The students here at Rogers are friendly and always willing to direct a freshman to the fourth floor. Even though we have our fun, we can be serious and educational too. We have this terrible habit of growing and learning from each other Here at Rogers we have the pleasure of having a large variety of personalities. Because there are so many different people in one school, this has encouraged us, as students, to accept people for what they are and to grow as individuals. Rogers High School has undeservedly gotten the reputation as a rough and tough school. Gangs really don flourish in our halls and knives are not a common item in our school bookstore. We know that we are just like the other schools, we have our academic students and those who choose to fail, as well as the success stories of former students of Rogers that have made it big. So you see we're better than you think! Junior, Greg Lorenson is caught monkeying around in the halls again after eating his daily banana in the cafeteria. '10 Jil' Joe Cushner and slimy friend through the crowd at our first con of the year. Shelly. Kelly. Debi. and Visien are ready to go home after a knowledgeable year- book workshop at EWU. 4,1 2' x-KL Bonnie, Ginger. and Heidi support the Munchy Wagon by buying diet cokes. fm-f-QAQmmg.mmwgwnspwW-:gmsgmfmrpcQ:wmvsmfA1fy:wmvzzvrzvmzzmze:gsmsmwww -igmy'-WmW,m.mM,.MfMm gf-QA-:MewV1---wwgrzrwzf--iw-:-wg . Enjoy yourselfg these are the best years of your life so far. Everybody hears this at Rogers, but do they really need the reminder? Somehow they find ways to keep themselves busy. This summer many restless students went abroad on educational tours, cross-country to workshops or camps, or maybe just cross-town to the Hillyard pool. But before you could say, Let's party, summer was over, and Freshman were spotted wandering around campus. But these Freshman were a little less afraid, thanks to orientation day, September 2, l986. it By the time Leadership Camp, Spirit Week. and Homecoming rolled around, they were becoming skillfully camouflaged as Juniors. One by one, they appeared at parties until they, too, were called by their first names, and were welcomed aboard the Pirate Ship. Enjoy yourself, these are the best years of your life so far. The cheerleaders did several cheers and a routine to a song by Wham. The new teachers were introduced to everyone, and then our football coach Mr. Squires, got up and talked about the football team and their goals. He asked everyone to go to the games and support the team to a victory. Finally to wrap everything up, the band played our traditional fight fl The cheerleaders started the con by leading the student body in a cheer called Ooh, that's cool . This was the beginning of a spirit- raising con to welcome the new year. The importance of having an enthusiastic crowd of supporters was stressed by Mr. Pelo, Mr. Rotchford, and guest speaker Mr. Coke-Roberts, but the students did not meet the requests. lt took a while to quiet them down. Each day during the week of Homecoming the students here are given a chance to test their spirit and their wardrobe. All of the students had the chance to get involved and dress accordingly to that day's theme. This year Monday was none other than Hawaiian day. On Tuesday we all went for a ride on the range for Cowboy day. Wednesday brought out the bizarre in all of us as New Wavers filled the hall to make Rogers look like a typical day at Riverfront Park. On Thursday we all dared to be different by dressing up in our nicest clothes. Then on Friday we all showed our school spirit by dressing in none other than our school colors: purple and gold. Many of our teachers got involved. The teachers came up You IIIUSI tell me. Jim. who your new barber is. I love tlnt haircut! 7-1 WH! with some far out costumes. The l986-87 year was off to a great start thanks to the extra effort put in by six very important members of the Rogers family. With the help of their advisor, Ken Pelo, the executive A.S.B. officers worked very hard to meet the wants and needs of the student body. This often meant spending a lot of time outside of school working on items for A.S.B. Most of the funds needed for the A.S.B. were raised through dances, T-shirt sales and any other school sponsored functions. The yearbook budget allowed only four girls to go, Shelly Slentz, Debi Flores, Kelly Gaumer, and Visien Vu. They spent three days working hard on making our Treasure Chest the best it can be. The girls stayed in the Morrison Hall Dormitory, while Mrs. Ward, the Advisor, commuted from her own home to Eastern each day. They learned more about layouts, creative copy writing, graphics, and how to cope with the cafeteria food at Eastern. When school finally started, the great start turned into a slow start . Mrs. Ward had to train the new students, as well as the previous ones, for they had changed publishing companies, from Taylor to Jostens, and needed to learn the new techniques. As you can see, the Treasure Chest turned out in flying colors, and once again, is on the ball. ur Cheerleaders Are Top Gu The i986-87 as