But there is a specially one who has shown us, through his unequaled enthusiasm, the direction in which we are driving. We have felt his personal interest in each one of us — our desires, our growth, and our happiness. To you, Dean Darrah, with admiration and pride, we dedicate the 1951 TOMOKAN. 12 administration . . . 15 staff 16 admissions office student- dean ' s office Jack Rich has a big job as Adm issions Director, but he is always helped Mrs. Waite and Miss Fairchild are always kept busy coordinating and by his very capable staff. assisting in the planning of many student and college affairs library staff With the completion of the new library, the work of the library staff will be much pleasanter, but in the meantime they are carrying on |ust as efficiently as ever. Not pictured: Jerry Griggs cheerleaders 147 basketball . . . This year ' s basketball team was one that all connected with Rollins could be proud of. They started to click at the first of the season and continued to do so throughout. They won eleven games and lost ten, but played the kind of ball which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats at all times. The team was led by three former teammates at Jacksonville Junior College: Frank Barker, Everette Williams, and Dick Seyler. The first string was rounded out by the Fay brothers, Jim and Pete. A semi-pro team from Daytona provided the opposition in the first two games, and the Rollins squad won easily, 62-58 and 64-58. The first collegiate team we faced was the Miami Hurricanes. They came to Orlando with the reputation of being the finest team in Florida and one of the best in the South. Rollins was completely outclassed in the first half and fell behind, 34-23, but the second half proved to be a different story, and the Tars slowly pulled within striking distance. Just as the buzzer sounded to end the game, Pete Fay dropped in a two-pointer for a 59-58 win. This proved to be the biggest upset in the Florida basketball season. The next two games were played against the Patrick Henry Air Base, who lost, and the Paris Island Marines, to whom we dropped a hard-fought decision 65-60. However, this was about the finest team we met all season. After Christmas the team lost to Stetson, 74-58, and then faced the Miami Hurricanes again, who wanted revenge and got it from the Tars, 76-54. Following these two defeats, the McDowell men had a five-game winning streak against the Milians of Tampa, Green Cove, Navy, Stetson, and Florida Southern, This victory march was snapped by Tampa, 105-74, which proved to be the most points ever scored by two teams in a game in the history of Florida basket- ball. The next game again saw the Tars defeated in a close battle jack Mcdowell Coach by Mercer, 59-57. After losing to Stetson and Florida State, Rollins met Erskine to romp to an 80-56 win, only to be met next by our third defeat at the hands of the Stetson Hatters. Next Rollins closed out Florida Southern, 59-57, in their second meeting on a field goal by Bill Ross. Tampa then came to Orlando to swamp the Tars with a 65-55 defeat, in the final game of the season, Florida State came from behind at the half to walk away with the game, 62-45. On the whole it was a pretty successful season and means that we should encourage Rollins to stress basketball even more. Frank Barker proved to be the finest player on the Rollins team and he led the team and the state in scoring for some time. However, the excellent help he received from the rest of the squad deserves high praise, too. It was a fine season. 148 schedule December Patrick Air Force Base January 23 Tampa December 7 Miami January 26 Mercer December 13 Parris Island Marines January 30 Stetson January 8 Stetson February 1 Florida State U January 10 Miami February 7 Erskine January 13 Milian ' s of Tampa February 10 Stetson January 15 Green Cove Navy February 14 Florida Southern January 17 Milian ' s of Tampa February 17 Tampa January 20 Stetson February 23 Florida St ate U. Bal- let stunts such as kips, swirls, porpoises, dolphins, and water wheels are demonstrated in formations by from two to ten girls. Throughout the year the club presents water shows at the Orange Court Hotel in Orlando, Sanlando Springs, the Sheraton Plaza Hotel in Daytona, Cypress Gardens, and at the Mayfair Inn in Sanford. Interest in water skiing at Rollins has developed tremendously in the past few years and during the last three years the Rollins team has participated in the Inter-Collegiate Tournament held at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven. Rollins men and women have each won twice and if they win again this year they will be able to