DISIOR On a sunny day in September 1948, we, a group of mischievous children, descended upon the first grade c l a s s r o om s. Mrs. Broughton and Mrs. Doby were put in charg e of riding herd on us for our first year of instruction. Mr. Wallace was our prin- cipal at that time. Many of us were very excited to say our Bible verses to Miss Zura Williams and Miss Woodlief, our second grade teachers, because awards were present- ed by C. B. M. Faye Hailey and Dennis Perry joined us that year. Mrs. Sh e a was our third grade te a ch er. The multiplication t able was one of our problems that year. Mr. Davis came to Rolesville as our principal that year and stayed until we completed our n i nth year. Our fourth year found us separated again. Mrs. Winston and Miss Fuller tried to potmd arithmetic into our heads. In our fifth year, Mrs. Boyan and Mrs. West were our teachers. They were very p at i ent and under- standing. Douglas Pearce joined us that year. In the sixth grade, Mrs. Batten and Mrs. Applewhite g uide d us. I'm sure we all remember Mrs. Applewhite leading us in singing. Mrs. Ihrie and Mrs. Baldwin were o ur teachers in the seventh grade. Both of them taught us many things and were very kind to us. Mrs. Applewhite and Mrs. Carnes taught us North Carolina History fat least they Q9-dj. Our Orientation Day w as the one r e al highlight of the yearg also we enjoyed square dancing that year. Mary Murphy, Sammie Pridgen, and Dudley Tucker joined us that year. ln September of 1956, a group of greenhorns entered the ninth grade. We took the usual amount of teasing from our upper classmates and could hard- ly wait until we ourselves would be upper class- men. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Lowie had to put up with us that year. A football team was or g an i ze d that year. However, we lost four of our classmates at the end of the year: Sherman Marshall, Alfred Hicks, Roy Perry, and Rebecca Watkins. At the beginning of our Sophomore ye ar, Mr. Lanier joined us as our principal. He has been a great help to us ever since. Our group of seasoned Sophomores was guided by Mr. King and Mr. Price. Mrs. Williams joined us as our English teacher. She really tried to pound Julius C ae s ar and Silas Marner into our headsg let's hope she was success- ful. Shirley Watkins and G aylon journigan quit at the end of that year. Our Junior year had many h i g h l i g ht sg among them were: the Jtmior Play, It's AGreat Life , and the junior-Senior Banquet with the theme of A Song ln My Heart. David Mason and Jerry Gordon with- drew during that year. At the beginning of our Senior year, the class consisted of twenty-seven m e m b e r s since B e tt y Carter, Roy Rogers, and Jack Rogers had deserted us. All of uswere disappointed to know that we could not have a Senior trip to Washington. But, we have looked back with fondmemories over the twelve years spent in school, and we hope that our future will be as happy. We were fortunate to have had Mrs. Lanier and Mrs. Williams as our S enior sponsors. We are grateful to the m for all the help and guidance they have given us. Outstanding, rising high school seniors are selected from many parts of North Carolina, to attend each year. The boys have a week of intensive study about all forms of local, state and national govern- ment. Many leading public officials and dignitaries are present to lecture to the boys. The athletic part of Boys' State is very rigorous. Each day theyhave three and a halfhours of swimming, base- ball, basketball, or track. At the end of the week, elections are held and aboy is elected to each office represented in the state. The educational opportunities are excellent, and Boys' State is one week that Sammie and I will never forget. FRANK I-IODGE SAMMIE PRIDGEN N..,,-N I.
