William G. Fletcher, (1914-1968) B.A., Clark University M.A., Yale University Ph.D., Yale University If there was a symbol of an educated man at Rollins, most students would immediately think of Dr. William Fletcher. He was the epitome of the contemporary man. He was a man who was educated not only in the realm of academia, but also in the world of human experience. A generator of enthusiasm and awareness, Dr. Fletcher was endowed with a special quality of empathy for his students. He represented a man who was diplomatic, yet strong in his convictions . . . Who valued the worthiness of past tra- ditions, yet was receptive to progressive thought . . . who accepted new responsibilities, yet was always mindful of old obligations . . . who was an outstanding professor, yet whose interest in students extended beyond the classroom. Dr. Fletcher was an asset to the college as well as to the national government. His opinion was sought not only by students, but also by fellow scholars. He had an innate ability to recognize the true potential of his students and an ultimate objective to encourage their awareness and utilization of their talents. 3 5 7 15 [9 J MISS TOMOKAN Jane Carrison In choosing Miss Tomokan for 1969, the staff has honored a senior whose tireless efforts and activities have contributed much to the spirit and name of Rollins. Jane Carrison is one of those rare people who possess beauty, spirit, liveliness and an active interest in student affairs while maintaining a high scholastic average. An English major from Jackson- ville, Florida, Jane is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, of which she is Corresponding Secretary. In stu- dent organizations she holds mem- bership in Lower Court, the Chapel Staff, the Student-Faculty Adminis- tration Council and serves as Secre- tary of the Board of Directors of the Student Center. Jane is also on the Editorial Board of the Fla- mingo. m - wmmm 21 28 MARY MARSHALL ALLEN History and Public Affairs Mt. Doni 73 FRESHMAN CLASS 1969 ORIENTATION 1969 With, a new title, new format, and a new stalt ot adminis- trators and selected upper classmen, College Preparation Week presented three hundred and thirty-one screaming freshmen with their first taste of Rollins College. A number of examinations covering the new students ' integrated organizational flexibilities and capabilities, as well as his balanced transitional projection, and, of course, physical fitness were combined with meetings with advi- sors, and lectures dealing with aspects of college life, in a successful effort to introduce the class of 1972 to the fundamentals ot existence at Rollins. 77 There were the usual highpoints from Orientation Weeks of years past. The Union Mixer was an overwhelming success, as was the mass migration to the West Side Pool. It will, however, never take the place of the cool clear waters of Lake Virginia in the hearts of the Rollins . Family. An explanation of the Rollins College Hour-Glass Curriculum was met with the usual enthusiasm, as was the wide variety of freshman courses available for the three terms of the school year. An important aspect of College Preparation Week, not to be overlooked, is, of course, the number of lasting friendships which begin every year at this time. Both the freshmen and upperclassmen (who were fortunate enough to be allowed on campus at this time) enjoyed the opportunity of establishing new relationships with people of varied backgrounds; people who ultimately become an integral part of the Rollins Family. A vast amount of credit must be given Mr. Richard Stabell, Chairman of the College Preparation Week Committee for the time he devoted to the successful reorganization of the old Orientation Week. Our thanks also go to the student chairmen, Jack Myers and Josie Gittes, without whose dedi- cated assistance, College Preparation Week could not have served the useful purpose that it did. Led by head Coach Gordon Howell and Assistant Coach Boyd Coffee, the team achieved a 9-1-2 record with victories over some of the strongest teams in the Southeast. The season began with the first annual blue-gold inter-squad game. This exhibition was a display of the Rollins talent which led the team to its many triumphs. A major highlight of the season was the first game in which Rollins defeated the University of Miami which had long been an invincible rival. The 2-1 upset gave notice to all that Rollins was to be a strong contender. The Tars then breezed through their next two games, defeat- ing Florida Presbyterian and St. Leo College of Dade City. Rollins first major rival, Florida Southern College, provided stiff competition for the Tar offense and defense, but suc- cumbed to a relentless attack, being defeated 2-1 in the two teams ' first encounter. Their second game proved to be even more exciting but the Tars again won, this time by the score of 3-2. It will be remembered that during the ' 67 season Rollins and Florida Southern Soccer Teams shared first place honors in the now disbanded Florida Inter-Collegiate Conference. Rollins first major disappoint- ment came when the Tars tied a strong Georgia State team in a hotly contested match. The Tars then came back with two big wins against arch rival Stetson University, and a second win over St. Leo College. Rollins ' trip to Miami proved to be the low point of the season as Miami handed Rollins its first and only loss. Still suffering from their previous loss, the team traveled to Jacksonville University, to face what had been termed t he strongest team in Florida. Jacksonville managed to tie the Tars, coming back in the second half to make up a two goal deficit. Rollins final homecoming game on Saturday, the thirtieth of November, proved to be the highpoint of the season. In front of several hundred alumni and friends of the college, the Tars whipped the Hatters by the unbelievable score of 7-0. This proved to be a glorious ending to a great season. 