TOMOKAN 68 ROLLINS COLLEGE WINTER PARK, FLORIDA ROBERT R. FARWELL, EDITOR TRISTRAM C. COLKET, IV, ASST. EDITOR THEODORE R. FLAGG, PHOTOGRAPHER Fred W. Hicks, A. B., M. A., Ph.D Some words in dedication: the 1968 Tomokan, in keeping with current journalistic trends, has dis- pensed with the traditional dedication to the re- vered trustee, retiring professor, or some altruistic generality. Instead we have chosen to recognize that man who for the past four years has been the most dynamic force on this campus. Fred W. Hicks as- sumed the office of Dean of Men during the sum- mer of 1964. Since that time the by-word has been reorganize, revamp, and reorient Rollins men and women; to what? Well, that ' s for you to decide. But one might venture a slight indiscretion — the old Rollins is dead. Whether it be the Interfraternity Council, Lower Court, the new Social Code, the Reorganization, Men Counselors, the Dean ' s Grant and Aid Fund, off campus housing for men, or the Beanery on Friday night, Dean Hicks influence and leadership have permeated every aspect of the Rollins scene. Time, patience and F. W. Hicks cured us of our worst habits. His courage, foresight, and di- plomacy have been of inestimable value. Our thanks and best wishes for the future. 3 Tomokan 1968 attempts to tell it like it was. We use pictures and occasionally the chosen word to convey what life at Jolly Roily means. This book portrays the year — then and now. Bonnie, Clyde, and C. W. Moss; The Graduate, and 1-A status. Specifically: the games we played, the groves we ripened in, the grind to which almost all conceded. Now aren ' t you excited? Lie down then. Where palm and pines hide your girl and you — This was the year. A little good, a little bad, a little different . . . Yet not too far off from the rest. People are the variable factor. And in twenty years with retrospect, We ' ll look and feel higher in our embroidered balloons. After all, life ' s all in the way you feel, isn ' t it? ROLLINS 68 A more subtle Perspective; Taking off the shades, A more discerning look into our time. 7 When Orion guarded the Eastern horizon — Senior men moved off campus, Freshmen were deferred; Women ' s hours were extended. Weissman, E. 77 There were few things different about the collective uncertainty known as Orientation week this past year. It began one quiet Sunday in late September when the temperature was about seventy degrees at 8 AM; but despite the heat, the traffic, the frustration of registering, and the confusion of parents, three hun- dred and forty-eight freshmen and transfer students were admitted Fall Term, 1967. The apparent ease with which this feat was accomplished was deceiv- ing, because many long and exhaustive hours had gone into the planning and execution of this opera- tion. Dr. Fletcher, head of the History and Social Science Department, headed the committee; ably aided by Dan Pincetich and Susie Thompson. Most of the time life was nothing but a maze of blanks to be filled in; swimming tests to be taken; Tomokati pictures made; summer reading assignments to review or read for the first time; and last, but not least, meeting your faculty adviser. There were a few brief moments when one might reflect on one ' s predica- ment, but not for very long. 81 83 Abbey, R. Allen, M. Allen, D. Allgood, C. Anderson, J. Christie, R. Anteblian, M. The various contestants were judged on their poise, beauty, and personality amid the traditional surroundings of the Gamma Phi courtyard. Runners-up were Miss Sheri Housel and Miss Chira Kirkland. Miss Julia Frank was chosen as Miss Rollins for 1967-1968. Julie is a sophomore from Pom- pano Beach, and her extracurricular activities include water skiing and intramural basketball. She was sponsored by Kappa Kappa Gamma. Congratulations to a most outstanding Senior woman, who, in the opinion of the 1968 Tomokan staff, has displayed not only the outward traits of beauty — charm, poise, and graciousnes; but also that indefin- able quality which radiates from within, permeating the campus around her. To acknowledge her services to Rollins: Carole has served for two years as president of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, as well as having maintained an active interest in student affairs, serving as secre- tary of the Student Association in 1966-67, and as a member of the Student-Administrative Council in 1967-68. As a member of Key Society and secretary of Libra, Carole has displayed an admirable and consistently high academic standard. Carole ' s home is in Syracuse, New York. She will receive a Bachelor of Arts in history upon graduation in June. 93 QUIETLY WINSOME AMID THE MOSS DRAPED CYPRES