Leaders Learn to Love and Be Loved This year's camp was held at Camp Larson on beautiful Lake Coeur d' Alene. Students from all four classes attended and many faculty members demonstrated their pride by showing up. October 29 to November 2 was not an ordinary week at Rogers. lt was Big R week, Big R week was ton- ed down because it was test week, yet students did get involved in lunch time competitions. There was a dif- ferent way to dress each day of the week. Monday everyone wore their clothes inside out and backwards, Tuesday was dress up day, and Wednesday was rainbow day, everyone wore as many colors as possible. Thursday was Grease day and Friday was purple and gold. The week ended with a con where the Homecoming Royalty was crown- ed, Later Friday night, we had the Homecoming football game. After the game, students ended the un- forgettable evening at the Homecoming dance in the cafeteria. Sadies Dance 1984 The idea of a Sadie Hawkins Dance began with Al Capps Car- toon 'Lil Abner. ' lt seems there was a Dogpatch girl called Sadie Hawkins, who couldn 't get herself a husband. So her father declared her birthday 'Sadie Hawkins Day' for the sole purpose of marrying off single Dogpatch girls and tying down pesky Dogpatch bachelors. People began this dance wearing ragged jeans, Daisy May blouses and bare feet. But on November 16, 1984 people appeared not only in Dogpatch attire, but also in a variety of costumes such as punk rockers, wedding attire, matching outHts and Halloween costumes, Getting HlTCHED by Marryin' Sam alias Mike Cagle has always been a tradition. Before you tails to the guys you have to let them cool down and then try to tails. The team has come a long way this last season. The best games this year were the three games that they won. Coach Daryl Squires felt that the team could have played better than they did, but he still felt they played very well. The main improvements the team needed to malse were to be physically and mentally stronger for next season. What Coach Squires tried to improve on, as a coach, was getting the program together for a better team. Squires felt there were many advantages to being head coach of the team. The members listened to what he had to say and respected his views as a coach. He was able to express his feelings and got to heb out the players in getting them to play the way he felt was best. 59 Junior Var. They achieved this by taking the city B title and continued to stay play as a squad. They had a great advantage over other B teams beo they practiced with the Varsity team and therefore gained experience improved. This team of 14 young women set their sights for the district play-offs. Coach Kara Sollars, in her second coaching year, first of Varsity, worked with them to achieve their goals and wanted to see them a team without internal conflicts. A goal, which, they did, in fact, reach. Their team was strong in defense and passing skills, but still work- ing on better hitting and to be more aggressive. Discussing some team disadvantages, the one that was most predominant, was the girls' lack of height. But their good, strong defense and their tendency for fast hustles on the court, made up for their smallness. Coach stated, They are a smart bunch of girls. They work hard and don 't give up. Learning About American Customs Rogers had the privilege of having six foreign exchange students visit us for our 54-85 school year. There were five seniors and one junior who came from various coun- tries, such as Germany, Finland, Mex- ico, and Spain. They were involved in many school activities such as band, FLC, Leadershio Camps, breakfasts. Senior Dietrich Seega from Ger- many stated, l like the U5 because it's a big country full of variety. I wanted to be an exchange student because I Wanted to learn more about other cultures and traditions. Also I wanted to learn and improve on my foreign language. What a stud! RAI E5 Here ls a bunch of wlld and crazy senlors. Seniors Who Care This year we had a special group of seniors. Everyone was a leader and they could do their own thing, unless they did a certain act. The seniors had to get permission by Mr. Schuerman to do their acts in cons or at other special events. The seniors who care were Darren Neal, Shawn Kennedy, Rob Shoop, Matt Lane, .lohn Serben, Tro y Piazza, Pete Shelton and Ed Bass- inger. These nine young men represented school spirit and seniors who care. They also wanted people to get involved with school activities, no matter what it was. The whole group thought that what they did was a blast. As Darren Neal put it, The more you do it, the funner it gets. Jlm Koch helps people get their lockers open. Shown Kennedy ls dressed for the occasion. The seniors perform or the collseum. 96 Dancers Rock All Night Rogers students attended many mixers this year. They were approx- imately every two weelss apart on Friday nights. Mr. Scheurman had originally planned on having the dances in the field house, because there was more room. Only two were held there because there were too many problems, such as missing tennis shoes and stinlsy socks. From then on the mixers were all held in the cafeteria. lt was a little more crowded, but it smelled a lot better. The purpose of the mixers was to get the students more involved. The mixers were a great way to meet new people and to become better friends with the people that you already lsnow. Mrs Haugen looks pleased with the conduct of the students Susie and Shown strut their stuff. The People Who Bring You the New Reporters Dig for All the Facts to Get Their Stories Nws, Cris and Mike work to get a page ready ro go to the printer, When Kevin Cosner, Ace reporter, was asked about why he thought this year's newspaper staff was suc- cessful, he quoted, Well, we get along. Which is the typical sentiment throughout the group that puts out the Rogers Record. It is a dihicult task to produce a newspaper, to 'put it out like clockwork, as advisor, Sandi Toms puts it, is a process that few other Record staffs have done with success. But this year people on the newspaper did more than write up the news, they also did many community-centered functions. At Halloween, for example, the staff put on a party for kids with M.5. This year the staff was able to ac- complish quite a bit due to excellent leadershp .ag-N These girls wish the deadline was over. 