Soon after this, with much campaigning, we elected officers for the first year In December our class decorated and undecorated the halls and auditorium for Christmas. We used crepe paper streamers, Santa Clauses and stars in the halls, and two brightly decorated trees on each side of the stage in the auditorium. In the spring our Sophomore class held its annual dance which was very successful. Row 3— eam AMSTERDAM In the first game of the third season in which the Orange and Black gridders played all their games away from home, a scrappy Amsterdam club held the favored visiting team to a 6 to 6 tie. The home- sters scored first and then kept the invaders in their own territory for the remainder of the first half. It was in the third quarter that the Academy began to move. Taking possession of the pigskin on their own 15 yard line, they moved down field for a touchdown. It was Jack Kain, Jack Campbell and George Grande who alternated on this sustained drive, with Grande scoring the first Rome touchdown of the 1949 season on a brilliant 30 yard jaunt. The placement try for the extra point went wide, and the score ended 6 to 6. AUBURN Our next game was played under the lights at Auburn in their beautiful stadium. The homesters threatened in the first period when they had pos- session of the ball on the Auburn Academy 8 yard line. After being held for two downs they passed. Th is pass was intercepted by George Grande who then romped 12 yards behind excellent blocking for the game's first score. Auburn came right back to score on an intercepted lateral and the score stood 7 to 6 in favor of Auburn at the half. In the third quarter a sustained drive of 55 yards, climaxed by Jack Campbell's 12 yard jaunt, netted the Orange and Black its second touchdown. Neal Gochee kicked the extra point for a 13 to 7 score that held up until the last 41 , minutes. With less than 5 minutes of playing time remain- ing Auburn knotted the score on a cleverly executed pass play. The try for extra point was missed. On the ensuing kickoff, the Maroon and Grey took advantage of a Rome lapse, and recovered the ball. They scored 5 plays later which made the final score 20 to 13. It was in this game that quarterback Dina Edick fractured his hand. He had to remain out of action for the rest of the season, and the team suffered greatly from the loss of a fine player and an excep- tionally adept quarterback. JOHNSON CITY Following the Auburn game, the Turin Streeters invaded the Southern Tier for a contest with a highly touted Johnson City eleven. Rome outplayed their heavier opponents during the entire first half, but couldn't cope with the experience and power packed by the Southern Tier Conference Champs during the second half. J.C. scored on a pass in the third quarter and again on an end sweep to give the homesters a quick 13 to 0 advantage. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Rome threatened, but J.C. took over on downs and immediately marched down the field for their third score. Their last touchdown came on an intercepted pass and the score was 27 to 0 before Rome got their attack functioning. George Grande intercepted a pass and carried to the J.S. 43. Al Scothon then flipped a pass to Grande for nine yards and followed up by tossing one to Arch Odrzykowski on the 18, Jack Kain then took over the quarter- backing duties and threw a beautiful jump pass to Pat Domenico which carried to the J.C. 3. Scothon then came in and threw to Grande in the end zone, after which Neal Gochee kicked the extra point and the game ended with the score 27 to 9 in favor of Johnson City. OSWEGO An alert pass defense and two aerials combined to give the visiting Orange and Black team a victory over the Oswegians. The visitors scored in the last minutes of the first half, when quarterback Al Scothon flipped a pass to right half George Grande in the end zone. Ned Gochee kicked the extra point and R.F.A. led at halftime 7 to 0. There was no more scoring until the fourth quar- ter, when a timely interception by center Dick Ferucci set up the second touchdown. After Grande gained 15 yards around left end, quarterback Jack Kain tossed a short pass over the heads of the onrushing Oswego line to Pat Domenico, who followed a host of blockers into the end zone for the Turin Streeters’ second touchdown of the day. Gochee again kicked the extra point and the game ended, Rome 14, Oswego 