keep the trophy. This year we should have the best team that we have ever had as may more students are interested in the ski team and want to be on it; besides the fact that Dick Pope is still the most outstanding member of the team. Since 1948 Dick has been the National Water Skiing Champion and this year became the World Champion. tennis.. Last year saw the end of the tennis team ' s winning streak, when they lost two of their matches to Miami University while winning nine. Ricaido Balbiers was the outstanding member of the team and while par- ticipating in the National Intercollegiate Champion- ship, he reached the finals Rollins finished third in the final standings. The girl ' s team, although playing no collegiate matches, did do well for themselves in the various tournaments around Florida. Their most outstanding player was Doris Jensen, who won the Florida State crown here in Orlando. The team this year has all the old stars returning along with outstanding addi- tion of Elaine Lawicki, who |ust recently this year captured the Florida State Crown from Doris. Much is expected of this team in tournament play this season. The men ' s team lost Ricardo Balbiers, who lost only one match during his collegiate career, through graduation, and Norman Copeland in the same wav But the team is still expected to be as strong as last year ' s because of the presence of Alfredo Millet, a very fine player from Mexico, and the addition of more material in the lower positions on the team Tom Molloy will be expected to fill the number one spot, and Calhoun Dickson, Jim Wesley Paul Binner, Buzz Benson, and Ed Scheer along with Millet will round out the team JIM McDOUGALL Coach schedule MARCH 22— PRESBYTERIAN Home MARCH 24— FLORIDA STATE Home MARCH 27— DUKE Home MARCH 28— LOYOLA (New Orleans) Home APRIL 4 —MIAMI Coral Gables APRIL 7 —FLORIDA Home APRIL 17— FLORIDA SOUTHERN Lakeland APRIL 21— MIAMI Home APRIL 24— FLORIDA Gainesville APRIL 28— FLORIDA SOUTHERN — Home 154 girl ' s ream Doris Jensen. 1 55 CALHOUN DICKSON ALFREDO MILLET baseball Since the 1951 version of the Rollins Tars base- ball team is still wrapped in its preliminary stage, it is difficult to judge their potentiality at present. A great deal of work remains to be done, and several positions need to be filled; positions which were left vacant by the departure of such men as Harry Han- cock, Buddy McBride, John Gray, Clyde Stevens and others. Some of the newcomers who will fill the vacant posts are Frank Barker, Fred Baldwin, Bud Fisher, Al Chubb, and Bob Leader. This year ' s team has a fine record to uphold, for Rollins has captured the state crown for three years in a row. Coach Joe Justice has hopes, naturally, of making it four straight. Besides such state powerhouses as Florida and Miami, we also meet Alabama, one of the best teams in the Southeast, and North Carolina, a power in the Southern Conference. John Thiebadeau, returning letterman, ably held down the stroke position for the Tars, and Don Jones filled the seven seat. Don Brinegar, beginning his fourth varsity crew year, pulled a mighty six oar, while John Vereen, a newcomer to crew and the varsity shell, rowed five. Max Grulke rowed four this year, and three posi- tion was handled by Bill Gordon until he graduated in March, then Charlie Knecht returned after a year ' s layoff with a separated shoulder. The two position on the varsity has been divided among Scotty Witherall, George Johnson and Russ Sturges. Ed Motch, three-year crewman, filled the remaining starboard position as he rowed one in the big blue varsity for the 1951 crew season. Frank Stockton was varsity cox. Coach Bradley gave the nod to the ' 50 crew as being the most satisfying to coach as they developed from being second in the State Championship to beat both Tampa and Florida Southern and be second only to Boston University, for the fourth straight year in the Dad Vail Regatta. The team, composed of Clyde Kelly, Billy Key, Jupe Arnold, and Jimmy Brass, compiled an impressive record of ten wins, two losses, and one tie. But the most outstanding accomplishment of the team was their winning of the Florida Intercollegiate Cham- pionships from the heavily favored Miami team. This was done by the narrow margin of one stroke. The men ' s team wound up their season by playing in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at Athens, Georgia. Here they made a fine showing, but were not able to win. The girl ' s golf team won many honors for Rollins last year. This was done mainly through the efforts of Betty Rowland, who won the Women ' s National Intercollegiate Championship from Grace Lynzck of Stetson University. Betty is back at Rollins again this year and great things are expected from her. This year ' s golf team is greatly weakened with the loss of three of its top four men. Clyde Kelly turned pro, Jupe Arnold graduated last June, and Jimmy Brass has left school. Billy Key will play in the number one post but as yet the other spots have not definitely been decided upon. Larry Bently, who let- tered last year, will undoubtedly take over one of the positions, and much is expected of newcomer Al Peterson. The girl ' s team appears stronger this year with the addition of Allee Chatham, Barbara Bremerman, and Marilyn, who are all Freshmen. 