l'lFl'l'lCl'l UCYVEIS CHI In an attempt to demonstrate democracy in action, Miss Bass and Mr. Huebner's American History classes sponsored a mock election. A voter registration center was set up, as well as voting booths. Students were asked to cast their votes for both presidential and gubernatorial candidates in a voting procedure that was for all practical purposes identical to the real thing. And so, on November 1, 1976, the students elected Gerald Ford as their President. It was an overwhelming victory: of the 487 voters, 76 'Vo gave their support to Mr. Ford. The reason for Mr. Ford's landslide victory in this mock election may have been the strong Republican feeling of the people who populate this area. It seems, however, that the feeling of the rest of the nation in the real presidential election was Democratic. Mr. Ford's victory at Rolling Meadows availed him little: on November 2, 1976, jimmy Carter defeated Mr. Ford by a margin of Zofo of the popular vote, and later he was confirmed by the electoral college as the new President of the United States. Although students voiced opposition to Mr. Carter just prior to the election, surveys conducted in the school after his inaugura- tion in january 1977 indicated that a high percentage of the student body had confidence in the new President. if 4 Linn Enockson and Melody Ragan were two of the many volunteers to help out in the mock election.

LUISFIT I3 VDUR OIDIINIIDVI GY' PRESIDENT CHRWER 'P bf the United States. I think jimmy Carter will make a good president. He has excellent ideas on how to get this country back together again. Karen Prejna f'80l He needs our help and he knows it. janice McCoy I'80l President Carter has proven to me that he knows what to do in a crisis, especially this winter when the country had all of the shortages because of the extreme cold. Mark Delisi l'79l I think jimmy Carter is a nice change for the government. Ginger Lynn Northrup I'79j President Carter listens to other people's opinions, and that is why I like him. Chris Paul f'79j He is bringing a spirit of security to the White House. Dave Creagh i'78l He shows his love for America every day. Karen Cornelius I'78l jimmy Carter is the people's pre- sidentf' Tony Piazza l'78l I am a little cautious of President Carter because a year ago I hadn't even heard of him. I think he rose to the top too fast. john Cameron I'77j I like President Carter very much. I feel he knows what he is doing and has a lot of confidence in himself. Carol Nyland t'77j Left: Poll judge jim Liotta assists Mike Abate in placing his vote. His openness and willingness to communicate with the people, the common man, will prove to be very beneficial to our nation. Charles Lisinski C773 President Carter is open, honest, and really concerned about America. jeff Zoellick l'77l jimmy Carter is the best Republican the Democrats could have elected. Mr. jeff Huebner He is close enough to the common man and yet seems to have the savvy to get things done. He reminds me of Harry Truman in his attempts to bring humanism to the office. Mr. Richard Rozycki