138 In analyzing the success of this year ' s team, the strongest in the state of Florida, credit must be given to Coach Howell. The goals he set for the team seemed unattainable, and yet his enthusiasm and desire for success were so great that it carried over to the team members; they too were instilled with the strong desire to win and in his words, be champions. Coa ch Howell did, however, have outstanding material to work with. Wilson Flohr, All South center forward, led the impressive lineup of seniors on the team. Cliff Montgomery proved to be the ironman of the defense, making fantastic recoveries at his center halfback posi- tion. Goalie Jim Hardee, who for the past two seasons had been under the tutorage of All State Goalie Dick Myers, allowed less than two goals per game. Jeff Burns used his size and weight to best advantage in sparking the team at the left halfback position. Gale Coleman, All American pitcher on the Tars baseball team, proved to be a valuable asset to the soccer team as well. Underclassmen, also, shared the limelight as a number of sophomores and juniors broke into the starting lineup. Halfbacks Dave Heidt, Chas. Haywood, and Noel Eggleston, all out- standing players, provided the team with the necessary speed and stamina to keep both the offense and defense at its best. The outside positions were manned by sophomore Mike Brelsford and junior Robin Leech, both speedsters and great ball handlers. The inside positions were left in the capable hands of junior Bill Koch and sophomore Lee Hildenbiddle. Starting fullbacks Buzz Friend and Paul Wright kept the opposition out of the defensive perimeter very successfully this year, allowing the opposition less than twenty shots per game. Other standouts on the team were inside Stan Gale, junior goalie Chuck Kitchell, sophomore fullback Chas. Bellker, freshman wing Doug Welsh, sophomore halfback Jeff Bestic, and freshman center forward Pete Williams. Upper Right: Jim Hardee Below: Dave Heidt, Jeff Bestic Right: Bill Koch, Pete Williams 140 Prospects for next year are excellent. With only five seniors leaving Coach Howell may have some difficulty filling the center forward and center halfback positions; with a large group of enthusiastic underclassmen, how- ever, he should be able to find the right men for the job. The College can be truely proud of this year ' s soccer team and its fine new coach. It is believed that the years to come will bring even more success, and if this year is any indication, the Rollins Soccer Team may be nationally prominent within the next few seasons. Upper Right: Stan Gale, Terry Lucke Middle Left: Coach Howell Middle Right: Cliff Montgomery Left: Bill Koch 141 VARSITY BASKETBALL Taking a cue from the soccer team, the Tar basketball squad surprised nearly everyone by registering Rollins ' best record in more than a decade. The pre-season outlook was bleak since only three letter- men returned from a team that won 11 games the year be- fore, but, buoyed by the new Enyart Alumni Field House and vociferous student support, the young Tars matured quickly. Coach Boyd Coffie ' s cagers first indicated 1968-1969 would be more than a rebuilding year in the season opener, chris- tening the new field house with a 77-72 victory over arch- rival Stetson University before a capacity Homecoming crowd. Later the Tars proved they had come of age by throttling Bethune-Cookman College and its All-American Johnnie Allen 83-76. The season ' s success was clearly a team effort, combining balanced scoring, strong rebounding and stingy defense. Super sophomore Lawrence Martinez, sixth man most of his freshman season, was Coffie ' s chief weapon as he canned long jumpers and fast break layups for around 20 points a game. Junior guard, Frank Valenti, who sat out the 1967-1 968 campaign after lettering as a freshman, emerged as the heart of Rollins ' offense. Stealing the ball and es- tablishing a school record for assists, he consistently scored in double figures. Right: Boyd Coffie. Opposite page: Jim Murphy and Tim Shea. 144 145 Freshman jumping jack Tim Shea, whose starting debut coincided with the Tars ' mid season surge, rapidly became one of the most exciting players ever to wear Rollins ' blue- and-gold. Averaging more than 10 points each night, Shea remained near the team lead in rebounding although he usually started in the backcourt. Despite erratic point production, juniors Jim Murphy, 6- foot-4, and Cliff Livingston, 6-foot-7, were outstanding de- fensively and gave Rollins the rebounding might necessary for a winning campaign. Throughout the season, Coffie extolled the virtues of his substitutes, often referring to his eight regulars rather than his five starters. Providing this necessary depth were freshman Dw ight Higgs, sophomore Mark Freidinger and junior Rich West- fal. Higgs, 6-foot-4, added punch up front, while Freidin- ger and Westfal lent experience to the backcourt. Freshman Rick Liber, Chuck Morton, Rick Paprocki, Den- ny Scott and Steve Winchester displayed flashes of bril- liance in junior varsity competition. Guard, Greg Fitz- patrick, the only senior on the squad, and junior, Larry- Strickland, proved to be valuable reserves. Next season ' s success may be even more exciting. Only one of Coffie ' s 14 cagers is graduating. Li .- Larry Martinez. Below Jan Hopkins. 1 sr 147 VARSITY CREW From: Diego Andrade, C. Lyden, S. Lyden, M. Arnold. Middle: F. Margerson, J. Bestic, D.
