Sfep right fhis way, folks, for the greatest entertainment on earth. The main events are about to begin . . . WE 1950 TOMOKAN ' fD CAT ON OM N STRAT ON FACULTY STAFF 0RGANI2AT 0NS ATHLETICS ONOR SOCIETIBS SORORITIES AND ' ' RATERNiT ES The Seniors of the Class of 1950 dedicate this year ' s Tomokan to a man who has served both them and Rollins College long and faithfully. His entire life has been dedicated to serving the interests of the faculty, staff and students. His compassion and understanding have won for him the respect, admiration and love of countless members of the Rollins Family. It is thus with heartfelt gratitude and pride that we dedicate the Tomokan to our beloved Dean of Men . . . ARTHUR DELANO ENYART PRESIDENT PAUL A. WAGNER Our Freshman President — amiable, charming and person- able — capable of walking in Dr. Holt ' s footsteps. The Class of 1950 and the entire Rollins Family wishes him the best of luck in his new position. DEAN WENDELL C. STONE Philosopher, scholar, teacher, and friend. . . Of infinite wis- dom and insight and a source of encouragement and knowl- edge to all who know him. DEAN MARIAN VAN BUREN CLEVELAND DEAN THEODORE S. DARRAH Loved and respected by all who know her — understanding, compassionate, helpful — a veritable mother to each and every Rollins coed — our own incomparable Dean Cleveland. A friend to all who know him — he enjoys college life as much as any student — fisher- man par excellence — noted for his strong cigars. A T The finer the mirror the sharper the image, but there must be some substance to what is reflected. The faculty of Rollins has proved this maxim through their years of constant service to the student body of Rollins College. Through our far-famed conference plan they hove moulded the students of today into the men and women of tomorrow. ENGLISH DIVISION First row: Dr. Marie Wagner, Nino Dean, Barbara Bennett; Second row. Here at Rollins this plan is followed to the utmost because our curriculum of indi- vidualized education is such that every student should play a part in the student government. The Student Council is composed of representatives from each fraternity and sorority, the independent groups, the faculty and the two deans. Through the various committees appointed by the council, the many student activities as sponsored by them are carried out smoothly. The annual senior dance is sponsored by the Student Council as well as other social events throughout the year. Th3 members of the council are elected by their groups and form a representative cross-section of the student body. Each year in the spring term the entire student body votes on the candidates of their choice for president of the council for the coming year. Student government at Rollins is as much a part of college life as classes and athletics. front row: Hugh Davis, Dean Enyort, Janet Patton, Harry Hancock; Second row: Pierre Thompson, Andoni deUresti, Ginger Butler, lack McCauslin, Gail Hastings, Ken Brown; Third row: Hank Gooci, Ann Knight, Maud Trismen, Sally Hidey, Rocky Flanders, Elaine Brackett, Bud Johnson, Catherine Sorey, Edith Schuiz; Fourth row: Charles Robinson, Pete Fay, Dave McKeithan, Joe Peoples. 1 u As integral a pa rt of all student activities at Rollins College as books and studies, are the undergraduate publications. THEAT THE ANNIE RUSSELL THEATRE The Rollins Players is an organization composed of students who have done outstanding work in the dramatics department. During the year they present a series of plays that are of interest to both the students and towns- people. The tryouts for the plays produced by the Rollins Players are open to all Rollins students. The members of this organization form the back- bone of the Theatre Arts Department at Rollins. Theta Alpha Phi is a national honorary dramatic Fraternity. Membership is conferred upon Upper Division students who have done superior work in the dramatics department. The Theatre Arts Department at Rollins is one of the finest in the United States. Under the capable di- rection of Howard Bailey, Wilbur Dor- sett and Donald S. Allen many plays of a varied and interesting nature are produced each season. The productions in the Annie Rus- sell Theatre and the Fred Stone Thea- tre serve not only as entertainment for the college students but also as a cul- tural attraction for the many winter visitors who regularly come to Winter Pork. The students in the Theatre Arts Department have an advantage not afforded in many collegs in that they have the opportunity to work and ap- pear in many of the productions with noted actors of Broadway. Rollins fooball coach Joe Justice graduated from assistant coach under Jack McDowall, took the helm this year and guided the Rol- lins team through stormy seas. His efforts can be called successful considering the dif- ficult schedule that was faced, plus the exces- sive injuries encountered to key players. Joe is at home in his new position, since he has coached the baseball team for the last few years. He hails from Asheville, North Caro- lina, and is a member of a very athletic fam- ily. Now that he has weathered his first sea- son he is looking forward to bigger and better things in the coming season. 148 MIAMI ROLLINS 5 Obviously overmatched, the Rollins Tars suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Miami ' s potent Hurricanes. The team played hard and vicious football in the second half with L. D. Bochette scoring both of Rollins ' touchdowns. The Tars scored their first victory of 1949 run- ning over a hapless Tampa team at Tampa. Sparked by Buddy Tate and Kenny Norton, the men in blue and gold won going away. TAMPA ROLLINS 149 Bobby Riggs Buzzy Rosenbaugh G W. Mooney Glenn Barrington DELAWARE ROLLINS Again playing away from home, the boys played creditably but were undermanned. Delaware, with ample reserves, after a scoreless first period began to click and soon ran up the winning margin. L. D. Bochette scored for Rollins. NEWBERRY ROLLINS In their first game before the home folks, the Tars put on their best bib and tucker and went to town. Led by Ken Norton and Jim Bryson, they defeated the