THE QUEST BEGINS. Man searches the boundless limita- tions of his physical environment. Needle-tipped palm fronds jut through the tangles of moss. Grass sifts lazily beneath the soft trod of bare feet. Man and nature commune. The seasons are— not. Temperature dictates apparel, but not change. Short sleeves blur into sweaters and back in- to short sleeves. Knees are bared, then bundled. Ankles remain exposed, scoff- ing the elements. But nothing changes. The omnipresent sun strangely never meets the omnipresent rain. Every- thing is Same, only viewpoint is dif- ferent. All is in the eyes. No. All is through the eyes and in the total, the internal being of Man. A tactual, sensory . . . ESSENCE. Man ex- periences contact— touch— with the begin- ning of his quest. The eyes remain wide open, ready to accept commitment. But the cause is, as yet, unknown. Drive is there. Direction comes later. Perhaps. But, yet, still, most important, the quest has begun.

THE QUEST CONTINUES. Man discovers . . . man. With arms out- stretched, Man rushes, hesitant, into the mass of men. A mass of individuals which slowly becomes simply Individuals. Man touches with his mind. Sight is sacrificed to communication, to the nebulous substance of emotion. Man laughs. More important, Man smiles. Most important, Man feels. He touches and is touched. The common bond of humanity, of intellect, of interest, is secondary to an uncom- mon bond: Empathy. Man experiences the joy of sadness and the despair of meaning. Communication flows over coffee cups . . . through darkness . . . despite silence . . . des- pite noise . . . over footlights and on all sides of round tables. From Man to Man. And the quest is— not complete. Man is filled, yet unfulfilled. Lacking is direction. Drive is strong. Man pushes toward . . . toward . . . Toward. But, yet, still, most important, the quest is continued.
