THE 1968 ROLLING LOG Published by the Senior Class ROLLING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL ROLLING PRAIRIE, INDIANA We Finish to Begin We finish to begin: Not to die and come alive once more. .. Not reincarnate as some bird or some boar... Not to start our lives again. We just leave our sheltered worlds, And enter another which we long to know... To make a place in. .. to watch dreams grow... To find that ultimate place for each where happiness unfurls. We finish to begin: As we leave this temple of learning, To begin a world of earning. But after we leave, what then? Will the knowledge that we have gleaned here, Send us on our ways; So that through the coming days, We'll grow nearer the goals we hold so dear? A respect for the wisdom and a desire to build our minds, It gave us as it taught us the knowledge of men And as we finish to begin, if we wish to really begin; Let's hope that we don't leave these cherished things behind. Jim Breaux CO-EDITORS Charlene Thoman Carole Stringer ADVISER Wynelle Hughes TO THE SPIRIT” OF THE ROLLING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND ALL THAT IT HAS MEANT TO THE MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THROUGH THESE DOORS TO ENTER THE WORLD—A BETTER PERSON—WE, THE 1968 ANNUAL STAFF DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK. This annual we wish to dedicate To the spirit of Rolling Prairie High, The school we're all about to leave, For its inevitable end grows nigh. A new school is built, and an old one lost, To lay dwarfed in the greater one's shadow; But that new one cannot... will not... shall not Darken the place in our hearts deep and hallowed. Though in largeness it was lacking, Its largess to us was grand: It gave us the spark and the knowledge, Upon which the mind, soul, and life must expand. So, for as long as we live, our loyalty we'll give, To the one school we’ll hold high forever more. Yes, Rolling led us well, and taught us to excel; So we thank you, as for the last time, we walk proudly out your door. Jim Breaux TABLE OF CONTENTS SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS CURRICULUM AND FACULTY SENIOR CANDIDS Seniors The Senior class officers for the 1968 school year were: Dan Van Schoyck, President; Jim Breaux, Vice-President; Joe Faulstich, Treasurer; Susan Lapaich, Secretary; and Beverly Carpenter, Reporter. Seniors Prepare for the Future... OUR SPONSORS... Mrs. Helen Heeter and Mr. Raymond Reed ... and through this preparation we have grown. Our class prepared for the Junior-Senior Prom last year.. .which was a success. Our Sophomore B-Team basketball team won the South Lake Michigan Conference tourney two years ago... and almost duplicated the feat this year with the Varsity Tourney. This year we reigned as the last Senior class to graduate from Rolling Prairie High School. We shared with the Underclassmen the fun of having spirit and during it all we not only had fun, but we learned from our failures, our joys, our crisises, and our successes. Connie Having Fun BEST SPIRIT IN THE COUNTY ... LA PORTE HERALD-ARGUS And so it went throughout the year. Rolling Prairie High School became notorious for it's spirit. The last few football games proved that we weren’t losers, and those first precarious basketball games showed each one of us that R.P.H.S. really stood for something. Huge signs started appearing in the hallways, and the shower room began to get a new look. The yelling at the games became so deafening that even some of the coaches from various other schools commented on the combined spirit of the team and the school. Mr. Vlasic offered to have a banana-cream pie thrown in his face by the class that had the most attendance (won by the Seniors) at the South Central game which was invaded by a hoard of R.P. fans that drawfed the home S.C. pep block. A comment from the press came from the reporting radio announcer during the Tourney. When Bill Rose won the Outstanding Player Award he commented, ...and the Rolling Prairie fans are going wild! This statement was typical, and our tourney games will not be easily forgotten by those in attendance. Whether the credit should go to our cheerleaders, the players, the coaches, the teachers, or the student body doesn't matter. Rolling Prairie High School showed what it could do! Dennis is wide awake and alert again. Some of the Juniors are energetic. JUNIORS PLAN PROM Even Mr. Rokosz gets in the act. Who's Smitty running from now? Hanging Gardens of Babylon Beginning in January, the Juniors spent almost five months working steadily toward the goal of completing the Prom by May 6. Flower parties were held each week at at the home of a different Junior and by the final deadline almost one thousand flowers of a wide variety were completed, along with the vines and fountains. In the gym the lowered ceiling draped into the main setting on the stage which contained the throne for the King and Queen and was accompanied by the two fountains