For his outstanding part as a guid- ing factor in the contemporary his- tory of Rollins College and for his unselfish devotion of time and en- ergy to the perpetuation of the Rol- lins ideal, we dedicate this, the 1952 Tomokan, to our beloved President, Hugh F. McKean. HUGH F. McKEAN President of the College 13 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Rebecca Coleman Wilson, Thomas P. Johnson, Robert W. Stephens, L. Corrin Strong, Louis W. WINTHROP BANCROFT Chairman of the Board HALSTEAD W. CALDWELL Secretary HUGH F. McKEAN President ALFRED J. HANNA First Vice President JOHN M. TIEDTKE Second Vice President and Treasurer FREDERIC H. WARD Assistant Treasurer and Comptroller When Rollins College was founded in 1885, the State of Florida granted a charter which provided that the policies of the school be enacted by a board of trustees, numbering not more than twenty-one nor less than nineteen. Thus, the powers of the trustees are provided by law. Their duties are to appoint all faculty and administrative positions, to handle the en- dowments and investments of the college and to ac- quire property. Many of their powers are delegated to the Presi- dent, some to the faculty, and certain powers to the student body through the Student Association. Two regular meetings are held each year, one dur- ing Founder ' s Week and another in Commencement Week; but special meetings are called if necessary. During the rest of the year an executive committee handles the routine business of the college. Each member serves a three year term. The board every year asks the Alumni Association to name one alumnus to serve for one term. At the present, ten of the twenty trustees are alumni of Rollins College. 14 JOHN M. RESIDENT HEADS Of all the staff the resident head has the closest contact with the students. Versatility is a must, for she is both a friend and advisor to the residents as well as a gracious hostess for the house. Her tasks range from bandaging cuts to administering mild disciplinary action. For her understanding, patience, and forebearance we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude, a debt which is impossible to express in words alone; yet the Tomokan, on behalf of the stu- dent body would like to offer our sincere thanks to these modest queens of the campus. 26 TREASURER ' S OFFICE Alice Peel, Warren Averill, John Tiedrke, Frederic H. During the summer President Ed Cushing was called to serve his country, and Hal Suit was elected to succeed him. Various committees set up within the Student Council this year include a committee of three to rewrite the Student Association Constitution whose members were Derek Dunn- Rankin, Dick Elliott, and Hester Davis. Also created was a Speaker Service of students who visit civic clubs in Central Florida explaining the small college ' s role in the community and democracy. Other activities have been: the news briefings which proved quite successful, the wel- come extended to Patrick and Sanford Air Force Bases in November to acquaint them with the college; the Faculty-rating sheet put into effect at the end of the Fall Term in which the students graded their professors; the $2,750 appropriation from the Student Council Association Fund to help the administration in the building of new tennis courts, volleyball courts, and Pelican improvements; and finally, the plans for a political forum to be held at Rollins in April which was set up by Hal Suit and a committee. 125 CHAPEL ACTIVITIES The prime function of the chapel on campus is as a non-secretarian spiritual center for the student body, but it also engages in many outside activities through the various com- mittees and affiliated organizations. The Choir, International Relations Club, Race Rela- tions Committee, Community Service Committee, Ushers and the After Chapel Club are sponsored by the Chapel and are open to all students. These organizations not only ac- quaint the student with problems in the field but also encourage positive work within the community and on campus. CHAPEL STAFF By planning and executing specific programs and projects the Chapel Staff executes the religious program on the campus. The Staff functions through three service and study committees of the Chapel: Community Service, International Relations, and Race Relations. The Chapel Fund Drive, sponsored by the Staff, raises money for the three committee men- tioned above and the Dean ' s Fund. The following is an example of the Staff ' s programs: Christmas Service, a Christmas Program in which Dean Enyart gives his annual reading of Dicken ' s Christmas Carol, Lenten Services, and a sunrise Easter Service. The staff is composed of seventeen members — two faculty members, nine elected mem- bers, three committee heads, the head usher, chairman of the choir, and Dean of the Chapel. 