1956 TOMOKAN The 1 956 EDITORIAL BOARD Jo Coyll Kathy Schwarz Larry Hitner Paul Ackerman T M K A N presents Steps of Rollins e (I i c a ti This record in words and pictures is dedicated to Lyman Huntington. Without the dapper head of the Rollins Photographic Department there would he no TOMOKAN worthy of your interest. This little man with the ever-present camera, quiet manner and bright bow tie hasn ' t restricted his efforts to the TOMOKAN. Every campus publication owes a debt to Lyman Huntington. And so do many students and alumni. Graduates of the Huntington School of Art —pho- tography is a fine art to Lyman— have gone on to jobs with national publications. Others are still learning their art with an eye to the future. Still more are being taught a hobby they will always enjoy. Lyman ' s studios have expanded from a dismal hole in the wall in Carnegie Hall to the present office and darkrooms in the Student Center. As the campus became aware of the opportunities. Lyman ' s work load jumped. Last year he began classes in photograph) ' . Despite long experience Lyman has the trademark of a true artist— he is still learning the business. And Rollins students are learning right along with him. But this easy-going cameraman— who holds a pilot ' s license and repairs television sets as a sideline— means more to Rollins students than just another instructor. He is father confessor to publications. He is a willing listener and clearing house for campus gripes and campus jokes. He leans back and smiles as stu- dents pour out their triumphs and their failures. To those who know him Lyman is even more. He is just a wonderful guy. For it is here that an attempt is made to fit the student with the vocation of his choice. Under the direc- tion of Melvin Greenhut, students apply for and are granted employment with firms both in Winter Park and throughout the United States. Perhaps the busiest time of the year occurs right before the graduation rush when senior students keep Greenhut and his staff really busy as they seek job opportunities toward their begin- ning in the modern business world. The government of the association is vested in the Rollins Student Council which meets weekly and works for the best interests of the students, both in the management of student activities and the promotion of law and order in the college. This year Denny Folken presided over the Council which consists of one representa- tive from each social group and four independent representatives. Six outstanding Rollins seniors were nominated to appear in the 1956 edition of Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Those selected on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, service, and future promise are Chuck Weisman, Mary Enck, Shirley Miller, Denny Folken, Sue Dunn and Alison Dessau. The spirit that had been exhibited at the Orlando airport pep rally waned considerably after Rollins lost its first four outings to Bradley, Florida State, Florida, and Florida Southern, but then Rollins won a home game against West- ern Carolina and basketball spirit took a new rise. It was a short lived rise though as the Big Blue lost their next four games. After this series of defeats Old Mister Spirit played the Phoenix no more and Rollins ended the season with a 4-20 win and loss record. Despite this demoralizing season, Rollins managed to capture three high honors: Chick Bezemer, Rollins ' sopho- more center-forward, gained berths on the Florida All- State team, the F.I. B.C. team, and the All-Opponent team of Georgia State Teachers College. Next season Bezemer will wield a big stick in Rollins ' fight for a place in the basketball sun. ALL-STATE Chick Bezemer pushes a shot in an endeavor against State Title to Varsity and J.V. Coach Bradley started this season with a weakened varsity and the most powerful J.V. crew ever seen on Lake Maitland. Alter the opening loss to Wisconsin the varsity travelled to Lakeland for a triangle race in opposition with Florida Southern College and Tampa University. Losing both these races was indicative that changes must be made, and Doc Bradley began playing musical chairs shifting combina- tions sev eral times to gain a strong middle in the shell. The results of this strategem were evident as Rollins raced to a two length victory over La Salle in their next outing. The following four races were easy glides to victory over Amherst, Ameri- can International, Tampa, and Florida Southern, revenging an earlier defeat at the latter ' s hands. The final test before the big Dad Vail Regatta at Philadelphia was the State Championship race against Southern and Tampa. In near ninety degree heat Tampa spurted ahead at the start to take the lead on Rollins by a seat. A little before the half, Rollins was still a seat behind, but increasing the stroke from thirty to thirty-four for thirty strokes Rollins forged ahead and remained there to win by two lengths. The Dad Vail Regatta was the same old story for Rollins, a second place finish, this time to La Salle ' s highly rated small college crew. The La Salle Philadelphians pulled to a half-length lead to finish in 6:59.3 for the Henley distance of a mile and five-sixteenths after finishing second to Rollins in a preliminary heat. The half length margin of defeat was considerably more than last year ' s six inch loss to Dartmouth. The varsity completed the season with six wins, two seconds, and one loss, recording a creditable year ' s racing, but the bright spot of the season proved to be the J.V. shell. Competing in eight races, the J.V. won them all, garnering the State Championship and a first place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta which won for Rollins the new Rusty Callow Trophy named for the present Navy Coach. Rollins finished a length ahead in the time of 7:23.5 AF1ER PULLING to a hard fought win, jubilant Rollins crewmen give Coxswain Joey Dallanegra his just rewards. After losing their first match to a highly touted Presbyterian team, the Rollins netters went on to win seven of their next eight contests. The lone loss during this time was to the Uni- versity of Miami, undoubtedly the number one team in the nation. Young tennis coach Norm Copeland started his first season at Rollins with only four fully experienced players, Garcia, Long- shore, Filosof, and Antonetti; it was the acquisition of Ben Sobieraj, Navy veteran and ultimate number one player, that assured Rollins of a winning season. The new combination of Copeland and Sobieraj will help considerably in Rollins future bids for clay court acclaim. FLORIDA STATE 9 NICK VAKCHO WAITS FOR THROW IN ATTEMPT TO FORCE SLIDING OHIO STAT I Rollins started the season with its annual Baseball Week, this year extended to two weeks and eleven games. The accelerated pace of playing almost every day for two weeks made the lack of experienced pitching a painful reality, and this condition plagued the team throughout the remainder of the twenty-eight game schedule. Baseball Week saw six invited out of state teams dis- playing their wares at Harper-Shepherd field, and Rollins emerged from this baseball extravaganza winning six and losing five contests. In state play Rollins lost only two games, one to Florida State University, and tin- other, an unexpected loss to Florida Southern. Rollins avenged both these losses in future meetings. Highlights of the season included stopping the victory string of the University of Florida, this year ' s Southeast- ern Conference champions, at ten games, and the home run hitting of senior Jim Doran. Another highlight was the pitching of right-handed fast bailer Hal Lawler who posted a 9-0 record while pitching against the toughest competition on the schedule. Lawler ' s pitching per- formance should gain him a spot on the All State team along with Nick Vancho, the leading Tars batsman. Jack Powell, slender left hander, proved to be a pleasant surprise as he notched a 4-1 record to assist Rollins to the state title. Harry Bennett, the Tar ' s third starting pitcher, ended the season with a 5-4 record. Only two seniors were billeted on this season ' s starting nine; shortstop Nick Vancho and left fielder Jim Doran. The remainder of the team was composed mostly of sophomores and freshmen. With these holdovers, the acquisition of another starting pitcher should put Rollins in contention for national recognition. Between rain storms the girls competed for the intramural baseball trophy. Memorable was the first game of the season between Alpha Phi and Theta. The tennis trophy was also cap- tured in the winter term. Leigh Hay and Anita Wadsworth were outstanding as they battled for their group across the net. Spring term brought a bevy of intramural sports for the girls. Volleyball to pped the ladder while swimming and archery fol- lowed. Marlene Stewart upheld her outstanding record on the links, while swimming to victory were Dyan Wilson, Betty Brook, and Susu Dunn.
