The Tars were paced this year by Mike Watson, Bob May, Bill Tone, Elias Terzoupoulas, Deme- trious Coutsoloutus, Tibor Menyhart, Ed Leal, Wally Hubbard, and Enrique Huber. Ts 79 Beneath the sometimes turbulence of the Rollins day there is a force or not a force exactly but a way — for every time of trial there is a test which makes a man a man or else he fails. Although he must stand or fall on his own merits, there are persons and places and people and things that can make more bearable his way, For every chance he takes he either gains or loses, loses or gains, but the test is in the taking of the chance. For those who try and fail, or try and win, there must always be a place from which to try again. The Chapel is a base for such a start to c ome, to others it ' s the end. But always, it is there a symbol serene. S I wordless pictures FRESHMAN SHOW Rivaling Russian claims as originators of major technological advances down through the ages, Quo Vadimus, the 1 962 Freshman Show, depicted Rollins students and faculty as the real progenitors of progress. Its cast of 90 portrayed such historic personages as Julius Caesar, Robin Hood, Leonardo Da Vinci and Cleopatra depicting Rollins progress from the Stone Age to the 21st Century. Where are we going? asks the Freshman Show, to which we answer ahead. SHAKESPEAREANA Once again under Mrs. Dean, something spontaneous and fresh and full of reverence for genius is produced with a touch of sun and fun that leaves its knowledge enriched in the mind as the audience carries away with it a sweetly-assimilated quotation, a flower, and a new approach to Shakespeare. ¥ V STUDENT GOVERNMENT Government by the students: a dream of its leaders for years was realized in principle spring term of last year, and approved by the faculty in November of this year. Its laws give the students the right to discipline themselves through student courts as well as make their own rules, with the Ad Building and housemothers acting as counselors to student leaders. Growing with Rollins, the new Student Association, in its first year under its own rules, has stirred favorable comment from students and faculty. Faculty attitude can be summed up by saying the best way to get maturity is to expect it. Coach Dan Nymicz cannot be criticized, nor can the team. Though a disastrous season, the following men showed some good moments : Leon Hollon, Ralph Tan- chuk, Mike Bailey, Dennis Casey, Tom Weber, Butch Hearn, Phil Hunt, Allen Burris, Jeff Hertz, and Pat Farnsworth. Mike Bailey, Robert Musante, Larry Johnson, Tom Weber, Ken Salmon, Alan Burris, Jim McCracken, Dennis Casey, Rick Kel] Philip Hurt, Leon Hollon, Dave Tanchuck, Pat Farnsworth, Butch Hearn, Coach Dan Nymicz, Ralph Tanchuck, Jeff Heitz, St Femerling. 116 117 INTRAMURALS Inter-fraternity athletics were once again domi- nated by the X-Club. In football, the Club raced through an undefeated season with little competition, while Sigma Nu took tennis. In basketball, Sigma Nu twice lost to the Club, and was beaten once by Delta Chi and once by Lambda Chi. Delta Chi also upset the X-Club in one contest. This Spring, it appears that Sigma Nu and X-Club will battle it out for honors in Softball with Lambda Chi and TKE as runners-up. TKE improvements promise to provide Rollins with a highly competitive intra- mural program. Credit should go to Doctor C. L. Varner for a job well done in the intramural league. Some outstanding intramural athletes have been Duane Galbreath, John Shallenberg- er, Bob Dettling, Brazel Moore, Douglas Baxen- dale, Keith Briethhaupt, Tom Doolittle, John Hughes, John Berliner, Bob Fox, Jim Emerson and James Carl Sw an. 11!) Spring : 125 FIESTA 130 Usually Fiesta, like Christmas, comes but once a year, and the students are w hirled into the vortex of its activity, but this year the tempo slowed down to an easy informality, embodying the slow, languorous, easy life of siesta and serape, the epitome of the word for this most famous of occasions. Fiesta. 131 Jane Burdick Miss Rollins Barbara Hogan Miss Tomokan Sandra Norvell Fiesta Queen ANNIE RUSSELL THEATRE To wax poetic on the stage is fine for little actors and little philosophers, but the great, the grand thing is to take an action or a scene and make it spring out full-born. This demands an art, a discipline, a love for all that is in meaning. Between the planning and the performance, between the people and the props, between the utterance and the action is the essence of A. R. T. THIEVES ' CARNIVAL Thieves ' Carnival, the French farce offered up as the first play of the season, was a kaleidoscope of color (thanks to John Ezell). It offers pickpockets, (John Ott and Bob Haines) rocking swings, bored and beautiful young women, (Sally Off: Eve) sweet and naive young things, (Sally Schrieber: Juliette) a zany, role-playing mother, (Dana Ivy) and a Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum pair in Rich Chapman and Gordon Reagan, the gallant Frenchmen. Its fast timing and tongue- in-cheek view are well presented by Robert Chase and calculated to please those with a taste for delicious fakery, and the color and vitality of real theatre. LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL The stormy world of Eugene Gant (David Ranier) is centered around his father ' s marble works and his mother ' s boarding house. Between these poles of experience Eugene meets the lodgers, the lovers and the southern citizens that lure him on to the big wide world out there. Trying to hold her son, Dana Ivey as the mother, practically destroys his chance for an education that the father, played by Peter Kellogg, finally salvages. Although a challenging play, John Ezell and Director Miller, with their fine cast, produce a sensitive and moving piece. 