0. Football —— WATERTOWN Out to get on the winning side of the ledger, R.F.A. journeyed north to play the Watertown Cyclones at the Fair Grounds. Showing a powerful offense and a resolute defense, the visitors outplayed a scrappy Watertown eleven. It was only 6 plays after the opening kickoff when fullback Jack Kain took a handoff from quarterback Dina Edick and plunged into pay dirt. Neal Gochee kicked the extra point and Turin Streeters led 7 to 0. Five plays after the start of the second quarter Kain again crossed the double strip. This placement attempt was good and the score read Rome 13, Watertown 0. After a Watertown fumble and a Rome recovery on the four yard line, George Grande took a handoff from Kain and scored. The kick was wide and Rome led 20 to 0. Minutes later Grande interrupted a Cyclone pass. Kain and Edick moved the ball to the homesters 7, where Grande scored again. Gochee’s kick was good and the score at half time was 27 to 0. In the second half, the Rome reserves saw plenty of action, but penalties hindered any scoring oppor- tunities they had. Considerable praise should be given to the defen- sive line in this game, Led by Ronald Bertrand and Bernie Demski, our line threw the speedy Water- town backs for large losses time and time again. PROCTOR Unleashing a versatile attack, Rome bested Proctor 13 to 3 on the New Hartford field, The East Uticans were bottled up all afternoon by the brilliant play of our defensive line. Led by Larry Schneible, Paul Bot- tint, Joe Loftus and Frank Melie, it held the Proctor offense to a total gain of 12 yards all afternoon. The Rome offense was stalled all during the first half by the Proctor forward wall, and only threatened once during the closing minutes of the second period. In the third period a goal line interception staved off a possible score. In the fourth period it was a different story. With Pat Domenico hitting the line and George Grande skirting left end, Rome carried to the Proctor 8, where Neal Gochee scored on a neatly executed dou- ble reverse. He also kicked the extra point and we led 7 to 0. Two plays after the next kickoff, Grande intercepted a Proctor aerial and went 23 yards to a touchdown, It was the masterful kicking of Bill Perry which kept Proctor in its own territory during the entire game. His kicks averaged a distance of 36 yards, which is very good kicking. U. A, On November 5, in a sea of mud, an underdog U.F.A. eleven held the heavily-favored Rome Grid- ders to a scoreless deadlock. The play of the two teams was limited to the regions between the two 20 yard markers, with neither team threatening to score during the entire game. This was the first game of the season in which our star right halfback, George Grande. failed to cross the double-marker for a score at least once. The weather conditions were poor, described by players, coaches and spectators as the worst they had ever seen. — ee ts SCORES The basketball team. coached by Charlie Edkins. got off to a poor start this season losing to Auburn, ONG cies: + oa Auburn .. — | St. Francis and U.F.A. The record went back to 1942 when Rome was de- feated in its last game of that season by Clinton. Again it was Clinton who made Rome taste defeat with a 3 to 2 victory in the first game of the 1950 season. Victories were registered over Onondaga Valley and Clinton High School twice, as well as a single victory over Ilion. The second victory over Clinton was a 6 to O score that satisfied the team somewhat for its first defeat. Lake Placid also defeated Rome in the finals of the Hamilton College tournament 4 tol. Of that fact. both the management and the workers of Revere are naturally proud. But Rome is by no means a one-industry city. In addition to copper and brass rolling mill products, Rome also manufactures wire products, cable, floor cleaning equipment, paint, rayon, cotton knit wear, fishing tackle, and harnesses, as well as the famous Revere Copper Clad Stainless Steel Kitchen Utensils and Copper Kettles. And it does a thriving business in vegetable- and-fruit-packing. There's all-around freedom of enterprise for you! And it is freedom of enter- prise that makes not only Rome, but the U.S.A., a place of opportunity and incentive. We at Revere are proud to be a part of this great activity. eS ———-= el FRFFE REVERE COPPER AND BRASS INCORPORATED Executive Offices: 230 PARK AVENUE, NEW YORK 17, N. Y.