164 First row: Morilyn Klumb, Allee Chatham, Betty Rowland. Suitable tro- phies and individual medals are awarded in all intra- mural sports and the Intramural Cup is awarded to the competing group securing the greatest number of intramural points during the year in men ' s intramurals, this year ' s race for the Clark Trophy is once again dominated by the X-Club, who have won both the footboll and basketball so far. In football the X-Clubbers won, but they were hard pressed by the Sigma Nu ' s. These two games be- tween the two clubs were the best seen in the Sand- spur Bowl in some time. The Lambda Chi ' s finished third with the Independents taking fourth place. In golf and tennis the Independents made a clean sweep with the Sigma Nu ' s taking second in golf, closely followed by the K.A. ' s. Kappa Alpha, in a three-way playoff with the X-Club and Alpha Phi Lambda, cap- tured the second spot in tennis. The basketball sea- son turned out as something of a surprise, for the X-Club went through undefeated to win easily, but the rest of the positions were hotly contested with Lambda Chi, Sigma Nu, and Kappa Alpha finishing in that order. While the Delta Chi ' s just won (-he crew race, volleyball has just started as we go to press, while baseball and swimming is yet to come In the girl ' s intramurals, the Independents seem to be ahead at this time, having won both the basket- ball and the golf. Although the Freshmen actually won the basketball, they were ineligible to win the cup, so the Independents captured it with the Theta ' s coming in second. With such top-notch stars as Elaine Lawicki and Doris Jensen on their team, the Alpha Phi ' s won the tennis easily, with golf going to the Independents as a result of the efforts of Betty Rowland, National Women ' s Intercollegiate Golf Champion. At this time there are still four more sports left for competition, namely, volleyball, swimming, archery, and the horse show, and hoping to repeat their winning styles of last year are: the Kappa ' s in volleyball, the Independents in swimming, and the Theta ' s in both archery and horsemanship. I alpha phi VIRGINIA BROOKS President BARBARA SHEPPARD Vice-President LOIS JOHNSTON Treasurer MARY LOU MILLS Corresponding Secretary Alpha Phi was founded at Syracuse University in 1872 and has developed into a s orority of 50 chap- ters. The Beta Lambda Chapter was founded at Rollins in 1931. Down around Lakeside we find the Alpha Phi ' s have had quite an eventful year. In December, after our thirteen new pledges had been in the group for a month or so, we spoke to the weatherman about a little snow for our dance. However, we had to make paper and paint do with the result being our Snow Ball, complete with icicles and snowman. Christmas time also brought happiness to Pat Harkins, who was married, and Ginger, Paula, Merle, and Meg, who became engaged. One of our outstanding members was Dallas, who must have found time for other things besides her uke lessons what with being editor of the Flamingo and because her name appeared in Who ' s Who, on Libra ' s roll call, and on Mademoiselle ' s College Board. Alys Oglesby, our most photogenic member, mixed beauty with brains and came out on the honor roll. Our pledge class also showed their versatility when they held a French Cabaret party in the Center. While Mimi Rohn and Janie Miller were often seen pushing their beautiful black limousine around campus, Doris Jensen lost her Florida State tennis crown to her own little sister, Elaine Lawicki. Then, too, winter term again found Dorie and Sis Shute on the varsity basketball team. Early February we initiated a good percentage of our pledges and welcomed Bette De Holczer to Lake- side, while spring term found us trooping over to Daytona as usual. All in all, we have had a good year, but we will miss our seniors Ginger, Dorie, Sis, Lois, Milly, and Dallas, next year. 180 First row: Mabel Scott, Nancie Cooper, Liane Siem, Marilyn Naas, Phyllis Bretell, Nancy Hoelz, Jean Kavanaugh. The Upsilon Beta