior Prom. Our Prom was hela late in November in the R.F.A. gym, which was decorated with stars and angels to accompany our theme, ‘Stars Are the Windows of Heaven. Another first for our class was the starting of a committee to read plays for our Senior year. This is done to permit more time for the Senior Play and it eliminates the work of the selection of a play in our Senior year. We have also selected a committee to choose our class rings. This is an honor for all those on the committee. We have been well represented in Student Council Activities. We were the first class of Sophomores from Rome Free Academy to use the new stadium and are very proud of it. During the Christmas season, for the first time, the Nativity Scene with Joseph, Mary, and the Infant was put in the front arch at the entrance to the school by the class. A commendable job of Christmas decorations adorned all the three floors and the auditorium. A dance was held in the spring at which many Sophomores made their debut 7 rc : to Senior High society. Rome scored in each of the first three quarters although the rain was heavy. Rochester was able to penetrate into R.F.A. territory only once. The first touchdown came when Jack Campbell went 43 yards. Jerry Gallucci kicked the extra point. After Rochester punted from the 8 to the 28, Captain George Grande pulled away to the three and went over his own left tackle for the second touchdown. Bob Alessi went through the center for a 38 yard run and the final touchdown of the game. PROCTOR A determined Proctor eleven invaded Rome and handed us our only defeat on our home field. The game was lost in the final two minutes of play when Proctor recovered a Rome fumble and kicked a 37 yard field goal and won the game 23-21. Pat Domenico, George Grande, and Jack Campbell sparked on offense, while Dick Ferrucci and Rock Mesagana starred on defense. Although beaten for the first time on their new field, the Turin Streeters had by far the better statistics. They outrushed, outgained and had more first downs than the visiting Uticans. WHITESBORO Playing before a crowd of 2,500, the Rome Free Academy gridders defeated a powerful, fast mov- ing Whitesboro team 32-25. Whitesboro, rated as one of the best high school teams in the state, had been undefeated for three straight years. They had been upset a few weeks previously by Cortland but were gunning for the Rome game. The Whites- boro team was a slight favorite as they entered the game because of Dickie Frye, son of the coach, who is rated as the best quarterback in the area. As snow filled the air, George Grande and Jack Campbell swung into action, tearing holes in the Whitesboro line. Running with them was Bob Alessi, fullback, who tore off tremendous gains every time he took the ball. Whitesboro took an early first period lead, 6-0 and held it almost to the end of the first half but Rome scored and added the extra point to make it [70] 7-6. Rome was never behind after this. The most interesting part of the game was the fourth period in which five T. D.'s were scored in five minutes, two Rome and three by Whitesboro. The amazing part was that three T. D.'s were scored in |! min- utes, 2 by Whitesboro and | by Rome. The most spectacular play was John Santoro's return of a kickoff for 86 yards. Whitesboro had a chance to tie Rome when Frye hit his end on the Rome ten. Alessi hit him causing him to fumble and Alessi jacknifed over him to recover for Rome. Four plays later the game ended. The following week Rome started practic- ing for their Thanksgiving game with a very pow- erful White Plains team. This team had not lost since Rome beat them in 1948. WHITE PLAINS Playing before a record crowd of 10,000 people, Rome Free Academy lost to a powerful White Plains team by a 20-14 verdict. The Orange and Black from upstate gave the Westchester County champs their stiffest battle of the year. In this game, White Plains was limited to the fewest points they scored all year. Playing a great game the Turin Streeters ended up with a record of 5-3. R.F.A. was playing under a great handi- cap as they were outweighed by 20 pounds per man on the line. White Plains dominated the first quarter and the early minutes of the second quarter, but they were unable to score at that time. Later, after blocking a Rome kick deep in Rome's territory, Chick Young, a standout for White Plains, scored. The extra point was good and they lead Rome for 7 minutes until Lassek threw a screen pass to Alessi for a T. D., Gallucci kicked the extra point and the score was tied. Another great player for the homesters was Grover Jones, a fleet footed halfback who made many considerable gains. Rome scored once more and White Plains scored twice more to end the scoring for the day. Picked by the Westchester press and radio as well as by the Rome fans was George Grande who was chosen most outstanding player for Rome. Grande, Domenico, Ferucci and Campbell played their last high school game in White Plains. jiome. Li. ad a? | | ae ’ ot AN J. Two members of the RFA sextet were voted by rival coaches to the All Star Team. They were Paul Swancott, whose exceptional play at left wing accounted for many of Rome's scores,,-and Bob Carrier, who played well at his new position, that of defense. Because of its lack of practice, the team didn't seem to catch tire until the second period, but when it did it had a strong scoring punch in the second line of Tom Lawler, Bob Alessi, and Bob Bird. With two more tournaments left, the Clarkson Invitation and the Lake Placia, Rome looked forward to a successful season. P. Swoncott C. Dutcher H., Lavarnway W. Goetz _- 7“ = aan ie, ota ©. Bitely S. The Rome Free Academy track team, which ran on their own quarter mile track for the first time in Rome's history, surprised many of their stronger opponents. Although the team had complete facilities for practicing, the interest in Rome was very low, due to the fact that this was the first season that Rome had a real track set-up. In the sectionals Rome finished 4th out of 8 schools, Participating at Oswego they won their first meet of the season by taking first place in all but two events. With Oneida, Rome was jinxed. They lost both meets by the identical scores of 51-49. With track on the upward trend and only a few members of last year's surprise team graduating, this year's team looks forward to a successful season. [74] “Ny SWIMMING Standing: GC. Plattenbura, | .
