Student likfwefirtl mera Rate 'Utvitetancl ing The winners of the Mayor's trophy, journalsim award, and School Spirit awards are always recognized for their outstanding achievements. But on occasion someone new steps into the spotlight and receives an award that deserves a round of applause. One such achiever, Martin Huber, won two outstanding awards for his paper and display on the Growth of Chlorella. His paper was also selected as the best in the state of Illinois by the junior Academy of Sciences. This enabled Martin to submit his paper to the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. Kamran Hashemi, also a dedicated researcher, received two outstanding awards: one for his paper and one for his demonstration dealing with The Effects of Various PH Levels on the Biodegradability of Five Detergents. Freshman john Kendzior also was honored with an outstanding award for his project on The Separation of Drosophilla Eye Pigments Thru Chromatography Techniques. Each of these young men enrolled in Biology research freshmen year. These award winning student researchers have the opporunity to continue their research by taking an independent science course and by participating in the Annual Science Fair in Champaign-Urbana. Many large corporations use the polygraph test to screen future employees, xplains Mr. Klump inior Cathy Heile serves as a guinea pig as Mr. Klump hooks her up to the lectrodes tinterest finderh. Dorft Lie- tbe 'lDol9gralWer'5' Watching A lie detector test-a collection of medical tools used to make a recording of physiological reactions, not a little black box that flashes lied , Mr. Carl Klump, a licensed polygraph examiner, explained this theory to the third hour Psychology and Sociology classes. The instrument makes responses, but the examiner makes the decision, stated Mr. Klump. During his hour visit, Mr. Klump discussed the many uses of the polygraph test. Polygraph examiners are employed by large corporations to screen future employees. Law enforcement agencies also use the polygraph test to help apprehend criminals. During the second half of the lecture, the examiner gave a mock demonstration of the polygraph test. Three students, Cathy Heile, Laura Cleland, and Marion Siebert volunteered to participate in the test. Each girl was attached to a different piece of apparatus. A true test including questions couldn't be administered because it's against Illinois State law. The lecture ended with a question and answer period.
