This year’s Growler is divided into sections depicting the numerous events and activities which are influenced by our sur- roundings, the Ozarks. Doubtless this book will only be sentimental to those of us for whom with the passing of years, time will have mellowed its pages with memories. Then perusing these pages we will feel more and more that these were indeed the happiest days of our lives. Greg Letterman and Julia Legsdin are shown at one of the jobs which earned them the title of Did Most For R.H.S. Senior Superlatives 44 Lucia Hamilton and Bill McCracken seem to have already succeeded which makes the voting for them as Most Likely To Succeed quite accurate. Seniors Select Before enjoying another book, John Miller and Mary Martin, most intelligent, rested a brief moment. After this pause, they continued their pursuit of knowledge. Class Personalities The most gullible, Peter Rothwell and Sue Smith, are seen a bit dubious as to a story they just heard. Donnie Wallace and Judy Myers, endowed with the best personalities, beam at each other when they hear the news of the voting. The class clowns, Sue Adam and Gerry Gourlcy, are attempting to break down a table. 45 The King Cold Trio, Terry King flanked by Martha Tucker on the left and Kay Parry on the right, is an ag- gregation of the most musical seniors of R.H.S. Senior Superlatives Carol (Pip) Nations conquers Tom Bullman in a battle to decide the stronger sex. They are the female and male choice for most athletic seniors. Glenna Thorpe and Tom Hayes, the most friendly seniors, tried for grins and couldn’t quite manage them. The best dressed, Gail Loughridgc and Charles Blinne, were snapped in their favorite costumes for comfortable school wear. The Ozarks provide a perpetual storehouse of beauty and a haven of relaxation. During the hot summer months what could be more welcome than a picnic or weekend camping trip in the cool inviting atmosphere in one of the Ozark’s state parks. Just being there and seeing the indescribable beauty of nature makes one realize the inferiority of the human race to some superior being. Hazy blue water which appears to be infinitely deep, towering limestone bluffs, rippling .waterfalls, and winding forest paths are all a vital part of the environment in this Ozark Wonderland. The Ozark’s streams and lakes delight the heart of any angler. The rain- bow trout in a stocked stream provide a challenge for the more experienced fly fisherman while other anglers might prefer attempting to outwit a lunker” bass who is lurking beside a log in one of the Ozarks big man-made lakes. But if a more lazy, carefree, method is preferred, then floating down an Ozark stream or just sitting on the bank with a cane pole and a tin can of worms is perfect. A vine covered log cabin, encircled by a rustic rail fence; blossoming dog- wood trees; or a stately buck deer, his head held high and antlers sharply con- trasting against the blue of the sky, are only a few of the interesting subjects for the camera fan. Mark Twain once said that the Ozarks are at their best in the autumn. Surely when he made this statement he had been looking at the Ozark forests, blazing in brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow as if they had been dabbed with nature’s giant paintbrush. After seeing all these masterpieces of beauty, one can certainly take a deep breath and say, ”It’s grand to be alive in the Ozarks.” Composing your Student Council this year were, left to right: Mike Lund, Robert Cowan, Tom Sowers, Bob Crangle, Tom Hayes, Paul Reed, Mike Cave and sponsor, Mr. Ray Miller, Principal. New Coach Rc The Bulldogs in their third year in the big C.E.M.O. conference found the going mighty tough. After losing a large number of seniors and under the guidance of a new head coach, the Dogs began a big rebuilding job. Clifford Cromer, the new head coach, worked with the boys during the summer and things started to look good. A heartbreaking start, a 14 to 6 loss to Lebanon, was the first bad news. Many of the games were very close and decided in the closing minutes. Although the Bulldogs took last place in the con- ference, they did win two of three non-conference games as they defeated Houston 33 to 13 and Booneville 13 to 12. Larry Sidwell, this year's captain, paced the team in tackles and was chosen to the all-conference team. Mike McCaw was another all-conference choice due to his hard running and his lead in conference punting with a 31.2 yard average. Second Row: David Mitchell, Mike McCaw, Bulldogs Have Hard Season The Bulldogs had one of the most heartbreak- ing years yet. They lost 21 and won only 6, but 13 of the losses were by five points or less which made for some of the most exciting games ever. The Bull- dogs took fourth place in the Houston-Rolla-Lebanon Tournament plus winning only one conference gamg which was against Jefferson City. Graduation this year will take its toll as Don Wallace, Lynn Baylor, Lou Short, and Larry Sid- well will be missing from the first quintet. All conference forward Mike McCaw goes in for two more points. 125 Senior forward Larry Sidwell Acting as managers for the Bulldogs this year were freshman Jim Walker, sophomore Warren Geurin, senior David Mitchell, and freshman Craig Loughridge. Senior guard Lynn Baylor Senior center Don Wallace The Bulldogs had two men on the all-conference team, who were Don Wallace, and Mike McCaw. Lou Short and Lynn Baylor both made honorable mention. Don was also selected to the all district team for his fine season, during which he scored well over 300 points and was the team’s leading re- bounder. Sophomore Tom Batteen, center for the B Team, pulls down an important rebound. Freshman Robert Cowan drives by the Houston Tiger B Team and goes in to score two more points. 129 The RHS Golf Team scored well in the CEMO Conference ratings with an undis- puted second place. They placed third in the District and fourth in the SMS Relays. With this good background, they went on to earn four good scores in the 1961 state competition. One of the key things to note about this team is its youth. Only one. Captain Bill McCracken, will graduate this year so the 1961-62 team will have four experienced golfers returning to the CEMO greens next year. These boys should be high ranking competitors for the CEMO crown next year. The 1960-61 track team is pictured at the Missouri School of Mines track.