and various garden settings. A pavilion type structure covered with flowers accented the center of the dance floor where the band was located along with the tables and chairs. The foyer was decorated lavishly with garden walls and the entrance was marked by two papier-mache lions. The entire prom was conducted in a grand way with the evening which included a movie in South Bend followed by a breakfast prepared by the Sophomore mothers. Sophomores mooching again. This honor is bestowed upon two of the Seniors each year and is voted upon by the Junior class. The 1968 Rolling Prairie Senior Class wishes to extend its full appreciation and thanks to the Junior Class for the determination and work that was exhibited in the effort to make this, the last Junior-Senior Prom for Rolling Prairie, one of the best ones ever constructed. We hope the new Seniors will receive all the luck in the world and also the fullest extent of pleasure and excitement in this, their last year. Rolling carried a very rugged schedule, playing such schools as Jimtown and Marion, both of which carried a high rating among the top teams of the state. The Bulldogs finished the season very respectably by showing great teamwork and lots of spirit in the last five games of the season. In those last games the Bulldogs won three, lost one, and tied one. The high point of the Fighting Bulldogs' last gridiron season was the 3-0 victory over North Liberty. They came on very strong in the latter part of the season to capture third place in the South Lake Michigan Conference Cross Country Meet which featured seven teams. Wade Meyers was named the most valuable player on the squad and finished first for the team in all but one meet. The team work and high spirits proved valuable in their final success. Senior Dan Van Schoyck, a three-year veteran, and junior Jim Stacy, a two-year man tied for the most valuable lineman trophy, which is given to the top all-around line performer for both offense and defense. The first most valuable defensive lineman award went to co-winners Doug Stombaugh and Ray Nickerson. Both were ends and both were equally praised by the coach. Stombaugh tied for second with 65 1 2 defensive points, while Nickerson, a sophomore, was third with 65 points. Stombaugh also averaged just under three yerds per carry as an offensive back. Sophomore Judd Hill, 5-7 1 2, 170, was winner of the most improved lineman trophy. He played nearly every minute of the games as offensive guard and defensive middle guard, accounting for 37 1 2 defensive points. Senior Gene Jonas, a three-year veteran, was named the most valuable back. The 5-8 1 2 145 pound Jonas, led the Bulldogs in rushing with 566 yards for a 4.8 average and caught two passes for 16 yerds. Jonas also was recipient of the coveted mental attitude trophy. Another sophomore, Dan Shead, was chosen as the most i mproved back. A quarterback who specialized mainly on offense, Shead hit 10 of 37 passes for 109 yards and one touchdown. In addition, the 5-9, 160-pounder kicked the winning field goal in a 3-0 victory over North Liberty and hit Dave Schroeder with the winning conversion pass in a 19-18 win over River Forest. Senior Larry Richardson, one of the three-year lettermen, was named most valuable defensive back. Richardson, a 5-10, 170 pounder, had 36 defensive points. The first game proved to the entire county that Rolling would be in the contention throughout the year by stunning John Glenn, the future Northern State Conference Champs, in a run-away contest. During the game the team shot 50 percent from the field. They went on to win three of their first four games. During the slump that followed, the team won runner-up honors in the Holiday Tourney. The County Tourney proved the highlight of the entire year and left many good memories mixed with the exciting emotions of advancing to the final game with St. Mary's. After the Tourney the Bulldogs finished the year with a lot of spirit and a minimum amount of breaks, including drawing Michigan City in the Sectional. The team impressed everyone that had an opportunity to see them in action, and although the year ended with a M.C. victory, the spirit and determination exhibited all year seemed more than JULES PLANNING THE ATTACK WOrth it. The highpoint of the year was the conference win over South Central, as is depicted in most of the photographs on the opposite page. The victory, the only loss suffered by the SateUites, was a bruising 7-5 battle that helped to determine the final standings. The team finished the year with a 5-1 conference record, and lost only four games during the regular season. In the sectional they gave a good try before bowing in the semi-finals to LaPorte. Our bus drivers—John Ryan and Beraie Mahoney TRIP Twenty-five Seniors from Rolling Prairie were among the seventy-one who went from LaPorte County to Washington, D.C., during Teachers' Institute, October 25-29. The group more than enjoyed itself while visiting