The cowl-necked sweaters glittered mockingly as she strode past them, her nose held high. She flicked her long, blond hair back revealing acne-ravaged cheeks. She curiously inspected the price dangling from a pair of brown wool trousers. Her sharp intake of breath created a hissing sound, and her eyebrows registered disbelief. Thirty-six dollars seemed a preposterous amount of money to spend on anything. Feeling defiant, she pulled the trousers from the rack and moved to the fitting room. Tucking her tattered T-shirt into the waistband of the priceless pants, she admired herself casually in the mirror. Those fit you just perfectly. Will you take them? She whirled about to face the saleswoman squarely. Oh, I dunno. I've got a similar pair at home, and l never even wear them. I don't really need another pair. Lisa Mehringer Patty Sarich-ink

Wilting, dying petals fall the greenhouse breaks the flower escapes, fluttering in emptiness till at last it lands. Dead, banished but useful still as it becomes soil ready for a new love.