I - VIBRANT, ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN THE TURN O) ' TIME OF THE WALRUS Above: Connie Griffin, Right: Linda Buck. Jane started the ritual oi nightly shaving cream battles; Ronny found it in her pillow, Cheryl got it in the mouth. First string Softball catcher Andrews showed her enthusiasm on the field and broke her finger. Frog enjoyed Harpers. Too bad Cheri, Ellen, and Sandy never saw the end of the dog races — pood try anyway. Nan and Cathy pulled it up but couldn ' t pull it off, and Bisky wasn ' t fooled for a minute. And Tricia still doesn ' t understand, ' lied for first place in the Good H, msekeeping Contest were Josie and Bebe. Ann got her annual Christmas present, a phonics book, would you believe volume 18? Debbie, that was quite a crew you en- tertained. We got Anne Corley to sing bass. Judi and Kathy, how was the outfield? We serenaded Mary and her Danny-boy. Laurie was our best P.R. girl, or at least Jan must have thought so. Don ' t worry Norman, Jimmy Durante has one too, but we still love you. And here ' s to Harpers, the haven of the actives. Yours sincerely, wasting away. — ' When I ' m Sixty-Four ' 185 PRESIDENT HUGH F. MCKEAN After 27 years as President of Rollins College, Mr. McKean continues to bring dignity and esteem to his administrative capacities. The strides which Rollins has made in the past four years testify to this as seen in the DuBois Health Center, the Enyhart Memorial Field House, the A. G. Bush Science Center, and the Roy E. Crummer School of Business Ad- ministration. Mr. McKean has endeavored to maintain the small liberal arts tradition. In his address to the general college on April 23, 1965, he stressed the intrinsic values of a small college dedicated to the liberal arts tradition. On this campus, education begins with a deep interest in and a respect for the individual. The reason is sound. Those qualities which make each of us unique and therefore our- selves may be our talents. To develop the talents of the student has been the aim of Rollins for 81 years. But talents are wasted if a life is wasted. Rollins stresses the pursuit of sound values as well as the pursuit of knowledge. 187 ADMINISTRATION Alfred Jackson Hanna, A.B., L.H.D. Buzzing with activity, gossip and hard work, the office was second home to the staff. Hard work made fast friends of the Spur editors; no one will ever forget Mark ' s daily Weill, PEOPLE, you WON ' T believe WHAT happened! ... or Patrick swearing in German, beating on desks and scaring poor Josie to death ... or Scott who never speaks until he has something to say that makes you laugh for an hour . . . or Susan losing everything important ... or Lynn, who deserved the World ' s Waiting Award ... or Josie who got a little gitte toward the end of the year . . . But most of all, we ' ll always remember our rare Bird who got his dugs, got fired, but remained Editor-in-Disguise all the time! From the first issue, the Spur pursued one campaign after the next — hacking hair, changing hours, killing virginity, closing doors, and climaxing in our Library Probe. In spite of the 5 A.M. Friday mornings at the printers, jaunts to London and New York, suffering grades and muckraking, it ' s been a great year, and a great Sandspur. Meet your classmates, meet your time, blow your mind (or lunch, depending on your frame of reference.) Life was the Union with strains of your favorite tunes, a ' buzz on ' in the groves, a helmet, Harpers, or now, maybe the Round Table. Our time was compressed into hours spent on papers, screams ( with ' cool ' ) at a horror show, quiet walks, a few talks, and many, many meaningful statements. Yes ' cool ' was our world, Procrastinate — our creed. Live for the now like ' Bonnie and Clyde ' — tomorrow was plenty of time. Here ' s hoping you remember you ' re real. First I must explain that the 1968 Totnokan was completed on March 1. No copy, pic- tures, or pages were sent after that date, consequently Spring Term has been omit- ted. My apologies to those sports, activities, and college functions which are either ab- sent or lacking proper representation. We endeavored to produce a publication which would be representative of the stu- dent and his environment. In a final analysis, whether or not our effort has been justified, only you can decide. A yearbook exists fundamentally for remem- brance sake. Let me know what you think about 2001. My personal thanks and appreciation to Ted Flagg, who worked so diligently to main- tain the highest possible standard in our photography this year; and to Tris Colket, who as my associate editor, contributed significantly to the success of the final product.
