Vaccaro Filippini Risucci Adolphi Varano AMSTERDAM The R. F. A. football squad opened its ’48 grid campaign with a decisive 25-6 win over Am- sterdam. The first score of the game was registered by Amsterdam on an intercepted pass. On the resulting kickoff Joe Dematteo unreeled a spectacular 97 yard touchdown gallop to recover the Rome gridders. Following this touchdown Rome went on to score 3 more touchdowns and an ex- tra point. WATERTOWN Spirited by the power displayed in the first game the Rome Gridders confidently entered this game to play a potentially powerful team. However, Rome’s overwhelming power proved to be too much for the Watertown squad. Jack Kain, our star fullback, led the attack by scoring 4 of the Academy’s touchdowns while Joe Dematteo scored the other and Bill Bird accounted for the extra — AUBURN This was the game, the winner of which was predicted to be the conference champions. How- ever, the Rome offense squad was not up to par and was unable to pierce the strong Auburn de- fense. Auburn scored on a completed pass into the Rome end zone. It was very obvious that Rome had lost to an underrated football team. 49 JOHNSON CITY As a result of losing the Auburn game, the Rome team was considered the underdog in this game. Although we lost, we were far from the underdog team. This exciting high school game brought together two very evenly matched teams. Johnson City scored first on a 70-yard touch- down drive. Rome launched a counter-attack by scoring on a beautiful 90-yard drive climaxe d by Joe Dematteo’s 15-yard run to pay dirt. The deciding factor of the game came when a Johnson City lineman picked up a loose blocked kick and ran untouched into the end zone. After this un- canny touchdown, the academy eleven was unable to cross the goal line of the spirited Johnson City team. PROCTOR Although outdistancing Proctor on the ground and in the air, Rome lost a touch decision to a strong Proctor eleven. The first three quarters were comparatively uneventful with neither team scoring. The fourth quarter was highlighted when R. F. A. climaxed a sustained drive with a touchdown by Joe Dematteo. Rome was unable to score the extra point and the game ended with Proctor winning 7-6. Costly fumbles and Proctor’s determination to hold on to their lead kept the R. F. A. gridders from saving the situation. U. F. A. Determined to snap their losing streak, the Rome squad journeyed to Murnane Field in Utica to play a powerful U. F. A. eleven. After losing the three previous games, R. F. A. went on the win against U. F. A. to the tune of 6-0. This was Rome’s 30th win in the long standing rivalry which has matched the two teams 54 times. The game’s lone touchdown came as a result of a long aerial by quarterback Nat Spadafora to left end Sam Trificano. The extra point after the touchdown fell short and the first quarter ended with the score standing at 6-0 in favor of the ‘‘Orange and Black’’ of Rome. In the remaining three quarters of the game, neither of the two teams hit pay dirt and the contest ended with Rome on the better half of a 6-0 win over their tra- ditional rivals, U. F. A. The entire team played an outstanding game along with Pat Domenico who turned in a beautiful game as fullback. OSWEGO The R. F. A. football team played one of its best games when it beat Oswego High 28-7. The team displayed its normal power this muddy afternoon. Kain and Grande each ran for a touch- down while Joe Dematteo, our speedy halfback, hit pay dirt twice. A safety and two extra points accounted for the four other points. We must not forget the excellent job done by the seven line- men this day of triumph. WHITE PLAINS On a beautiful Thanksgiving morning, the underrated R. F. A. eleven met the strong White Plains team. It was very evident that the players led by Captain Ray Vaccaro wanted to do the impossible by beating this team. The 12,000 spectators witnessed a hard fought skillfully played high school game. White Plains scored first in the second period. However, Rome followed up with a 70-yard sustained drive, climaxed with a touchdown by Joe Dematteo after which Bill Bird kicked the point, putting Rome in the lead 7-6. By halftime, the White Plains team had crossed our goal again leaving the score 12-7. When the determined ‘‘Orange and Black’’ team returned to the field, they immediately launched another touchdown drive with Jack Kain and Joe Dematteo alter- nating the ball carrying. This all-important drive furnished the winning touchdown when Joe De- matteo scored on an off tackle power play. Bill Bird again converted to make the score 14-12. Throughout the fourth period both teams moved the ball up and down the field but neither team aoe bo to score. By winning this game R. F. A. accomplished what three former Rome teams had failed to do. E, of the Rome Free Academy football team were very proud to have Ray Vaccaro, our worthy captain, named on the Central New York All-Scholastic Football Team: As a player and captain, Ray stood out in sportsmanship and leadership, two characteristics necessary in a great football player. % a : Kneeling left to right: F. The fast skating sextet came home with the Clarkson College Invitation Tour- nament championship in which, Ely Rowland, Red Karlen and Bill Bird were placed on the tournament all-star team while Larry Schneible received honorable mention. The lone set- back was a defeat handed to us by Nichols Academy, eastern states prep school champions. This loss was mainly due to a mild winter which gave the team little opportunity to prac- tice. Asa finale to the season the team won the Lake Placid Tournament and played a tie with a very good Northwood Team. Much of the success of the season can be attributed to the fine performances given by our goalies, and to the superb reserve power of the team. During the whole season the Rome Pucksters played their usual top grade brand of hockey. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Row 1: Barbara Blades, Ruth McLaughlin (Head Varsity Cheerleader), Betty Redden. Or the night of December 3, 1948, the Class of 1949 presented, ‘‘We Shook The Family Tree,’ ’ a delightful comedy in three acts. Action stems from the intense desire of Hildegarde to go to the high school prom. Her mother, with good intentions, arranges for her to go with Freddie Shermer. Hildegarde is mortified because Freddie is required by his parents to wear knickers. Desperate efforts of Hildegarde and Freddie to deal with the crisis only bring on more complications.
