Since all eyes are now turned to the youth of the country, especially those who are about to be on their own, We thought that this would be appropriate. You will probably notice familiar scenes and activities which marked our stay at R. F. A. 9 Dedication FRANKLIN W. PELKEY We, the class of 1946, take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to a man with Whom most of us have had personal contact. To many he has been a teacher, but to more of us he has been a friend and counselor. He has helped many to decide on a vocation and has advised others on choice of colleges. As faculty adviser during our junior year, he gave us invaluable aid. Now, ..- we leave R. F. A., We sincerely hope that succeeding classes will have our Prof on their side as he has been on ours. STROUGH Superintendent of Schools The name Superintendent of Schools causes us to regard the individual so titled with awe and fearsome respect, but behind the authority of oflice We find a personality that breeds warmth, geniality, and the human qualities that endear him to those associated with him. Educator, scholar, administrator, and leader, Mr. Lyndon H. Strough comes to Rome as a Roman. His record is one of which he can be proud. After early education in Rome, he graduated from Oneida High School. From there he Went to Colgate for his degree. His post-graduate Work at the University of Buffalo and Niagara University added Master of Arts to his name. He has served the cause of education by teaching and admin- istering at Oneida, Fulton, and Niagara Falls. ln higher education he has taught at the New York State College for Teachers summer school, and has served as president of state educational organizations, Mr. Strough, We are honored by the return of a native son who now serves us so Well. We bid you, therefore, a hearty Welcome With every wish for your continued success. It is our regret that as you come, We must go: but We are sure that those who follow us Will enjoy the benefit of your administration. As your first graduating class we are highly honored. CARL S. PAIGE Principal We see our principal every day in Rome Free Academy and feel that we know him. Yet, we do not know him until we review his school and sports records. Mr. Paige attended Ogdensburg Free Academy and then St. Lawrence University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He participated in football, basketball, track and wrestling. Before coming to Rome, he was assistant principal of Cmouverneur High School, and principal of Norwood High School. At one time he was president of St. Lawrence County Schoolmen's Association. At present he is treasurer of Section Ill, New York State Public High School Athletic Association and is president of Central Oneida League. The class of 1946 will remember our happy days at R. F. Because of the war our duties as sophomores were lightened. Our sole duty was to decorate our school at Christmas time with the customary Christmas trimmings. As more self-confident juniors, we succeeded in making our Junior Prom not only a social success but also a financial success with the enormous profit of three cents. We enjoyed serving as ushers for class night and commencement. At the highest point in our school career as fearless seniors, we have successfully completed the usual projects of the senior year. Contrary to the usual tradition we held our Senior Play, which proved to be one of the finest projects of the senior year, in December instead of May. Another high point of our senior year was the Senior Ball, held in the latter part of May. As we, the class of '46, end our career at R. F. A., we will always keep 'in mind the pleasure, knowledge, and experience gained throughout our years at our high school alma mater. ' SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Grace Summa . . . , . . . With practically all of last year's back- field either graduated or in the armed forces, the outlook was far from encouraing. During the summer Coach Edkins was appointed head of the physical education department of the Rome schools and a new coach Was to be appointed for foot- ball. The coach, however, did not materialize and Edkins was called upon to fill the vacancy in addition to his duties in his new position. Through his untiring efforts and with the able assistance of Coach Sorenson, R. F. A. turned out a team which, although in and outers, was able to give a good account of them- selves against strong opponents. . l53l VARSITY SQUAD N 1 M U-1 CJ I F5 K 5 2. U L1 E-' .: ra. F. A., through all the mistakes of a green team, lost to the Little Falls eleven 6-O. Then on September 28, the R. F. A. team was handed a 13-6 defeat in a questionable game with Amsterdam High School. With a complete turn about face the Rome under dogs gave a highly rated Auburn eleven a 20-13 defeat on October 5, exhibiting a faultless brand of football. The Turin Streeters kept up this pace to hand the Mt. Pleasant team a 6-O defeat on a very muddy field the following Saturday. On October 19, the R. F. A. gridders suffered their worst defeat at the hands of a strong Watertown eleven when they lost 21-0. October 26 saw a scrappy Rome team handed a 7-O defeat by a heavy Proctor team in the last minute of play. November 3 was a big day for the R. F. A. eleven for they were to invade U.F.A. territory. On a rain-drenched Murnane Field, R.F.A. triumphed over their rivals for the ninth consecutive time, with a 7-O score. After this celebrated victory, the R. F. A. gridders lost to Norwich 27-14. The Norwich team gained 27 points over what seemed like a beaten R. F. A. eleven in the first half, but could not hold a fighting R. F. A. team from getting 14 points in the last half of the game. To top the season, James A. Spargo honored the R. F. A. eleven with his tra- ditional victory banquet. To add to this honor, the team was proud to have one of its members, Mike Orbinati, selected for both the WIBX all-scholastic team and the Syracuse Herald-American all-scholastic team. 1551 DE-O-WAIN-STA 0 1946 Sitting: Ed Fenton, Dick Rung, Martin Tuttle, Carl Calnero, Don Smith. We owe so very much to Mrs. Bates' marvelous direction, Without which We could never have had a hit, A sequel to Growing Pains, Aurenia and William Spence Rouverol's three-act comedy provided everyone with plenty of merriment for it dealt with the late adolescent love life of George and Terry Mclntyre, typical young people of today.
