EDUCATIIJN FOR THE FUTURE lVlERlCAN schools have as their principle an lQducation for the Futurew, which will train the youth of America to understand and interpret the great progress of mankind. The world is like a ball of clay. When this crisis is over, our present leaders will hand this ball of clay to us. We must sculpture it. We must do this with the greatest of fore- sight. We should mold it into a world which will mean security for all time. Xve must expand its possibilities, and abridge the distance between its nations. Xve must shape this , A world of many and varied cultures, races, and creecls, into a place where the people can work together for the common welfare of all. ln our school work, we will learn many useful and valu- able lessons to help us each day as well as those to help us prepare for a future of peaceg a future free from strifera future in which the MFour Freedomsn will be paramountg a future in which ulife, liberty, and the pursuit of happinessw will prevail. Herein lies Americals motive for education-a preparationfa foundation for a progressive l0IllOTl'0l.L'. WILLIAM A. GOGGIN ORLO M. ROLO Evelyn Hill, Pauline A. The scrap and magazine drives, the lied Cross Campaign, sale of war stamps and bonds, luetter attendance campaign wcre highlights of student activity. Through the efforts of home room ollicers the Treasury flag was awarded to our school for ninety percent sales of stamps and lmonds. Vice presidents conducted successful Roundup and Vaudeville sales cam- paigns. Deputies came in for their share ol' duty in keeping the halls orderly and traltie unsnarled. Many new students from all parts of the nation enrolling at Will liogcrs kept ushers and usherettes busy getting them acquainted and making them feel at home. Athletic representatives, hoth the lxoys and girls, materially aided a linc intramural sports program. All these activities. and many more were competently discharged hy student lmody representatives with the excellent cooperation ol the students themselves. Thus Will Rogers contributed its hit toward eventual victory and peace - - - DEPUTIES Front ROW! Nlaxinv liolun. lSzil'luai':v llilulions. .Inns-l l.4-.nllnmitcig Ile-lu thiilinklc. Day found the girls of Rogers dressed in gaily colored peasant skirts and white hlouses with dashes of green being very plentiful. Why ? Because it was the day of the Rogers Rythm Festival. One hundred and seventy mothers were the guests ol the girls this day. The mothers enjoyed the irish Picnic Dance, the Shamrock Dam-e and the Virginia Reel. Dainty cookies and lemonade were served to the girls and their guests in the gaily decorated girl's hungalow. Even if Old Mr. Sun didnit shine very brightly a grand time was had lay all the girls and their mothers. 8A 210-BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS-AMERICAN LEAGUE Bill Munlz, Jim Montague, John Morey, Noel White, Gerald Johnson, Ronald Fenwick. far' X My '1 .W ge , .s ,wif 9. '-saw? S BUILDING HEALTH FOB THE FUTURE S the knowing ones look back on the athletic season of 1942-4-3, they notice that the calisthenics played a major part in the health program at Rogers. This phase of physical education assisted in the actual playing stamina of participants in the varied intramural activities. When summer was still evident, and classes were settling down to their studies, speedball followed by football and basket- ball were the 'Lbig three. Overwhelming winners in these were the 9A's. Leading their teams to victory were John Crutch- field, David Hughes and Alan Nason. King Mud and Queen Bain were fea- tured, as paddle tennis held sway over the well populated grounds. Myron Pelsinger, Bobby Mayes, and Ray Ecton were winners in classes A, B, and C, respectively. When the air was tangy, the field hard and springy, naturally track was at its best. A good group of trackmen were gathered at the starting line when the coach called for the heats. Bay McCoy, Bob Hall, Chuck Roth, Richard Ellis, and Tom McLaughlin reigned as head spike- sters of track and iield. Baseball, the nation's favorite sport, ended the school intramural competition. P HE Girls Leaders Corps under the direction of Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Boyd is composed of representatives from each class and various other oflicers of our school. This group dis- cusses and solves many problems that come up in physical education. The girls work out rules and other parts of the physical education program. Sports events such as festivals, play days, and Olympics are planned by this organization. This year the Girls Leaders Corps has con- tributed a great deal towards the school's wel- fare. The girls have put forth an effort to make this school a better one. During health month, April, many of the girls drew posters on posture or health. The posters were then sent to department stores such as Buffums' where they were on display. The Leaders Corps has also done many other things to add to our'Will Rogers Junior High School, and have tried hard to participate cooperatively with the rest of the schools, activi- ties. Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Boyd, Doris June Miner, Janice Roudebush, and Patricia Rolo, our teachers and officers, have kept the Leaders Corps the organization it is.