chapter was installed at Rollins on Janu- ary 6, 1931. Our chapter stands very high in scholarship on the campus, being third from the top among the various fraternal groups last year. Two of our most outstanding members are Betty Garrett and Eleanor Hummel, who are members of Phi Beta and Libra, respectively. Both Betty and Ellie are also very out- standing in theater work at the Annie Russell and Fred Stone. The Alpha Mu chapter was installed at Rollins fifty-four years later and there are now 60 national chapters throughout the United States One of our busiest members during this year has been Betsy Fletcher, who not only was active in sev- eral clubs, but also spent much of her time in the Sandspur office, where she was well occupied with her duties as Society Editor. Other outstanding girls in our group were Nancy Flavell with her horseback riding and Polly Clark with her basketball. It also has the distinction of being the first Greek- letter fraternity known among women. The Gamma Gamma chapter was installed at Rollins in 1933 and is one of the 74 national chapters in the United States and Canada. The Theta ' s started off the year well by pledging thirteen wonderful girls and proceeded from there to become active in college affairs. Hobo was specially busy as president of the Panhellenic Council, while Vol carried out the duties as president of the Junior Panhellenic Council. Another active member of our group was Lois, who had her hands pretty full with three sorority offices besides her job as editor-in- chief of the Tomokan, which was also the third con- secutive year that a Theta had held that position. Scholastically we all did very well on this score to maintain a B average for the chapter last year Sportswise, the Theta ' s captured second place in the intramural basketball race and hope to repeat last year ' s feat, this Spring, of winning the Horse Show Plaque, which was largely a result of the eques- trian abilities of Hobo. We cannot mention the word sports without bringing up the name of Ginny Apgar, our all-around athlete, who was again on the varsity basketball team, and Allee Chatham, an exceptional golfer. In addition, we must not forget Mary Clare Koltes, our Theta transfer from the University of Wis- consin, who a couple of years ago was the girl ' s ten- nis champion of the state of Wisconsin. While being busy with college activities, we still did not forget others less fortunate than ourselves, which could be seen in our philanthropies. Besides supporting the Institute of Logapedics in Wichita, Kansas, we were a foster parent to a Greek war child. CAROLYN MAASS President MARNEE NORRIS Vice-President KATHY KELLER Treasurer ANN GREENE Pledge Trainer Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded at Monmouth College on October 13, 1870, and Delta Epsilon chap- ter was installed at Rollins in 1932. There are now 76 active chapters in the United States and Canada. The Kappas are very active on campus, and with our average of B last year, placed fourth in the scho- lastic standings of the college. Last year we also won the intramural trophy, taking first or second place in every sport except tennis. Furthermore, at our recent National Convention, Delta Epsilon was awaded sec- ond place as the most improved chapter in the country. One of our most outstanding members is Marnee Norris, who is kept especially busy with her varied activities on campus. Besides participating in 16 var- sity sports, R Club, Phi Society, and Pi Gamma Mu, Marnee is president of Libra and Key Society. With these and more activities, it is not surprising that Marnee was included in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Other outstanding mem- bers are Carolyn Maass, president of the International Relations Club; Ann Greene, secretary of the senior class; and Diane Vigeant, head cheerleader and Chapel Staff secretary. Our main social event of the year was the South Seas Dance, which was given jointly with the X-Club and held at the Angebilt Hotel early in February. 188 First row: Kathie Keller, Beverly Vickerstoff, Mary Draughon, Diane Vigeant. We now have 98 chapters throughout the country. The Phi Mus are naturally well known for their scholastic ability, since we have captured first place in the scholarship race for the past three years, but we are also active in more things besides just studies as can be seen in the achievements of several of our members. Rusty Davis was kept busy as editor of the R Book, while Skook had her hands full as News Editor of the Sandspur and Publicity Chairman of the Fiesta. Besides being well known for her mu- sical ability, Jeannine was President of Phi Beta, a member of Libra, and listed in Who ' s Who in Ameri- can Colleges and Universities. Two other outstanding girls of our group were Ruth Pate, tennis star, and Norm Jean, our dance artist and member of the R Club and Libra. Although we ended up getting the Booby prize in the intramural competition, we did win our District Scholarship Cup and hope to repeat last year ' s success in capturing the Campus Sing Cup. Our big social event of the year, which took place soon after the opening of school in the Fall, was the Phi Mu Paper Moon Swing. 