such famous places as: National Archives, Smithsonian Institute, Library of Congress, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Arlington Cemetery and Kennedy's Grave, the Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington Monuments. The group also toured Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Mount Vernon. These Seniors will never forget the fun, the fourteen forks, the nights at the motels, the train trip, the squirtguns, and the Malox pills. Rolling beauties on lineup Ron is giving Chi another line! This is the punishment they received when they were caught! Kids got so train sick that some of them were climbing the walls. The Wild Train (or is it the kids?!?) Debbie Stayback and Darrell Cavin dream of whom??? The Three Musketeers really think he s Murderers in Disguise Smile...You’re in Rolling Candids Kathy Gives Them the Wave Do you in there? Marla, the First Lady!????? The boys inspect Jim's rose and investigate the cookies. BACCALAUREATE The girls group together and discuss the great punch and exclusive entertainment. AND Mr. Wolfe, Ron, Carole, and Mrs. Stringer join in the afterparty refreshments. Carole and Dave represent the Seniors as Mrs. Thirwell and Mrs. Krick, do the honors. SENIOR TEA start out the closing events for the Seniors and all tend to make leaving the old school just a bit harder. Baccalaureate gives us the final reminder to unite our spiritual goals with our material ones. The Tea is mostly a social event prepared for the Seniors. The long... and thoughtful... march to the final destination brings many scattering thoughts to the Seniors. Presentation of the proud and happy Seniors! Jim Breaux and Charlene Thoman take that important handshake. COMMENCEMENT Commencement is the time in a Senior's life to remember the events that have brought him to this, the final step into a world that is as unprepared for him as he may be for it. All of the events of the past seem to culminate as the graduate walks down that aisle; the thoughts... the memories. .. and the vast and unknown future all seem to combine into a single impression of What is going to happen next? No one can quite explain the comglomeration of reflections that do happen to run through one's mind on that final trip as a Senior, but it is one that can never be forgotten, nor should it be. It is truly a time to consider all of the past and all of the future. It seems as if the class motto sums up the entire mood of the ceremony, WE FINISH TO BEGIN! Sue looks like she really digs that diploma. Joe, Gene, Larry, and Darrel join the line after the ceremony. Twelve years of hard work and a few steps down that aisle. AND SO WE LEAVE School of our youth we sing to you (At last I'm on my own!) Praises and honors tried and true. (Thank God, I made it through!) Day by day within your doors (Just think I’m now a man!) Our knowledge must have grew. (Or could it possibly be grown?) But now to you we must bid adieu (They all said it would be sad, ) And go out to face the cold, cruel world, (But gracious, I'm so glad!) And maybe some year, with what we've learned here (Those people must be crazy!) In that cold world we'll make some warmth appear. (Yes, definitely they're mad!) We're like some feathered thing just leaving its mother's wing. (I'm sure I'll make it big someday.) It's now our turn to fly and earn our right to sing. (I hope I don't cop out.) But we're sure that we'll all make it, (It'll be strange next year without the kids.) 'Cause you have taught us, not missing a thing. (Thank you very much, Sir. Without a doubt!) So we leave you with the promise of... (It's over, yes, it's over now.) A promise that we must clearly (Strange but I remember that first day somehow.) Do our best to show the greatness of... (I've got a feeling that tomorrow I'll miss...) THAT DEAR SCHOOL BACK IN ROLLING PRAIRIE. ... Jim Breaux The co-editors would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Hughes, our patient and understanding sponser, who spent so many of her best hours over-seeing our ambitious and sometimes, unambitious, energy. Our appreciation to Mr. John and to the teachers' understanding nature throughout the year in aiding us in reaching necessary information and cooperating with our efforts is also remembered. The LaPorte Herald-Argus was one of our most frequent sources of pictures for the various events covered. A solid congratulations is in order, also, to each and every one of the yearbook staff that worked so diligently on an annual that seemed impossible at times. Finally, we wish to thank the student body that encouraged many of our escapades and provided us with the incentive to reach higher goals by being the best hams any yearbook staff could have dreamed of. With all the pleasant memories behind, the 1968 Rolling Prairie Seniors wish all of the future graduating classes of the new school the best of luck and sincere thanks. t . • ' ' ■ Vs ' ••: — - v'; v- - - • . -v - • . •• ' - - •.
