The Council officers, together with group representatives, are advised by the Student Deans and work loward solving problems ol the Student Association as a whole, promoting school interest and activities. Much is accomplished through committees that fall under the jurisdiction of Council. Two projects tackled were the traffic problem, and promotion ol an electric board installed in the Student Center. One of the major feats accomplished annually under the guidan Council is the Fiesta Week, the profits of which go to scholarships. The executive rostrums of the upper classes filled after fall elections. A week later the freshman got underway by exhibiting its enthusiasm and class coh during its election campaign. Honoraries Serve Campm Each year at Rollins College, both students and faculty arc chosen on the basis ol leadership, helpfulness, and service, to represent the several honorary organizations. These various groups are on the campus to promote interest in all student activities, to handle and direct student study halls, and to develop high scholastic averages. The O.O.O.O. is the men ' s secret honorary organization which helps to create, maintain, and foster traditions in the student body. Omicron Delta Kappa is the national honorary fraternity for both Junior and Senior men who have proven themselves outstanding in service and leadership. The twin fraternity of ODK is the Order of Libra. This fraternity is an honorary service organization for women who have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders in extracurricular and scholastic activities. The national publication, WHO ' S WHO IN AMERI- CAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES, has selected nine seniors who will appear in this year ' s edition. They are nominated on the basis of leadership, scholarship, and service during their four years at Rollins College. There was a Stetson vs. Rollins basketball game, an organ vespers ' service at the Chapel rendered by Catherine Crozier, and several French plays presented by French students at the Fred Stone Theatre. Tar Five Improves With tlic return of Rollins ' All-Conference, All-State Chick Bezemer for his final year at pivot, the Tar Five proved to be a tough bunch in all opposition. This year ' s Dan Nymicz-coached basket-ball team was better balanced than in previous years, and their quality of play certainly improved because of it. Bezemer ' s shooting and rebounding left little to be desired. Big Bob Schuder ' s steady game often gave Chick a much-needed rest, (ark Rubles ' bullet-like jump shots from all over the court branded him a threat inside or out, while Gary Gabbard ' s classy dribbling and playmaking, Boyd Coffie ' s driving lay-ups. and Lee Martin- dale ' s sound play gave Rollins a formidable guard combination. Several freshmen added to this year ' s squad included Dick Bishop, Bob Griffith, Jerry Beets, John Ladakakos, Jim Brown and Claude Crook. Of these, Dick Bishop and Bob Griffith were men to be watched in coming years. Bishop ' s wide variety ol shots and court savvy earned him a starting birth from the very beginning. His scoring touch rated second only to Bezemer ' s. Griffith ' s cool head and outside set shots decided the outcome oi several games. The 1957-58 Tars played a 24-game schedule. 12 oi them being Florida Intercollegiate Basketball Conference games. The season started with Florida Southern on December 2nd and wound up with traditional rival Stetson on February 18th. From the tip-off to the final buzzer, it was exciting. The upset over powerful Miami . . . that 80% shooting average in the first quarter against the University of Florida . . . Chick ' s 33 points against Mercer . . . yes, a season to be remembered. THE FREE THROW! On tip-toes. Tar guard Boyd Coffie keeps his eye on the bucket as the ball softly arches into the air. Rollins ' forward, Jack Ruggles, is seen standing in the background. 133 HMMM. The Varsity suffered four defeats in pre- season races against Syracuse, Wisconsin, Fordham and Florida Southern. Getting back on their feet, the Varsity strove to regain their honorable position in small college competition. Working hard under the watchful eye of Coach Brad Bradley, the Varsity began to click together. The arrival of spring and warm weather found Rollins meeting Amherst, Boston U., A.FC. and Tampa on Lake Maitland. The results of these races encour- aged the crew as they entered the State Championship and Dad Vail Regattas. The Junior Varsity also started slowly with an open-loss to Florida Southern. After juggling positions, Coach Bradley found a combination that developed into a cr ew capable of maintaining the reputation oi former J.V. ' s. •READY ALL? ROW! Starting Baseball Week early in March, the Tars again played sonic of the toughest teams in the East. Superstitious Joe ' s IkiII club boasted several new freshman players who won starting berths from the very beginning. Included in these were: Ronnie Brown, SS; Mike Cortese, 2nd Base; Jerry Beets and Tony Toledo, Outfield. The Tars pitching seemed to be the strongest point, but the batting was erratic and the defense just so-so. This ineptness at the plate cost the Tars several games eai ly in the season, but showed signs of improvement as the season neared the hall-way mark. Probably the finest pitching oi the year came from senior Harry Bennett. Harry ' s line assortment ol pitc hes baffled many opposing teams and contributed to many Tar victories. Catcher Boyd CofBe, 1st Baseman Jim Johnston, 3rd Baseman Jack Gau- dette and Outfieldei Frank Willis, all lettermen, continued their line team pla and deserve much credit for their work. Summing it all up, it looked like a rebuilding yeai for Rollins and the future looks very bright. RIGHT: Ronnie, Mabrey, Jerry and Bunky look over the other team as Rollins goes to bat. ONE The varsity team, once again coached by the ever-popular Norm Copeland, is looking forward to another winning season. With the possible exception of Miami. Princeton and Presbyterian, the Tars should win the remainder of their matches. Returning letterman Jose Ochoa, Dave Hewitson and Phil Lubetkin figure to give the Tars a strong combination. Round- ing out the first six are two exceptional freshman players who show tremendous promise for the future — John Henriksen and Luis Dominguez, and Steve Mandel who played in many of the more important matches last year. Many of the other boys on the tennis ladder who figure to make it rough for the first six are Burnam MacLeod. Tom Glymph, Hugh Mitchell, Bill Moulton and Jim Davis. Some of the tougher matches that have yet to be played are Presbyterian. Georgia Tech and Mich- igan State. With an eye towards the future, the Rollins tennis picture is certainly an optimistic one with two freshmen, two sophomores and one junior in the first six. The varsity girls tennis team, coached by Norm Copeland, has probably the best women ' s tennis players ever assembled together in one college. The team is led by Owen McHaney, nationally ranked girl player from Little Rock, Arkansas. Owen is in her second year of competition at Rollins and so far has completely dominated the Tars tennis picture. Playing in the second singles position is Judy Hagan from Ohio who teams with Owen in the doubles. Jane Feise plays in the number three position and gives both Owen and Judy many tough matches. Joan O ' Brien, Can- ada ' s Junior Champion, plays number four with Ginger Carpen- ter and Lynn Egry rounding out the first six. This team has often been touted by Coach Copeland, as well as many other tennis observers, to be the most well-balanced women ' s team in the country. So far this season, the girls have played Miami twice and the Tampa Women ' s Club, emerging from these matches in victorious fashion. Winning Season The 1957-58 version of the Rollins Golf team gives al indications of being one of the finest golf teams in tin country. As of this writing, Coach Nymiciz ' s Tars have played twe matches, winning both of them by decisive scores. They de feated the University of Wisconsin twice, 27-3 and 25-5. The Tars have all of their lettermen back as well a: two promising freshmen. The returning golfers who figun to keep Rollins up in the limelight are Jim Curti, Jot Miller, Bob Craig, Bob Ross, Dick Diversi, and Ron Ter pak. The two freshmen who will be trying to break intt the lineup are Bob Harrison and Jay Dolan. Coach Nymici; can also call on Les Sladkus and Bob Learner in man} (if the matches.