aerobics, exercising, and cheerleaders started stretching, learning how to jump their season with You properly, stunts, and learning new Betl. Well there is a solution to this, that is known quite well throughout our school as the Rogers Record. Our newspaper staff was combing the campus for the latest beats to inform the students of their environment. The editors of the newspaper were Karen Shoop and .leff Jones. At the semester break they traded off so that Mrs. Toms getting into the groove of things with the Roger's Record. Scott Steele. Joe Miller. and Ed Gay this time caught in the picture with smiles instead of being behind the camera, 64 during the first semester Karen had the opportunity of getting the staff to beat the deadlines and organize the paper. During second semester, Jeff had the wonderful opportunity to take on the same challenges. The newspaper gave you the news about what was happening and information on upcoming events. The students were interested in the record not only for the news, The Word lsgjOutr but for the students for their achievements. The Rogers Record broke away from tradition in a major overhaul. When once it only accepted submissions of short stories and poetry, now has expanded to involve cartoons, and editorials. Editor Jeff said, The journalism department definitely has done well for itself, quality takes time. We've made it to the top! lt seems like only yesterday when the class of I988 were little Freshmen being guided to the fourth floor by the oh-so-helpful Seniors. As Sophomores, we knew the ropes but weren't really ready to cope. This past year as the al- mighty Juniors, we were waiting in line to take our Pirate Pride straight to the top and put Rogers High School on the map. lf you think that the Juniors spent their last year as underclassmen having the time of their lives, you're almost right. But not all of the year was fun and games. These Juniors had to face the days of harder school work, higher expectations, major tests- such as the P.S.A.T.'s and the S.A.T.'s, and working out their plans for the future. ,- X, -xx-,Xi - , -ij.: fp- ' X 'SX iffifi rfiiff QQ1:,'.'. 1 P:,'f:., , - ,. ,Lf 7 'Q + WG Paul Ackerman David Adams Shawna Adams Tahnya Ader Q, Kathleen Aleman Rae Ann Allen Raylene Alvis 1 Rodney Anderson Deborah Aukett Gene Autrey Robert Babb John Babcock Robert Bacon Edward Bailey Dallis Bair Aimee Baker Robert Ballard .Julie Banich Robert Barnes Cristopher Barney .lon Barnhart William Barr Scott Barringer Gary Bass Paula Baumiller Tonya Beach Ronald Beck Darrin Belgarde X 4 X926 ff vs 1 af l F. 8 I- 1 was Q: as sv, ' f .V I l . if Lockers At Their Ver Best' Talent exists. We found that costs of lockers ranged from 45 cents to 40 dollars depending on the individual and the extension of time and worth they were willing to contribute to their locker An important question we also asked was Why do you think your locker IS special? They have known each other since eighth grade and have become a lot closer because of this. We always get along. We have our differences on certain things or situations, but over all, we work good together. replied Tamara Hochstedler. Junior Class President. when asked of their relationships outside of ASB. Tamara took care of most of the planning for class meetings. She needed to get the agendas to all of the reps before the meetings At the meetings she tried to keep things going smoothly and quickly. The Vice President, Shala Roestel, had to take care of any committees made. She also had to keep the meetings running smoothly without disruptions of people getting out of line. Dani Martello, Secretary. kept the minutes to every meeting, then typed them out, got them copied, and handed them out to the representatives. The Treasurer, Tim Cotter, took care of the money. He kept track of how much the Junior Class had. how much they spent, and how much they made. -Debi Flores X ag t Q sag .N X ,XFN are g ff J V William Horwath Donnie House Bud Howell Cinditha Howell Ray Humphries Shelli Huntsucker Denise lnman Lance Jasper Lane Jasper Lawrence Jasper Christine Jepsen Ellis Johnson Eric Johnson Nancy Johnson Robin Johnson Suzanne Johnson Kelly Johnston Kelly Jones Kristie Jordan Laura Keimig Teresa Kelly Apbun Khanchaleun Jamie Kiehn Ann Kirihara Shelley Kittilstved Bobby Kiolseth Christina Klarenbach Brian Klatt Pamela Knerr Harvey Knorr Joshua Laird Janeen Lake Theresa Lamarr Dwight Lamp Jefferey Lane Traci Larson Joseph Lasalle Cherie Lawson Steven Lay David Lenz Alan Leonard David Leslie Corey Lewis Cherie Liacos Gregory Lorenzen James Louie Susan Louie Larry Lyle Jamie Lyon Angel Madison John Madison Dani Martello Jeffrey Martin Ronald Massie Christopher Mastin Russell Matlock Tricia Matlock Kelly McCoy Lisa McDow Donald McMillen Wendy McMullin Shawn Meese Angela Mellstrom Lois Meyer Rebecca Miles Joseph Miller Michelle Miller William Miller ,fy af 88 Rep Junior representatives had the duty of getting all of the Junior Class input on improvements or suggestions Then they presented them at the A.S.B. meetings. I can talk to my friend about whatever it is that bothers