190 First row: Joanne Endriss, Robin Merrill, Gretchen Herpel, Jeanmne Romer, Mary Bailey, Margaret Smith, Connie Siarto. At Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, in 1867, twelve young college women met in a small room to form a woman ' s fraternity. Under the name of I. C. Sorosis the fraternity expanded to two chap- ters within one year, the second chartered at Ohio Wesleyan. Renamed Pi Beta Phi in 1888, the fra- ternity has become international, boasting of 98 chap- ters. The chapter at Rollins was chartered in Sep- tember, 1929, enveloping a local group, Sigma Phi. Fifteen of the new pledges were initiated in Feb- ruary after making their grades, and the active chap- ter scholastic average was raised to B minus this year. Past President Carolyn Alfred has maintained a high scholastic average all through school, holding first place on the scholastic chart. Besides being a good student, C.A. was tapped for Libra and selected for Chapel Staff. Other than sorority duties, she finds time for Student Council, all athletics with emphasis on water-skiing and acting in Rollins plays. Jeannie Wiselogel shares honors with C. A. in schol- arship, activities, and sports. Swimming is one of Jeannie ' s outstanding accomplishments, and she suc- cessfully represents Pi Phi as one of the fastest swim- mers in intramurals and as President of the famous Tarpon Club. Both girls are active in Community Service, and Jeannie is President of the Studio Club. The biggest social event of the year was the Planta- tion Ball given with the Kappa Alphas late in March. It climaxed winter term and began the short spring term which culminated with the graduation of these Pi Phis: Carolyn Alfred, Ann Groves, Cornelia Hall, Lita Nicholis, Mary Jane Urban, and Elsie Shaw. 192 Kneeling: Ann Groves, Elsie Shaw. The first Independent Show in 1945 served as the stimulus for reorganization of the group, which has since been especially active alongside the sorori- ties. Scholastically, we stand fifth among the social groups at present and fourth among the girl ' s groups. Last year nine of us were listed on the honor roll. We have several outstanding members worthy of special mention. First among these is our president, Ann Lewis, who serves as secretary of the Student Council and is a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Libra, and Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universi- ties. Shirley Christensen is our other Libra member, chairman of our Spring Sing, and well acclaimed for her voice recitals. In the realm of the theater, Cynthia Crawford, Jan Olson, and Betty Lou Kepler are defi- nitely outstanding. Gale Smith, member of Pi Gamma Mu and chairman of the Community Service Commit- s also quite active on the tennis court along with Elaine Bracket, number five on the tennis ladder. Joan Champion qualifies best on the archery varsity; Bobby Doerr is a titleholder at swimming, and Mary Carter is the chairman of the intramural horse show. Nine members have earned a place in Phi Beta, honor fraternity for outstanding girls in music or dramatic art. For the past two years we have captured the golf and swimming trophies, and this year added basket- ball to our list. Connected with our latest achieve- ment, we placed four girls on the varsity basketball team. The Independent Show, an all-campus production fostering intergroup goodwill, is sponsored each May by the group, running four consecutive nights in the Annie Russell. From its proceeds one or more out- standing creative arts majors receive special scholar- ships. Also, usually in April, we direct a competitive Campus Sing, awarding cups to the social men ' s and women ' s group judged most outstanding by music critics. 