Newberry Indians. B. J. Leathers, sensational Freshman lineman, made an auspicious debut. WASHINGTON ROLLINS A trip to St. Louis proved disastrous. Washing- ton, one of the top small college teams, proved too much for Rollins, by now an injury-riddied or- ganization. G. W. Mooney ' s play on the line drew raves from St. Louis sports writers. DAVIDSON ROLLINS 25 Davidson, victor over N. C. State, again had too much in the annual Homecoming game. The Tars, fielding a brand-new backfield and a variety of new plays, were never able to begin a sustained drive to pay dirt. Buddy Tate Punchy Polak Jim Bryson Pete Fay MUSKINGUM ROLLINS ■4.. This small Ohio school was the best coached and drilled squad to visit Orlando. Their attack com- pletely dazzled the Rollins team, who were still experimenting with a new backfield and new plays. The defensive play of Punchy Poiak was outstand- ing. Ken Norton Stokes Smith STETSON ROLLINS George Johnson A With a long winning streak against Stetson, the Tars entered this arch rivalry a 7-point underdog. But showing a great deal of fight, which always marks this contest, they bowed up and brought home the victory to a faithful band of victoiy starved Rollins students. E Rollins varsity baseball squad, Florida State Champions for the last two years, are undertaking an arduous schedule for 1950. Among the better known schools visiting Winter Park this spring will be North Carolina, North Carolina State, and the University of Alabama. Only two key members are missing from Joe Justice ' s crack line, which gained sixteen victories in twenty-one games last season. Coach Justice still has his fine mound staff consisting of Don Work, John Grey, Jim Covello, and Clyde Stevens. Together, these four comprise the most formidable pitching staff in the South. Behind the plate, Justice still has his ace catcher. Buddy McBryde, whose batting has been outstanding in the past. The infield will probably have Bobby Riggs or Harry Hancock at first base, Lyie Chambers at second, George W hidden at the hot corner, and Rusty Williams at the short-stop position. The outfield will be drawn from John Grey, Harry Hancock, Francis Natolis, Buzzy Rodenbaugh, Joe Hull, and Buddy Tate, with Natolis the only certain starter. COACH JOE JUSTICE First Row: Burzy Rodenbaugh, George Whidden, Buddy Tate, LyIe Chambers, Bobby Riggs, Chuck Ayers. Second Row: Jim Covello, Buddy McBryde, Dick Williams, Rusty Willioms, Francis Natolis, Horry Hancock, B. J. Leathers. Third Row: Don Work, Joe Hull, Bob McManigle, John Grey, Clyde Stevens, Dave Shelly. RUSTY WILLIAMS and LYLE CHAMBERS This year ' s squad appears to be more powerful than previ- ous Tar lines, but in gaining this power the team has lost much of its speed. Win, lose or draw, however, central Florida baseball fans will have a treat in store for them come March 17th, when the umpire yels: Batter up! The first practice was called by Coach Jack McDowall lust before the Christmas holidays with twenty-five candidates reporting. The squad was soon whittled down to fifteen of the best available talent in the school. The first game on the schedule was with Tampa. Led by Pete Fay, the Tars gave a creditable showing by scoring points against their highly touted rivals ' 86. Fay racked up an impressive 20 points in his college debut. Stetson bested the green varsity in their second outing to the tune of 60 to 49. Again Pete Fay was high scorer with 14 points. Jim Wesley and Jerry Cabrie played fine defensive ball. The Tars achieved their first victory of the season when they downed an inept unit entitled the Florida Transfers. The final score was Rollins 66 end the losers 44 with Ronny Frymire playing fine ball for the victors. Another defeat followed when Jacksonville Junior College visited here and walloped the Tars, 67 to 51. Jacksonville displayed a mixture of every- thing end completely outclassed Rollins. High scorer for the team was again Fay with 18. In the second game with Stetson, Rollins had a bad night, dropping the decision 70 to 45. In the second half Jock McDowall emptied the bench in an effort to stem the tide, but without success. High scorer for the Tars at this writing (midway in the season) is, of course, Pete Fay, followed by Jim Wesley, Francis Natolis, and Art Swacker. first row: Bob Boyle, Art Swocker, Jim Wesley, Chuck Spelsberg, Francis Natolis, Pete Fay; Secon y row. Lost to Coach Jim McDougal will be Buddy Behrens and Gardner Larned, both key figures in the galaxy of Rollins net stars. There are, however, four returning lettermen to form the backbone of this year ' s squad: Ricardo Balbiers, Norman Copeland, Paul Binner, and Tom Molloy. Candidates to fill the two vacant varsity slots are Rudy Bloch, Jim Wesley, Bill Goldrich, Bud Felix, and Bud Mor- rison. Athletic Director Jack McDowall has pointed out that it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure any high caliber matches for the Rolins team. This situation exists because the team is now en|oying an extended winning streak started in 1946. The possibility of continuing this winning streak seems good with the talent available, though it is felt that the team will not be as strong this year as it has been m the past. One of the most interesting matches the Tars will play is with the Club Chapultapec of Mexico. T. Bradley, have made an enviable record for themselves and today are considered one of the best small college crews in the United States. The Tars lost two pre-season races this year; one at the Gasparilla Regatta in Tampa and the other to Florida Southern in Lakeland, but they promise to really make things different on the Maitland course. On the 20th of May, Brad ' s boys will journey to Poughkeepsie, New York to compete in the Dad Vail Regatta, which is to small colleges what the Poughkeepsie Regatta is to the large ones. Running second only to Boston University at the Dad Vail last year, the Tars have an excellent chance of winning the trophy this year. Dr. Bradley, rightfully called the dean of southern crew coaches , has always boated winning crews and is looking forward to o good season for his eights this year.
