She loves her parents so. The animal in the back that smells like a gas station sketches picture after picture of his eight cylinder four-on-the-floor, seventeen amp, twenty-four watt, piece of red metal, with the carpeting in the back. That's why they call him leader of the pack The chick in the third row with the low cut shirt and the high-hemmed skirt, talks behind her plastic mask, that she always wears to history class, about her latest boyfriend, and the latest school dirt. She knows she's not a flirt. The vegetable in the corner with his head down on his desk withdrawn from all reality wearing his parka like a security blanket and looking through one reddish eye, dreaming of his next good high. He wants to fly. But don't cry. Cause the teacher doesn't mind it. He keeps making sense, like nothing is really happening, and nothing is. That's the way he wants it inside his silent cage, and there he stays That's how he gets his pay, and all he has to say is what he's told to say. NOTHING Donna Betz

He continued to warm up, Content in the thought that she was There in the bleachers. She seemed to give the inspiration needed by The Star. The ritual began once more As the five of them took off their warm-ups. The team huddled together, Yet they were centered around him, The Star. The names were called With his always being the last. He pulled up his socks And trotted to half-court. All eyes attentive to The Star. He could feel her gaze upon him. This is what he lived for, To be The Star. She was oblivious to The crowd, the cheerleaders, Everyone except The Star. She watched his every move. He could feel her with him As he went up for that first jump-shot. He felt the warmth of her smile Even before the ball swished through. The crowd went wild as The announcer cried, Two points for The Star. He once more felt the ease as The moves came instinctively, For her unfaltering eyes were focused on The Star. As once more he sank the Winning basket, No one cheered more than she. No one cheered louder for The Star. Up in the bleachers he could see her And she smiled. He knew she needed him, Even as she gripped tighter The hand of Her boyfriend. Tom Choice
