Editor............ Business Manager Advisor............ ........Betty Clark . . . Gwynne Nichols Virginia Westerfield 1949 Rogue River High School Hogue River, Oregon Foreword As you travel down these familiar trails in later years, we, the Ro Hi An staff, want you to remember the good times we've had together as students, faculty, and friends during the year of the 1949'ers. Superintendent's Message Ro Hi An records another year of fun and work in classes and activities. Past issues record the growth and accomplishments of other years. We have gone a long way, but we are looking forward to further progress and improvement so that we can more adequately take care of each one of you. May the experience that you have had better fit you to work and live well and happily. Knowledge and skills are essential. This is becoming more and more a world for experts, but above all may we challenge you to acquire a character and personality that derives satisfaction from worthwhile accomplishment, that can calmly see beyond the dark clouds of today to the beautiful rainbow of tomorrow, that will make many friends be glad to know you, work with you and laugh with you. . FRESHMAN INITIATION f r The Freshmen as in years gone by submitted to the tortures of initiation. The poor victims were gayly colored with lipstick and shoe polish and with the bunches of onions that were tied around their necks, they really looked fit to kill (the Sophomores that is). The town folk of Rogue River consented to a march through town and through the stores. As the Freshmen marched, they were given tissue to sell. The proceeds of this went into the Sophomore treasury. That night, their gay colors drooping, the Freshmen returned for Kangaroo Court . With the various stunts completed, they were allowed to change clothes and enter the dance thrown in their honor by the Sophomores. Later on in the term the Freshmen returned the honor with a dance for the Sophomores. The Sophomores, happy that their time had come, began planning what was to be done with the new Freshmen, weeks ahead of time. It seemed that the Freshmen knew of the lurking danger by the looks on their faces. The initiation turned out as planned and a football game added stunts for the Freshmen to do. They were paraded around at half time by the Sophomores and had to give a cheer. The Sophomores gave a couple of dances during the year, one of which was the Pre-Easter, semi-formal Dance. The gym was decorated with rabbits and pastel streamers, and the party was adjudged the best yet. The highlight of the year for the class was the junior play Under Twenty , presented on March 11, in the High School gym. It was an outstanding production from start to finish dealing with a family who has to put up with the antics of two lively teenagers. The officers elected for the Class were: Larry McBee, President; David Hammett, Vice president; Marilyn Williamson, Secretary; Betty Simmons, Treasurer. The year was climaxed by the Junior-Senior Banquet and Ball which was held at the Grants Pass Country Club on May 6. The days of '49 was the theme carried throughout the entire banquet. Miniature covered wagons were Qf e°ch place along with memory booklets containing a menu of western vittles and a program studded with colorful wild west names for the _participants. Songs included on the program were Wagon Wheels , Gold Mine In The Sky , Betsy From Pike and Tumbling Tumbleweeds . The long-awaited affair was greatly enjoyed by the Juniors and their guests, the Seniors and Faculty. With their usual drive the Rogue River High basketball team emerged from county conference play in first place for the fifth consecutive year. Although last year the Chieftains won the season's play only to be edged out by J'ville in the ensuing tournament, this trip the team was first in the tournament as well. The Rogues were in particularly good form the night of the district play off with Gilchrist in the Central Point gym. The boys were clicking so hard and fast they made the kind of a ball club one rarely sees in high school games. Forging ohead to the State B Tournament at Union, the team's unbroken record of wins this season was stopped by Union in the semi-finals and the Rogues came out third in the state. The Rogue River High School Band is a very active organization taking part in practically all school programs. In addition to playing at both the Junior and Senior plays they turned out in uniform for football and basketball games. After going to Medford to play for the county B basketball tournament and to Central Point to furnish music for the District playoff, they finished the sport season by treking across the state to play at the state tournament in Union, Oregon. Representatives of the band participated in the massed band at Southern Oregon Music Festival in Medford. Several of the bandsmen were organized into a swing band, the ''Star-lighters'', which played for school and community dances. On March 29th Gene Davison and Mrs. Westerfield attended the Music Educators' Northwest Conference in Portland where Gene was a member of the All-Northwest Band of 250 players from five western states. The band finished the year polishing up their numbers for the Spring Concert on April 29th and Commencement. Chorus Jim Addington, Neol Wod-ley, Marilyn Williamson, Joan Klith, Joanne Mc-Gregory, Faye Kjellstrand, Frances Nixon, Janice Wad-ley, Ruby Twiest, Velma Bryant. Not Shown: Edna Stewart, Marceline Evans, Eugene Cummings. At the Christmas program the High School Chorus of fifty-two voices, under the direction of Mrs. Westerfield, again made an impressive candlelight procession, closing with Silent Night. A quartet added a humorous note with All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth . During intermissions at the Senior and Junior Plays, chorus members presented special numbers. A highlight of the seasonal events was participation in the Music Festival in Medford on the 24th and 25th of March. Here they sang with the massed chorus of over four-hundred from Southern Oregon schools, and presented two numbers as an individual chorus. The group finished the year by preparing for the formal Spring Concert, followed by Baccalaureate and Graduation. This time the mentors of RO-HI-AN were determined to have a printed yearbook with padded covers. To this end Joan Ford and Gwynne Nichols trudged many sidewalks to collect a large amount of advertising in order to meet the extra expense. Of special note is the art work of Frances Nixon on the division pages and the cartooning of Bob Nixon. They enabled the book to be individualistic. Everyone had a hand in the inner workings with Janice, Marilyn and John writing copy, Neal, Friedel, Charles, Durwood and Mary arranging pages, Rita typing and Gene doing picture pages. Betty and Gwynne set up the dummy for all to work from. Journalism Staff Morilyn Geier, Altha LeRoy—Instructor, Elsie Lee, Marceline Evans, Velma Bryant— Editor, Jim McBee, June Hennicke, Shirley Howell, Lee Smith, Donna Taylor, Joy Starr. Standing in background: Iris Gochanour, Patricia Kile. The Rogue Record successfully tried two innovations this year. For their Christmas issue the staff mimeographed the paper in three colors of ink which involved a complicated procedure. During the year the paper sponsored a crossword puzzle contest which proved very popular. The journalism class gave the winners, the sophomores, a wiener roast in Grants Pass Park as a prize. The seniors' contribution to the world of drama consisted of a three act play with atomic zest. Taking place in the future, the story brought many laughs when the people from Mars descended upon the unsuspecting household of Professor Breeze. Queen From Mars presented a real challenge to the dramatic talents of the class, but they came through with a good performance. GUESS WHO, HMMMMMM?