194 First row: Mary Carter, Edith Shulz, Ann Lewis Turley, Nicki Gould. As a result of her principles, Alpha Phi Lambda hopes to develop in her members a self-respect and courage of convic- tion which they may be proud to carry forth into later life. Having won the scholarship cup for the past three years, Alpha Phi Lambda now has permanent pos- session of the trophy. She also gained top intramural tennis honors last year. Alpha Phi Lambda sponsors the annual all-school after-Chapel breakfast, which is held in the Lyman patio the first Sunday of the school year. This fraternity is a young but growing one. Her brothers place Rollins and the betterment of the individual first and foremost in their hearts. It is the hope of this fraternity that, through the years, with the combined efforts of all the Rollins family, she may do her part to seek and find the best in all men everywhere. 196 First row: Marshall Stone, Fred Rogers, Jim Krisher. RALPH PERNICE President BUD FELIX Vice-President EMORY HUNTER Treasurer BUD MORRISON Secretory Delta Chi was founded on October 13, 1890, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and several years later, in 1941, our chapter was installed here at Rollins to boost the total number of national chap- ters to 50. Ralph Pernice, our president, has shown leader- ship and understanding in all the fraternity ' s events and possesses ability, eagerness and aggressiveness, not only in the fraternity affairs and scholastic doings, but also in his private life. Besides being on the Wel- coming Committee this year and helping Sandy out in the post office, Ralph became engaged to Becky Strickland recently, and we wish them both all kinds of good luck. Bud Felix, our Veep, has done a tremendous amount of work for the fraternity, and it has been appreciated and recognized. Besides being a Chapel Usher and an alternate on the Student Council, his endless ef- forts have proved successful, and we are grateful for them all. This St. Pete lad — no, not the one at the Pearly Gates — is an asset to the tennis team and to all that know him. Dick Elliott, another outstanding personality in our chapter, is always willing to help out any man or co-ed here, when and wherever help is needed. He is active in the Chapel Staff and Student Council, besides being president of the Speech Society and International Re- lations Club; so naturally a man we ' re proud to call a brother. We ' ll never forget his demands for a more perfect everything, his yellow sweaters, and last but not least, his Tampa Jewels. Although we are looking forward to repeating last year ' s record of winning the Campus Sing and the in- tramural crew trophy this year, at this writing we are also looking ahead to our dance this February, which we are giving with the Thetas. 198 First row: Emory Hunter, Bud Morrison, Ralph Pernice, Bud Felix. B ROBERTS Secretary CLASON KYLE Corresponding Secretory The year 1865, at Washington and Lee University, saw the foundation of the Kappa Alpha Order. This great southern fraternity was to grow until it numbers more than 74 national chapters. The Rollins chapter, Alpha Psi, was twice installed: once in 1903, and per- manently in 1927 following the completion of its Mansion, located on the beautiful and sunny shores of Lake Virginia. We are renowned in our social and athletic activi- ties around the campus, particularly in tennis ability. The varsity tennis team is made up of four outstand- ing members of our ranks, Tom Molloy, Calhoun Dickson, Alfredo Millet, who is the number one player from his native Mexico City, and Jim Wesley, the San Antonio Flash. We also have representatives in two other varsity sports, John Gray, ex-baseball pitcher for the Rollins Tars, who is currently affiliated with the New York Yankees. Lil ' David Manley, who pulls an oar in the Rollins Varsity Crew, is another of our brothers who makes the fraternity, Kappa Alpha, a leader on the Rollins Campus. In the social ladder, Kappa Alpha is indeed a name of distinction. We take the lead in sponsoring dances, open houses, beer parties, and the K.A. bar is known far and wide for its Southern hospitality. Our Open House held immediately after the opening of school, for the whole student body, is always a stupendous success, with dancing on the K.A. patio to the entrancing music of the best of bands. Our Robert E. Lee Ball is another event that warms the hearts of every southern gentleman in the Confed- eracy. Indeed, we of the Kappa Alpha Order are proud of our heritage. 