Previous to 1926 it had been called the Senior Annual. The name De-O-Wain-Sta comes from the Oneida Indian's words for the carrying place, which means the place where boats were carried from one stream to another. The easiest route to the west for the English colonists was by way of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, Wood Creek, Oneida Lake, the Oswego River, and the Great Lakes. Along this route there were portages or carrying places, the most important of which was at Rome between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek, its general location being what is now Dominick Street. Not until 1797 were Wood Creek and the Mohawk River connected by a canal for canoes and heavier boats, although it had been a very important place in transportation routes even before the Revolution. Until that time any- one traveling westward was obliged to carry his water craft across the land which was to mark the site of our city. Tribute to Servicemen Without a sign his sword the brave man draws, And asks no omen but his country's cause. -Homer. Rome Free Academy's sons in the service of our country now total 1,550 Those of her sons who have made the supreme sacrifice number 27 These were honored in their generation, And were the glory of the times. -Ecclesiasticus, GEORGE R. STALEY Superintendent of Schools Our Memories of George R. Staley In his forty-four years as superintendent of the Rome Public Schools, Mr. Staley has given us, the students, a treasure of pleasant memories. His friendliness and democratic attitude have given our school life an added meaning. His advice as a friend and his counsel as an educator have proved to be invaluable to us as individuals. He has shown enthusiasm in all our student activities and outside interests. His warmth and friendliness to each one of us has strengthened our deep admiration for him. Mr. Staley, We have been very fortunate to have been under your guidance during our school career. We will always remember your visits to our classrooms, although they were sometimes embarrassing, and we respect you for your interest in our work. Yet we will remem- ber also your gift for applying the right touch of humor when the occasion demanded it. It is with great regret that we bid you farewell. We also regret that the students of future years will not benefit by your friend- ship and wisdom. CARL S. PAIGE ' We of the class of 1945 sincerely hope that you have found this, your Hrst year at R F A, to be a welcome and pleasant one. We are honored to be your first graduating class here, and we deeply appreciate the many ways in which you have helped, and the friendly encouragement you have given us. In spite of present world conditions, We shall always look back upon our last year at Rome Free Academy as a very pleasant and profitable one, and we feel equally sure that this has been in a large measure due to your efforts to make it so. May Rome Free Academy, under your guidance, continue to be the proud institution that We shall hope it to be. ' DE-O-WAIN-STA o 1945 List of Faculty Principal Foreign Languages CARL S. R. F. A. was preparing to enter its 54th football season. This year we had three home games and four out of town. So with a new coach, Charlie Edkins: a new style, T formation: new men, R. A. Ffs best: and a few weeks' of practice, we were ready to tackle our first opponent -the strong Norwich team. NORWICH 13-R. F. A. 0 The home team made a good impression on the field and under the lights of Colonel's Park against the heavier and more experienced Norwich team. Though outplayed in the Hrst half. we came back strong in the second half. holding them scoreless and threatening once when a pass play put us inside their 25-yard line. Joe Graziano sparked on the line while Captain Eddie Sezna shone in the punting department. AUBURN I3 - R. F. A. 6 Tied 6-6, the outclassed Rome eleven was beaten by a lucky break that went for Auburn's second touchdown with less than two minutes left to play. Mike Greci and Bob Curley were outstanding on our defense, while Ed Sezna's passing and Jack Abbott sparked our offense. MOUNT PLEASANT 0 - R. F. A. 13 A soggy rain-soaked field welcomed the Academy gridders at Schenectady and both teams fought on even terms during the first half of the game. In the second half, Ed Sezna and Walt Kulisz tore off two long runs to ring up two tallies for our side. with a pass to Joe Trela for the extra point. So with one victory and two defeats, we were set for another road game with Watertown. l5ll DE-o-WAIN-STA . l9i Football---Continued WATERTOWN 13 - R. F. A. 6 With Dick Guisinger and Mike Cireci injured and out the greater part of the game, our defenses laplsed in the last 60 seconds of play and Watertown scored on a pass to break the 6-6 deadloc . PROCTOR 6 - R. F. A. 19 In the iirst minute of play, Captain Ed Sezna piloted the Rome team to a touchdown. Stunned, the heavy Proctor team did not recover and we scored twice more before Proctor got its lone touchdown of the game in the last minute of play. U UTICA 0 -R. F. A. 12 With three defeats and two victories now tucked under our belts, the no longer green team was ready for the traditional game with Utica Free Academy. Playing on a soggy field but without rain, R. F. A. settled down for a rough and tough game, but used the airlanes for scoring their two touchdowns, giving Coach Charles Edkins a win over Ken Edkins, the Utica coach. The game was hard going all the way, with frequent punting on both sides. Ed Sezna's punting highlighted the day, along with Greg Patala's smooth passing. and the rough work of the linemen who were there to open the holes needed for that big pile of yardage and those shining touchdowns. LITTLE FALLS 20 - R. F. A. 0 After its victory over Utica. the team must have gotten a little overconfident for its meet- ing with Little Falls, because, as the score shows, Little Falls was the better team. Our team, as a whole, had a hard time trying to stop the heavier and determined Falls team, and only threatened once in the second quarter when we were deep in Falls territory. So winding up the season with a defeat by a team which went undefeated through the whole season, Rome's grid men hung up their uniforms until next season. Looking back over the season, the teams we played were the toughest Coach Edkins could find to break in his green-but eager footballers. So in the record go three wins and four losses. This year's team was the first team in 13 years to lose four games in one season: but with the high spirit of the boys, a new style of play with which to work and a coach that knows his football and teaches' it, next year's team should have better luck-with more experienced boys on the team. We of this year's football team wish the next team luck-and a lot of touchdowns. FOOTBALL TEAM EDWARD SEZNA, Captain Joseph Trela, William Walker, Joseph Graziano, Frank Demski, Michael Orbinatti, James Lowerre, Robert Curley, Gregory Patala, Chester Szmurlo, Walter Kulisz, Kenneth Pace, Robert Kolhepp, Douglas Keller, Bruce Wightman, Michael Greci, Richard Guisinger, Carl Calnero, Joseph Casadei, Gus Guida, Jack Abbott, Donald Smith, Norman Cihisalbert, Samuel D'Ambrosi, Pat Curley, Leonas LeFevre, William Stahlberger, Armando Nigro, Angelo Ceci, Dominick Summa, Samuel Schroeder, Raymond Heilig, Robert Totaro, Robert Harris, Jack Leffert, Joseph DeMatteo, Rudolph Filippini, Enrico DeSantis, Joseph Perri, James Perry, Frank Frasca, Ray- mond Vaccaro, Anthony Cicotti, Frank Morasco, Richard Page. g?Manager, Wylie Tooke: Assistant Managers, Craig Williams, Jack ooke. llflfmyfkr salsa DE -O-WAIN-STA o 1945 Fira! row: Mart Tuttle, Eddie Fenton, Captain Joseph Graziano, Dick Rung, Carl Calnero. With only one holdover from last year. our boys had a fairly good edge on most of their opponents in height, with four men over six feet tall. but lacked speed. Meeting oppo- nents more experienced in clever ball handling, our team was sometimes at a loss. We were invited to Watertown to play in a tournament and got as far as the semi-nnals when the tired and outplayed boys bowed to U.F.A,, losing by a fair margin. All in all it was a good season. Everyone had fun and, most of all, a lot of experience was gained for next year. So to next year's team we wish the best of luck and a good season.