126 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS The International Relations Club has as its prime purpose informing the student of world affairs. This is accomplished by lectures, movies, debates and discussions. Dean Cleve- land spoke on her recent trip to Japan and Madame Huang informed us of her native land — China. A very interesting debate on The Rearmament of Western Germany was presented by Herr Fisher, Dr. France, Jerry O ' Brien and Bob Yoder. Movies were shown by Mary Ann Hobart, concerning her trip to England and France last summer and Jack Rich sometimes shows pictures concerning Students Traveling Abroad. In addition, the IRC supports two war or- phans, a Greek girl and a Polish boy. Christ- mas presents are sent to them each year, as well as monthly packages. The club also con- tributes to the World Student Service Fund which helps foreign students complete their education by providing monetary and other means. First row: J. Clark, J. Wiselogel, J. The money raised by the campus and road performances of the show built the present experimental theater at the corner of Fair- banks and Chase. THE ROLLINS PLAYERS The Rollins Players is an organiza- tion whose members are required tc have a specific amount of theater arts credits, and have done a considerable amount of theater work. BASKET ALL Coach Joe Justice and the starting five: Frank Barker, Bob MacHardy, Bob Rego, Con- nie Mack Butler and Ev Williams. With the addition of seven freshmen to bol- ster the four returning lettermen; Frank Barker, Ev Williams, Jim Fay and Dick Seyler, the Rol- lins Tars, as the season opened, were a team to be reckoned with. Joe Justice in his first year as head coach produced a team featuring a fast break offense which was more dangerous in the last quarter than in the first. This year also brought to Rollins in the per- son of 6 ' 4 center Frank Barker, four NCAB records. Most free throws in one game, 17 against Stetson; most field goals in one game, 20 against Florida Southern; most consecutive free throws, 21; and most points in one game, 50 against Green Cove Navy. Barker also ranked sixth in the nation ' s small college players with a 23.1 points per game average. The Rollins Tars opened their 1951-52 se a- son with a convincing victory over Patrick Air Force Base 71-39. In rolling up their second victory over a weak Florida Southern team, the Tars definitely established themselves as the dark-horse in the Florida state title race. The game also established a new team scoring rec- ord as they rolled through to the tune of 87-47. After taking Jacksonville Navy in their stride the Tars came to their first real test of the sea- son. In by far the most exciting game of the season, Rollins went down to their first defeat of the year, bowing to Tampa in the last seconds 67-65. The team came from a 61-43 deficit early in the final quarter to draw within 2 points of the Spartans. Tampa then gained possession and froze the ball for the final 17 seconds of play. A small fast five from Mercer came down to hand Rollins its second defeat. Again the margin was a meager 2 points, 61-59. The Tars were handed even more disheartening news as Barker was lost for at least a week due to an eye injury suffered in the second quarter. Frank did not re-enter the lineup until the Stetson game of Jan. 26. Still hampered by this loss, Rollins was completely outclassed by a more ex- perienced Parris Island Marine Team four days later, playing an excellent game in losing by a score of 69-60. The team then prepared for the season ' s most rugged road test, games with Tampa, Stetson, and FSU Still without the services of Barker the team went down to defeat at the hands of a very tall and efficient Tampa U. team, 83-71. Returning to its usual close margins of defeat or victory the Tars went to Deland and before a packed house they went down to defeat by a three point margin, 72-69. The Tars ended a six game losing streak by downing a troublesome FSU team 69-55. This game was a revenge for an upset defeat by the Seminoles a week before. Rollins sank 23 out Continued on Page 150 Ev drops in another, but still not enough to win. Seyler watches while Rego rebounds. 59 to 59, seconds left, Mercer scrambled and wort. Up goes MacHardy but down goes Rollins 69 to 60. 