'ig if - S '15 --...-Q, Q. me 'F ' X Eating again, Karla? This year's Varsity Wrestling Team of 1984-85 remained undefeated throughout the entire season. lt was the Hrst time we've beaten the undefeated Mead, since 1977. Coach Ken Pelo, who has coached Varsity Wrestling for twenty- five years, feels this team is the best we've had in eight years. They have worked extremely hard to get in better shape and have shown great improvement as the season progressed. He really en- joyed coaching the team because they showed great pride and spirit for the school and had superb sportsmanshio. The team was very confident in themselves, and their teammates. When one of the guys lost an individual match, he wouldn 't get down, he would just worls harder ta win the next time. Coach Pelo said that next year's team will be as competitive as this year's, but also added that all the guys leaving this seaso will be missed next year. 115 8 X J, is Ni W ,X.x ,V Let's Dance. Freshman Wrestling Just as A wesome as Before The Freshman wrestling team is much compared to that of the frosh wrestling team from 1981-82. They wanted to be the best ever, not only in wrestling but in the classroom and everywhere else. Coach Pomante has been coaching at Rogers for two years now and he said that the teams he has coached were the best. The wrestlers have very ,good team attitudes and they worked very hard to gain wins. The top wrestlers were Troy Mize, Mike Burchett, and Shawn Fisette. The former Rogers graduate, coach Chris Lynch has been a coach here for four years. During this time Chris has seen nothing but improvements among the team. This year Chris stated that she wanted two strong events, those events turned out to be floor and vault. This year three all arounds heped to breals one hundred with team scores. Those girls are Sue Schuyler, Sue Dunn and Dana Robinson. This year a new assistant' coach, Lori Wilson, was welcomed to our Rogers family. Lori felt that the team had great potential to be in the top two at districts. She erjoyed her Hrst time coaching at Rogers very much. She also eryoyed seeing all the spirit each sport had for one another. There was a big change in this year's competiton. ln- stead of having 1 on 1, they had double duo meets. This consists of 4 teams competing at the same time. Although it's still 1on 1, this was thought of to save time. I There goes Robert burnin' up the COUH. 9.9, sq... f . .. Leading the mighty Pirates of 13 players is junior, Robert Jefferson, Captain and one of the top scorers with Dan Smith, Clyde Gibbs, and Rod Stuart not far behind. Being a young team this year C4 sophomores and o juniors? has had its disadvantages, but will be a tremendous factor next year because of the 10 experienced players returning. The disadvantage is nor playing as well at the beginning of the season as at the end. Coach Preston 's goal was and will always be to develop the team to the best of their ability in all phases of the game. M y job is to prepare them, with the best of my ability, to win every game. The team 's goals were to improve self-esteem and to have outstanding athletes, students and individuals. 121 Boys' JV Basketball Dedication ls Their ,si-'1 Goal Heading the J. When asked, from an outside point of view about Mr. Preston 's gram, Coach Lentz said, lt seems to be working and is headed in the direction, but alot depends on the dedication of the kids. Girls' Varsity Basketball Striving to Better Their Techniques The Varsity Girls' Basketball team of the 1984-85 season had an excellent year. ' The girls just wanted the satisfaction of playing well and worked hard on making it into the city play-offs. They wanted to obtain respect from, not only their teammates, but also from other schools in the Greater Spokane League. The girls had trouble in the area of shooting, which they worked hard on improving all season. Coach Bill Gaul wanted them to get the technique worked out, instead of just throwing the ball toward the hoop with no skill involved. Coach Gaul has been coaching basketball for thirteen years, eight years of boys and five years of girls. His main goal for this season was to get his philosophy of coaching known throughout the G.5,L. program. 125 JV Girls' Basketball ' Shooting Through a Great Seaso This year's Junior Varsity girls' basketball team had a great year. had a high level of dedication and a great winning attitude. Mr. Kight, who has coached the team for two years, felt his team h excellent person to person to full court pressure defense. His main goal to have the team improve their game record this year. The only thing they needed improvement on was their shooting which they did improve on as the season progressed. Freshman Basketball Girls Work for a Mnning Attitude The girls' freshman basketball team 's goals for the 54-85 season were to arn to improve their basic skills and to havea positive attitude. They had rear offensive and rebounding techniques, and often had good com- backs toward the end of each game. They tried hard on improving their efensive plays and gaining more