The sun appeared through a slit in the clouds bearing down upon the Cheyenne warrior. Although the heat was not excruciat- ing, beads of sweat outlined the deep grooves in his forehead and danced upon the scratchy nubs protruding above his thin upper lip. Rain was due, yet the seeds of survival had not completely been buried. His children and grandchildren found the Cheyenne traditions and reservation an archaic way of life, while the old warrior would not harbor the thought of a modernistic lifestyle. His shoulders hunched forward at the intake of air and his nostrils flared at the exuberant exhale. The fresh sweet smell of Montana mountains enlightened him somewhat and a slight smile flickered about his mouth. A worn rugged hand reached up to rub the slightly raised mole placed on his left cheek but spontan- eously dropped to be jammed into a pocket. The other hand groped for the hoe as the storm broke over the mountains. The orange, pink, and purple glow the sky had once held faded away. Marcia johnson t a O l L' . ,Al . FFTLL One cannot help but wonder And gaze in silent awe At the changing of the seasons, The approach of the one called Fall There is beauty all around us If only we'll pause to see The Creator's wonderous handiworks And the plans of His majesty. The dew that glistens like tiny beads On the grass in early morn, The birds that sing so merrily Among the fields of corn That's standing ripe and ready For the harvester, anyday, To come and cut the stately stalks And clear them all away. The trees of every size and hue, The leaves that flutter down Like gaily colored butterflies Light softly on the ground. The many tinted flowers Holding out against the frost, Bravely showing little faces Though they know they'll pay the cost. To wither sumingly to die until another Spring Then the touch of God's almighty hand Will bring them life again. In these mysteries of nature His hand is in them all.