149 of 28 shots for a fair margin of victory. If this average had followed for the previous games the Tars might have won some of their closely contested defeats. Four days later Rollins played host to a visiting Stetson five which had defeated them once earlier; this time going down before a closely con- tested 70-68 final score. Appearing in his last home game Frank Barker scored 50 points in a rout of a sadly mismatched team from Green Cove Navy. In the final quarter Frank scored half of his total when the team did everything but hand him the ball in an effort to break the previous rec- ord set by Chadroff a few nights before. When the slaughter was over, the dust had cleared, Rollins had won by a lop-sided score of 104- 55. This years team has been named the Heart- break Five. Going great before Christmas va- cation, the team seemed to fall apart after the long lay-off. Poor shooting characterized all their games during the next month. Slop- py ballhandling and fair defensive work con- tributed along with an odd inability to sink free throws to the loss of many games. It was often said that when Rollins was hot they could not be stopped, especially in the last quarter, but when they were cold there was a lid on the basket and oil on their fingers. Frank wins this jump by a finger tip. MacHardy breaks through for 10. Brantley goes up for a jump against Mercer. BASE ALL Having had a three year hold on the state champ- ionship up until last year ' s slip downward, Rollins will be back in the scramble this year with a team improved in every department. Coach Joe Justice has done a terrific job in rounding up new talent for this season ' s team and it can be well assured that much of the team ' s improvement is going to be based on the success of these newcomers Fifteen new men, fourteen freshmen, dot the Rollins roster this year, and many won starting berths for the opening game with Alabama on March 17. Pitching is Justice ' s main worry this year, just as it was last year after the graduation of such fine moundsmen as John Gray, and Clyde Stevens in 1950. Coach Justice says that our pitching staff is better than it was last year, but that it still lacks experience. Last season ' s entire freshman pitching staff is back, improved after a year of college baseball Returning are Henry Menendez, last year ' s leading hurler with a 4-2 record; Don Work, a senior who chalked up a 3-3 mark before coming down with a bad back in April; Bob Leader and Bud Fischer, who are looking much better this year; Fred Baldwin, a fine reliefer who won 3 and lost 5 last year; and big Peter Sturte- vant, the only Bohemian ball player with artistic tal- ents and a perfect record of 1 win and no losses. Bol- stering these returnees are three highly promising freshmen; Bill Cary, who had a 16-4 record at West- Continued on Page 152 AL CHUBB DON WORK BUD FISCHER LYLE CHAMBERS (A f J JOE HULL 4 151 -ay 7 Rollins versus North Carolina at Harper-Sheppard field. There is no question in the hitting department this year. On the regular squad are four-year veteran Lyle Chambers, center fielder who hit .330 and batted in 25 runs in 24 games; Al Daynor, a hard hitting right fielder transferred from Bradley; Connie Mack Butler, an all-North Carolina high school left fielder last season; Bob MacHardy, the freshman basketball whiz from Westbrook, Maine; Freddy Talbot, fine fielding second baseman from Somerville, Mass.; Don Finnigan, hard hitting catcher; and Joe Hull, 215 pound first baseman and slugger. There is no doubt that if all these potential hitters come through with the goods this season that last year ' s lowly average of .230 will be raised considerably. DON FINNIGAN In the infield there will be some fine team work done by MacHardy and Talbot, shortstop and second baseman respectively. They provide the Rollins Tars with a good double play combination. Talbot being as smooth as they come on the pivot. Versatile Del- ton Helms is handling third base nicely after spend- ing last year at first and in the outfield, and if any of these three fail to come through then Bill Pate, the regular second baseman of last year who is a very good fielder, can step in. All in all, Rollins has an excellent squad of ball- players for the season of 1952. Coach Justice has been working them hard in hopes that the Tars can once again retain that title of State Champions. Their schedule is a tough one, but with a little luck on their side they can do it. Besides such state powerhouses as Florida and Miami, Rollins also meets Alabama, North Carolina, and Amherst. These ball clubs are a threat to any team ' s record. Those people who come to watch Rollins play ball at Harper-Sheppard Field can be assured of some very hot and fast games this season. The boys are not only good, but they really want to play ball, and that means a lot. Robinson throws to Hull, but too late. FRED TALBOT Games played to date. CREW When the varsity crew went down the waves on Lake Maitland this year, there were only four surviving lettermen. Graduation and ill- less had taken their toll of the Big Blue ' s Crew. Most significant loss was that of stroke John Thibodeau to the Navy. With the aid of letterman Dave Manley at number 7, John Vereen at number 5, Russ Sturgis at number 6, and Emory Hunter at number 1, Coach Bradley began to mold his crew. Buck Class came into number 2, and Ronny Trumbull at number 3. The crew didn ' t reach its full com- plement until the beginning of the