Previous to 1926 it had been called the Senior Annual. The name De-O-Wain-Sta comes from the Oneida Indian's words for the carrying place, which means the place where boats were carried from one stream to another. The easiest route to the west for the English colonists was by way of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, Wood Creek, Oneida Lake, the Oswego River, and the Great Lakes. Along this route there were portages or carrying places, the most important of which was at Rome between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek, its general location being what is now Dominick Street. Not until 1797 were Wood Creek and the Mohawk River connected by a canal for canoes and heavier boats, although it had been a very important place in transportation routes even before the Revolution. Until that time any- one traveling westward was obliged to carry his water craft across the land which was to mark the site of our city.