145 STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE The theatre season reached a highpoint for this or any other year with the ART production of Tennessee Williams ' Streetcar Named Desire, a play that Director Chase had been waiting to present for many years. With a cast that could have held its own on any stage in the country, and sets by John Ezell, Streetcar became real and vital. Though hard to single out any one individual for praise, it would have to be Anne Lynn Kettles as the neurotic Blanche. Anne Lynne and the rest of the cast gave a new slant and a new pathos to the Williams ' play. Gary Brouhard, Sally Off, and Peter Kellogg also did very competent jobs in their individual roles. ANIMATED MAGAZINE Animag: In which we step out of the flow of history to gain perspective on its events. The 35th edition brought to Rollins men who them- selves are making history: U S. Senator George Smathers, NASA Administrator Robert C. Seamans, Jr., Florida Governor Bryant and Japanese Ambassador Koichiro Asakai. The future of Rollins, as well as all higher education in the United States was examined. With plans for a new space school, Rollins is asking What lies ahead? and looking, as are scientists and theologists and philosophers all over the world, at the riddles unanswered in the universe. W P R K Manifesting student interest in communications, and in the world of ideas in action, WPRK covers central Florida with a sane intermission of intelligent programming, serving as a relief from popular radio. Mr. Frutchey, Director of WPRK ROLLINS MUSEUM The L. C. Whiton Peruvian expedition sponsored by Rollins College was headed by Mr. Whiton of Maitland and was the first group ever to go among the primitive Isconahua tribe. An account of the trip, Isconahua of the Remo, ha s been published and a collection of their artifacts added to the Rollins Museum. Members of the expedition were Richard Momsen, Nat Young, and Bruce Green. 151 152 Coach Norm Copeland ' s netters, although TENNIS counting mostly on first and second year men, arc on their way to another fine season. Al- ternating between numbers one and two arc sophomore Mike Grieco and freshman Juan Connill, Rollins 1 latest Latin American im- port. Behind these two players are Duanc Ackerman, Tom Doolittlc, Bill Law, Al Thomas, Jim Treadway, and John L. Hughes. Some of the Tars ' noteworthy competition this year was with the University of Pennsyl- vania, Miami, Columbia, Amherst, Lamar Tech, Georgia Tech, Duke and Presbyterian. Coach Dan Nymicz gets consistent effort from the men on the team, made up of very good freshmen as well as seasoned seniors. Rollins seems set in its format of win- ning teams. Outstanding play has been shown by Roily Lamontagne, Mickey Van Gerbig, Jerry Doser, Bob May, Bob Kirouax, Todd Read, Bill Cigich, Bob Reagan, and Gene McAullife. The women have been represented by Jane Woodward, Judy Jones, and Martha Page. 156 GOLF BASEBALL A good conclusion to an already sizzling beginning of the 96 ' 2 sea- son will take the ' fats to the NCAA play-offs in New Jersey. With bench strength lacking in the past few years, Coach Justice looks for- ward to a winning season both in FIC, independent and inter-league games. Returning lettermen include Ken Salmon, leading pitcher; George Blaisus, Ed Flory, and in- fielders Jim Cooper, Jim Emerson ; outfielders Jess Lee, and FIC star team member Doug Baxendale. To supplement the line-up are pitchers Jerry Joondeph, Jim McCracken, and Terry Williams. Behind the plate is Braz Moore. Powerful hit- ting freshman Bob Ennis rounds out the infield. Backup men are infield- ers Bob Musante, Allan Burris, Mickey Clark, as well as outfielders Larry Johnson and Doug Cordon. The Tars are, first row: Ed Flory, Jim Emmerson, Bob Musante, Jeff Kline, Terry Williams, Doug Gordon, Allan Burris, Larry Johnson, Braz Moore; second row: Jim McCracken, Bob Ennis, Jim Cooper, Ralph Tanchuk, Doug Baxendale, Jesse Lee, Bob Detling, Mickey Clark. 159 160 161 The Rollins oarsmen, back for another suc- cessful year, have been chalking up wins against northern and southern crews. The Tars to date have defeated Purdue, Am- herst, American International, and Iowa. This year the varsity made its first pre-Dad Vail trip in years to New York where they rowed against Columbia. The Captain of this year ' s Tar shell was Ed Rupp, and Coach Bradley ' s two new additions to the team were John Morrissey and Bill Janecek. 9 |f f | § f 9 Varsity: Kneeling: Bill Janecek, Cox., Dr. U.