Winter Quarter with the addition of Norm Gross at number 4, and Don Weber at the all import- ant stroke position. Ralph Estes very ably filled the coxswain ' s seat. The varsity crew this year is one of the largest in the history of rowing at Rollins, the average weight being 191 pounds. The varsity won their second race by defeating powerful Bos- ton University by a quarter of a length in a hard-fought race. The two most important races this year are the State Championship Regatta at Lakeland, Florida, and the Dad Vail Regatta at Boston. The race at Boston is the Rose Bowl of the small crews. The competition at this race will be keen, for schools such as Dartmouth, Am- herst and Boston are entered. But, this year Brad ' s boys have a good chance of bringing home a victory. Some really top collegiate squads have been added to last year ' s JIM McDOUGALL schedule which in itself was not easy. Something else providing a great deal of interest and excitement is the long mid-western trip, starting April 10 with a match at Michigan University. Never before has a Rollins team of any sort taken such a lengthy road trip and been opposed by so many pow- erful, major Universities. Other squads due to cause trouble for Rollins netmen on this journey are Cin- cinnati, Indiana, and Princeton Universities. Look, maw, one hand! ' Battling it out for the top spot in the final team positions are Alfredo Millet and Calhoun Dickson. Jim Wesley and Alberto Danel are scrapping for the number three position; and the remaining spots will be filled by Paul Binner and Ed Scheer. Girls tennis is not what it should be here at Rol- lins, that is, it is unfortunate that a school with so many fine young women tennis players can ' t sched- ule a season of inter-collegiate contests. Rol lins will be facing such teams as Davidson, Duke, am the Citadel in home matches at Dubsdread Countr Club, and then the squad goes on the road in a tou taking in Georgia, Clemson, Presbyterian and David son. Clyde Kelly, Rollins golf coach, has four letter men returning from last year ' s team, which won si: out of eight tournaments on its schedule. I V I It A l I It I S The purpose of the intramural program at Rollins is to provide competition and recreation for every stu- dent in those sports which he likes best; to promote interest and social attitudes. The groups involved in intramural competition are the fraternities and sorori- ties and both men ' s and women ' s Independent groups. The body governing these groups is the Intramural Board which consists of one representative from each Which way did he go says Baldwin — KA ' s vs. Lambda Chi. group. This board takes care of all problems pertain- ing to intramural sports such as rules, referees, and trophies, etc. Suitable awards are given in all intra- mural sports and the Intramural Cup is awarded to the competing group securing the greatest number of points during the year. In men ' s intramurals, once again this year ' s race for the Clark Trophy is dominated by the X Club, who have won four out of the six sports played to date: football, basketball, tennis, and volleyball. In One of the competing teams in girls ' volleyball. 164 Jeanne Washburn sinks one for Gamma Phi football the Gale Hall boys won, but they were hard pressed by a much improved Independent team, which eventually had to settle for a second place. In golf the KA ' s came through with a win with Dave Shelly being the strong factor of the team. Bruce Remsburg, now in X Club, won the golf trophy, giving the Inde- pendents enough points for a second place. Tennis was another sport that went the way of X Club with John deCarville winning the singles. The Delta Chi ' s got points for a second place when Bruce Lee and Bud Morrison won the doubles matches. In girls ' intramurals the Theta ' s seem to be ahead at this time, having won softball and taken seconds in the remain- ing three sports played to date, basketball, golf, and tennis. The Kappa ' s have won both golf and tennis, having in their group some of the finest athletes in both activities. Bonnie Edwards, Jerry Faulkner, and Marilyn Shinton are all fine tennis players, while Barb Bremmerman and Donna Knox play excellent golf. Basketball was won by the Independents with the Theta ' s running a close second. Now there are still four more sports left for competition — volleyball, swimming, archery, and the horse show. If either the Theta ' s or the Kappa ' s win the majority of these sports, they will undoubt- edly become Intramural Champs. I s purpose not only is to govern all interf raternity relations, but also to try and promote good will among the organizations, to preserve the ideals of Rollins Col- lege, and to sponsor the mutual interests of all the fraternities on this campus. 173 A L V II A l II I Who wants a ride to school . . . yeah, I ' m going to the Center . . .