me. Either about him or one of his friends and he would give me advice on how to deal with it in a way that no one would get hurt. Junior Luanne Hammersky said of Otis fa nick-name for her friendb. Boyfgirl friendships often brought about false speculations from unknowing friends and acquaintainces. Most overcame these situations because they found them not so important as losing a confident. lf I have any guy problems. I can talk to him and he can understand and explain the guy's part. I mean girls don't always understand guys. but with having guys for friends, they can help. Tammy Graupman. Junior, replied about Sophomore, Scott Hermsmeier. This year the activities were fun-filled and added life to the campus. The opportunities were endless for the students who t wanted to be involved. The students' choices ranged from numerous sports activities to clubs. such as the Foreign Language, Drama, and A.S.B. Dances and cons were held to ensure that all students had opportunities to be involved and have fun. One of the most popular choices was the Associated Student Body government. The A.S.B. drew people from all four grade levels. These students were selected by fellow classmates. The committees formed by this group of students helped plan activities in which everyone could be a part of. The Spirit Committee arranged a competition for a volleyball game. The class with the most people at the game won an ice cream social. The Juniors scored that victory! The Dance Committee planned the dances. These well-attended dances ranged from mixers to semi-formal dances like Homecoming. The various clubs were all fun and exciting. They covered areas of interest to fit the needs of many students. A student could choose an academic club such as Jets which delves into math concepts through games and computers, to Foreign Language Club, which helps students learn customs from around the world. Ya ,f W ww f P- S'x Pack Gets The A lau Sadie's originally started with the theme of Lil' Abner being caught and married by Daisy May in Dog-Patch and all the students would dress to represent these characters. Over the years the dance has kept the theme. but changed to a costume dance. The Sadie's Dance is one of Roger's biggest dances. Every year the turnout is tremendous. It is considered the funniest dance of the year because PP the people enjoy dressing up and a few enjoy getting married by Marry'in-Sam played by Mr. Lorenson. The costumes ranged from Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Jailbirds, to the generic Six-Pack of beer. The Six-Pack was considered by the applause of the crowd to be the best costume of the evening. IOUY Rhonda and Melissa sure look happy Nobody better mess with my pretty and proud with their dates. Give it up Troy and Kevin, Jock Shelly is already taken by two beauties, Mike and Sean. P..l. Jammin' This year, the theme for the Christmas dance was pajamas. The students had to wear pajamas in order to be admitted into the dance. When the dance was being planned, the dance committee had three ideas for the dance. lt was to be a formal, semi-formal, or a pajama mixer. The committee had the student body vote on these three ideas. The theme chosen was the pajama mixer. Overall, the students wanted a mixer, but they were not sure about wearing pajamas to a dance held on December twelfth. Most of them stuck it out and came in their pajamas. but a few chose to undress outside the cafeteria. Pajamas worn this year were long johns, but a lot of them wore robes and slippers. Greg Stricklen and Chris Brink are en- joying themselves at the Christmas pajama mixer. LeAnn Wenzel smiles with her eyes while dancing with Sen- ior Ken Sylvester. Everyone who at- tended the dance enjoyed dancing in their pajamas. Scenes from behind the camera. Mike and Tracey look like they enjoyed the dance along with everyone else who attended the dance. They look really tired of smiling though. Take it. One. two . . . three mysterious young men. What are they doing outside the cafeteria? Undressing? Do they know their pictures are being taken by an unknown photographer who is silently laughing? Two smiling examples of what was worn at the pajama mixer. Fuzzy slip- pers and all. The fuzzy elephants and the rainbow legged catepillers are a good part of the girls attire. Dancers were scattered all over the cafeteria having a great time. That's what school dances are all about. No matter who you're dancing with. Right? Aren't they Cute? All six of them. They look like they are ready for a slumber party. Long johns are very popular with this years junior class. It says something about them doesn't it. The Valentine's Day Dance took place on a Saturday, a first here. This mystical evening took place in our own school cafeteria. Of course, with the lights down and traditional red, white, pink valentine decorations, our surroundings magically transformed into an elegant ballroom. Couples danced the night away with the theme of the dance being Lost In Love . Even though attendance was low due to wrestling regionals, those who went had fun. Dorian Studio took couple