conhdence in themselves. This was Coach Traci Huffner 's Hrst year coaching at Rogers. Her own per- onal goal for the team was to set them in a winning attitude, on and off he floor. Looking for an open man Cwomanj. New spring materials were featherweight, mostly ,crinlfled cotton in calming col- ors - the prettiest pastels ever - mixed with white or just alone. These pastel colors weren 't used only by girls but by boys also, Pants ranged from old stone-washed denims to the newest style of so- called crop pants, pants that go on- ly up to the ankles. Newest style in shirts was big buttons and so-called half-shirts. Girls were often seen in slfirts with jumpers and jumpsuits with shorter length and bolder shoulders. Navy was popular again, this time especially with yellow. Big earrings in various colors were in. Mesh gloves and socks were used to lift spirits and give a spike loolf. Declfshoes were IT in shoes. Any student from Rogers could try out and many were used to put on the hit musical play Grease, The plot of Grease was one of traditional background. Sandra Dee a very quiet and reserved girl. Danny is a rough and tough guy. The two fall in love, but their different personalities makes it very dif- ficult for the two to get together. after a lot of hard work and compromising, the two got together and the story ends happily. Mrs. Logan, Mr. McGuire and C. C. Cayer put a tremendous amount of hard work into this outstanding play. Many hours of hard work made them great. Prac- tices were routinely held every day after school for 3 hours. Practice started in October and lasted up to the day before the play was presented. The play was per- formed on January 17, 18 and 19. The success of the play made the Rogers family very proud and happy. Richelle Johnson, Rizo, shows the girls how to drink wine at the slumber party. Vision Quest Hits Spokane For 16 months Rogers students awaited the release of Vision Quest. Various problems and advertising ploys delayed the him 's release, but Vision Quest premiered here in Spokane on February 14 and opened nationally on February 15, 1985. For the Hrst week of showing, Vi- sion Guest did extremely well, not only in Spokane but all over the nation, stated John Coztects of the him ad- ministration in Seattle. Even though Vi- sion Quest did well at the box ofHce the local critics didn 't care for it. They felt the relationship between Louden Swain and Carla, his house guest from New Jersey, would never happen to a high school student, especially one from Spokane and that the whole storyline was just unrealistic, But could it be tha the ones who are unrealistic are th critics? They obviously have no ide what goes on with high school student these days. Gn the other hanc' not everyone in Spokane liked the film. The Spokesman Review stated that Director Harol Becker made Spokane look as if it was run by water ways. Most Rogers students felt the Hlming of Vision Quest was an experience and that Matthew Modine did a good job in mak- ing the wrestling look realistic. To differ with Spokane critics by the time Vision Quest had been showing for two weeks it was one of the tap 10 movies at the box ofHce. Students Review Vision Quest I liked the movie because it was filmed here in Spokane and because Matthew reached his goals in the wrestling match. Darren Neal I thought the movie was great. The reason I liked it wcfs because he reach- ed his goals with Carla. And in the last wrestling match. Shawn Crosby The movie was ok, ldid like the fact that it was filmed here in Spokane, and here at Rogers. Justin Trevino I've seen the movie twice and I thought it was better than the reviews gave it credit for. I would also recom- mend it to my friends if they wanted to see a good movie. Park Huck I really liked the movie, especially the last wrestling match. I think I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to see Spokane on the silver screen. Ericka Anderson l would pay to see it again. I thought it was a really good movie. The part I lik- ed the best was when he was looking at her shotts in the laundry. Dan Martin The movie was alright. I guess the main reason I went to see it is because I was curious as to how it turned out. I wouldn 't pay to see it again. Mike Chaparro Though I wauldn't pay to see it again, I thought the movie was really good, I like the last wrestling match the best. Frank K ollman l liked the movie because a lat of my friends were in it. But I don't feel it was worth spending my money on it twice. Sarah Smith lf the movie hadn't been filmed here in Spokane I don 't think I would have liked it as much. I did like the sound track. I also liked the part where they were driving back from his grandpa's, and the last wresting match. Tim Moser l loved the movie. lliked it when he was running through the streets, and across the bridge. I would have seen it even if it wasn't filmed here in Spokane. Christine Lawsen l thought it was really interesting to see your own city in a movie. Katie K aminski lt was pretty good mainly because you see your own city in it. Lanie Ethridge lt was alright because our school is in it alot. Tonya Finley lt is an inspiring movie, it makes you realize you don't have forever to do something and that you should go out and do it before it is too late. lloved it. Laura Brown lt was a good movie and had a lot of interesting parts in it. It was worth going to see. Lisa Desenberg lt was a really good movie. I liked seeing my friends and my school in a movie. Sweethearts - All We Need This year 's Sweetheart Dance was not very successful due to low atten- dance and that the music was not played to its potential. On the average, couples' dances do not draw as many people as the