200 rita M w„l, W -. M. During the past year we have had several out- standing students active in college affairs. In fact, the president of the Student Council was no other than our own Ken Horton, who was also a member of the O.D.K., Pi Gamma Mu, and 0.0.0.0. Jack McCauslin was another exceptional student, who not only was listed in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities, along with Ken, but managed 1o find time to win the Reeves Essay Contest twice and the Hamilton Holt Gold Medal. The President of the Publications Union and Business Manager of •Tie Sandspur was a Lambda Chi, too, in the person of Bill Frangus. Our two outstanding musicians in the house were Mack Israel and Bill Muncey. Mack is a renowned pianist throughout the state of Florida, while Bill is at least widely known around Rollins for his hot rendi- tions on the saxophone besides other things. Al- though not known for his musical abilities, no one will forget the humor of Buddy Johnson. Besides several Softball trophies that we have at- tained, this last year Bill Muncey added the Talent Night trophy to our collection. Headed by Commander Don Brinegar, football and crew varsity letterman, R Club Vice-President and Student association comp- troller, the Snakes strive for a versatile group to carry out the many functions on the Rollins campus. Other outstanding members are Lt. Commander Ed Cush- ing, our music major and Student Council representa- tive; Paul Shelton, Secretary and top scholar, and Don Matchett, treasurer, varsity fooball tackle and straight A accounting major. It is a significant fact that approximately two-thirds of our membership are the recipients of various scholarships, including all of the officers listed above. Among its member- ship are also such prominent campus figures as Francis Natolis, Student Council Vice-President and varsity letterman in basketball, football and baseball; John Vereen, football letterman, Sandspur News Edi- tor, and Interf raternity Council President; Ron Fry- mire, Sigma Nu ' s athlete of the year in intramural sports ,and John Coondog DeGrove, prominent so- cialite and sportsman on the Tar campus. The highlights of our social attempts are the Christ- mas barbecue, the White Rose formal, and the Senioi party. The brothers are proud of Epsilon Tau and of its place in Rollins activities. _ !) | First row: Stan Stipick, Jim Haywood, Paul Shelton, Frank Stockton, Bud Fisher, Francis Natolis. Even though Dr. Holt ' s scholastic record was never good enough to get in the club, we always give him the benefit of the doubt and think of him as an X Clubber anyway. Varsity football is a thing of the past at Rollins now, but a very good basketball team has taken its place. This organization finds itself very well repre- sented in that field, as seven out of the nine Rollins varsity members are in the X Club. Besides basketball stars, we also have our share of outstanding golfers. Although Clyde Kelly turned pro last year, we have a great golfer in Billy Key. In the field of intramural athletics we are enjoy- ing a good season, and future prospects look exceed- ingly bright. Our intramural football team had an undefeated season this fall, and for its successful efforts was awarded a keg of beer. Needless to say, we did not consume this award but sold it. The money derived from this sale was used to purchase six X Club scholastic charms to be awarded to any members who can maintain a C average for one term. A quick turnover of these charms is expected as more have been ordered for 1955. In spite of matrimony and other hazards of a co- educational establishment of learning, everyone is acting fairly normal and seems to be enjoying him- self. To sum it up, the situation is like a piano I have in mind, grank. 206 First row: Dick Williams, Lyle Chambers, Jim Kelly, Max Grulke, Jim Imand, Buddy Tate, George Whidden, Everette Williams Second row: Billy Key, Jack Large, Pete Fay, Clyde Kelly, L. Fourth row: Scotty Witherell, Frank Barker, Bill Ross, Bob Leader. independent men . . . President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary DAN EASTWOOD BOB McCOURT . LUIS GONZALES SEYMOUR ISRAEL The Independent Men of Rollins first appeared on the scene on the day that 01 ' Alonzo first gave up a strip of land to education and the college was formed. He appeared then and has remained on the scene for all the ensuing years. Their present constitution dates back to February of 1950, when it was formu- lated and adopted by the membership. In the Intramural race, the Indies have an early lead, having won both the tennis and the golf cham- pionships. Sports columnists have placed them in an unpredictable class. The social event of the year that the Independem Men sponsor comes in the form of competitive Talent Nights with dancing. The keynote of these affairs being fun and laughter and a good time to be had by all in the sacrosancts of the Student Center. At the end of each series of nights a winner is selected, and that social group receives a trophy. If one group wins it three consecutive times, then they automatic- ally retire that particular trophy. 208 F rsf row Don Kurz, Seymour Israel, Joe Augeri.