shots. The Lost In Love Sweetheart's Saturday Dance background that was used was pink balloons with baby blue contrast and clouds surrounding the balloons. Mr. Cs disco played top ten music for this February l4th event. The real highlight of the evening's events was the selection of the Valentine's Royalty. Due to various district sports finals a few actual winners had to send substitutes, but most did attend. Tammara Hochstedler had the honor of announcing the royalty for the evening. They were as follows: Senior King-Joe Ochsner, Queen- Kelly Gamby, Sr. Pince- John Lloyd, Princess- Carole Brandvold, Jr. Prince-Mike Burchett, Princess-Shelly Fanning, Sophomore Prince-Eric Olgren, Princess- Heather Kruger, Freshman Prince- Tristan Chapparo. Princess Kris Hochstedler. Junior Debi Flores, who attended the evening gala with Mark Scognamiglio, exclaimed, Getting ready during the day was very hecktic, but the evening was romantic, especially all the slow dances. They were no longer the babies of the family but students on their way to academia. As active participants in sports, clubs, and Student Council, the Sophomores gained valuable experiences. They assumed leadership roles that will take them into their Senior year and beyond. 7 l Many sophomore relished in their ability to pass their driving test. Once this feat was accomplished many sought jobs which would enable them to acquire their own dream-car . Some even settled for an old junker that would get them around Hillyard. Whether it be sports, grades, or even a personal private goal. But to do this, you must believe in yourself. THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN lf you think you are beaten, you are, lf you think you dare not, you don'ts If you'd like to win, but think you can't, lt's almost a cinch you won't If you think you'll lose, you're lost. She has been in ASB, Cross- country and track and her grade point average places her with the top students of the school. Many high school students have part-time jobs. Tonya is no exception to the rule. She delivered the morning paper between the seventh and tenth grade. Her work was considered commendable and she was selected to participate in a National Contest sponsored by Parade Magazine. She was one of the I75 kids across the United States who was chosen to go to England and Scotland for two weeks. While in England. she stayed in London and saw many beautiful castles. museums. and rode on a double decker bus to go shopping at Harrads. Her favorite sight was the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. ln Scotland Tonya resided in Edenburgh and traveled to many beautiful ancient country estates and castles. But, as all things must end, Tonya came back to the states full of fond memories of her newly found cultural experience. She still hopes that someday she will be able to return. Now, in Tonya's Senior year, she has continued to be involved in ASB, Cross- country and track, but her all american job now is at McDonalds. -Theresa Smith Jkt N16 Y ll M lm ' f , l r X l -. , . During all of this, her grades have remained outstanding. One thing that makes her unique is her title of Jr. Miss of Spokane. Judging was based on poise and appearance and fitness. In order to be ready for the fitness routine she and the other girls practiced two times a week for a month. Long formals were worn for the poise and appearance routine. Those two items, and a one and a half minute talent act were judged. The day of the pagent there was a breakfast for the fathers and daughters, and a fifteen minute interview with the judges. In the talent contest, BeckySue had the winning dance routine which led her to win the title for Spokane. State competition was held on the thirty-first of January in Pullman. They proved this at the numerous cons and events throughout the school year. The class of '9O' was the first class of the year to be entitled to carry the school spirit stick out of a winter con. They earned this honor by being the most spirited and respectful group. They also won the class competition by changing clothes inside a sleeping bag the fastest. A principal generally serves on different committees and community groups within the district. Being an alumni of Rogers means coming back to many changes which include the Annex. the Industrial Arts Department, and the Fieldhouse. English Cooking It Up With Style There are many things which have to be done in order to be a school cook. They start as a substitute, cooking their way from school to school. At first they only work about two hours a day and gradually work up to a full shift lasting from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every school day. Here at Rogers we have seven cooks who have all been working here at least four years. They each have their own job for which they are responsible, and they prepare all of the food we eat right here at school. They all enjoy cooking very much, and being with the students. However, Helen Murphy, the head cook and manager, said that this year there were less students eating in the cafeteria. Diane Floyd B.S. WSU, M.Ed.