mixers do, but this dance had one of the lowest attendances. People did not like how the music was played. The music was skipped quite a bit, and when it did, they put on another song and never Hnished the other. The theme was All We Need. The colors were red, white, and pink. Pictures were by Bob Hess. Mth the team showing more enthusiasm and dedication than last year, they ser their goals high. Since it was only the second year of soccer being in the GSL and here at Rogers, they worked hard to reach the goals they had set. As compared to last year, the size of the squad and the spectator turnout both increased. The interest in soccer should increase as the teams get better and the action during the game improves. Both teams were balanced, having both good runners and Heldmen. Throwing was the girls' only weakness, and that was due to the loss of last year 's seniors. ln both teams the spirit was enthusiastic. Some social events, like a pizzafeed were held in order to increase team unity. Girls and boys set individual goals weekly, before meets and three season wise. As Mr. Squires said, Winning is nice, but if the kid feels that he can be proud in the end, he has done his best. The potential to 'do well is there. We are coaching the kids to improve individually and also as a team. Our goal is to have a winning season and to qualify as many kids for district and state as possible, was Mr. Kinzer 's comment. The team practices were co-ed and centered around every per- son '5 own events. There were only a few seniors on the team, a good point was the number of sophomores. So the future looks very bright for both teams. 169 Varsity Bays' and Girls' Tra Up and ove- 'TW life9OO Are we olmosf there? x ' or ff, a or .r . or M I ' if 'rf o Y ,W , K N, ,bp ik 1 'ki is L L .XR W This was o good one! Pere Varsity Baseball Attitude and Experience The Varsity Baseball team of the 1984-85 season, coached by Jim Paton, had a tremendous time trying to reach their goals of making it to the play-offs and turning the shp around. Out of the twenty to twenty-five players that tried out for the Varsity team, there were fourteen or Hfteen that were selected. The mcyority of players on the team were juniors, which they felr was an advantage because the experience from this year will heio them to be an outstanding team next year. The team had both ex- cellent pitching and hitting abilities but needed to acjust themselves to having better winning attitudes. Junior, Duane Sorenson pointed out, We have changed the Rogers' attitude and I believe we can get somewhere. With Coach Paton working the guys to their maximum, they im- proved a great amount throughout the season. The time and effort that the team members put in, payed off toward the end of the season. 175 Junior Varsity Baseball The Junior Varsity Baseball Team had a good rumour with 19 players, i cluding sophomores and juniors. Instead of be- ing a modihed slow pitch, it was a modiiied fast pitch. This, stated Coach Cooley, is going to be the hardest change for the girls. Coach Cooley went on to say, This has been a building year for us. The talent in the league was strong, and with the modiiied fast pitch the team 's strength varied. My main goal was to have a fun- damentally strong team. The varsity team consisted of juniors and seniors. They practiced every night after school from 3:00 until 5:00 or 5:30. They worked on hitting, pitching, running, and many other softball techniques. Coach Cooley also said, With the leagues being tougher and the competition being stronger, I feel the girls have done a good job. They came in at about average this season, and l was proud at the job they did. They worked together as a team and individually. They worked hard, and their work paid off in the end. l feel they were pleased with themselves and thejob they did this season. T 179 Junior Vars. You've probably heard that before, but it 's true and maybe you should take their advice Eagle Weekend, lovingly set up by Dennis Schuerman, is designed to build self-image, improve personal relations and climb the ladder to success. Stated Junior Carla White, l feel that l really learned something about myself and l came back feeling positive about almost everything. The day started off arriving at Liberty Lake about 9:00. From then on until about 9:00 pm were a series of sessions with a senior counselor and 7 to 10 students in a council, discussing self-image, relationships with others, goals and, overall, just getting to know each other. Then there was a dance and camphre afterwards. The following day was partially Hlled with more positive sessions and the most important and emotional session of the two days was the Stick Ceremony. This involves students getting up in front of the group to dedicate their stick to friends, family, etc., by puf- ting it in the Hre representing our feelings, that everyone has, to keep the Hre of spirit and love burning strong. lt is a time for truth and love which is shared, felt and carried on throughout the whole room. k X After 2 hours, there 's no hurry to sir. These groups were lead by a senior counselor who hekned them throughout the entire weekend. Q if 1 'Q 1 z .:1.1 Y I Y. If you are like most teen-agers you could probably guess what that describes. Of course that is the beginning of a concert. Spokane doesn'r get many of the big name groups, but every once in a while we get a fairly decent concert. The reason for this, according to Jon Robins of KEZE, is that Spokane charges the same to rent out the coliseum as it costs to rent the Seattle Center Arena. More and more groups and promoters don 't see Spokane as a viable market anymore. lt is going to get worse unless a new stadium is built.
