Seniors Display Constructiveness 40 42 43 Art Provides Opportunity The fine arts department pro- vides an opportunity tor the student to receive instruction in the many and various areas of art. Courses are offered in basic design, an un- derstanding of the field of art, sculpture, pottery and crafts. Creative drawing, painting and printmaking, as well as sign paint- ing and commercial art, are of- fered for those students who may be planning a career in art. — W. L Aller What ever happened to finger painting? o Ted Marshall is busily, frantically emerged in the creation of another masterpiece. 44 ■HT7 n 1 The selection of ready-made clothing is one of the subjects taught in the clothing classes. Domestic Management Taught Future Homemakers Today ' s homemalcer is more concerned with managing family resources and relationships, than with producing fam- ily goods. For this reason, Homemaking classes emphasize good management in every area. Our new class called CHEC, helps girls prepare for employment using skills learned in Homemaking classes. — M. A. Procter Gaining valuable employment training is just one of the profitable advantages of being CHEC. Stuudents partake in products of imagination in Homemaking. 45 Mr. Denny Alspaugh, head of nursing personnel at Eastern State Lt. Edmund Braune of the Spokane County Sheriff ' s Department, introduces four Washington State convicts in a special con. Social Sciences Emphasize Understanding Psychology is the science of human and animal behavior. It is taught as a life-oriented course with an emphasis on assisting the individual to gain a better understanding of himself. Among the areas studied are: Learning, personality, intelligence, heredity and environment, biological foundation of behavior and mental illness. The student is en- couraged to read widely in the field and to internalize that which he reads. — L. T. Martin Sociology is the study of man acting upon and reacting to his environment. There is an emphasis on the social structure and organization of society and the conflicts and problems arising within that structure. The causes, effects, solutions, and the preventa- tive measures used to cope with these social problems are discussed and analyzed. — K. M. Hanneman Physical Education Adds To Learning Driving . . . hitting . . . stretching . . . running . . . comprised the activities of the girls ' Physical Education program under the direction of Mrs. Travis, Miss Foss, and Mrs. Lewis. The girls learned team cooperation in playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, and Softball. Individual achievement was emphasized in bowling, golf, and archery; poise, body control, and coordination were attained by the gymnastics and modern dance Erogram. The girls ' Physical Education classes this year actively pursued the goal of a ealthy mind in a healthy body. The physical education department is quite similar to other departments found at Rogers. As the boys progress in their activities, they may choose to specialize in one sport, such as: Tennis, cross country or track. This can replace the regular P.E. curricu- lum scheduled by the teachers. In class the boys learn the basic fundamentals in a variety of sports. Usually, the activities follow the important sports during the school year and the classes are made interesting in this way. r - A Typical chaotic scene in boys ' P.E. Industrial Arts: Background For Employment Bruce Housam works on an advanced project. Chuck Inks and Mike Harrington inspect Larry Wother ' s near finished work. The Industrial Arts Dept. at Rogers High School gives the boys a chance to learn many things about our industrial world before they graduate, and go out into the realm of employment. Many students have not made up their minds about what they wish to do as their life ' s work. In the shops, they have an opportunity to explore various aspects of industry. Skills are important today in every job. In the shops and drafting room students begin to develop skills which will help them to hold good jobs later on. As we grow older, we often find occupational choices change, but certain basic knowledge and skills are necessary to advance in the complex so- ciety in which we live. At John Rogers, opportuni- ties are available in a variety of subjects. What one can do, and how well he does it is likely to be a good index to success when one is out of school on the job. — W. H. Chapman Two students explore the world of science through scientific experiments. Variety Found In Science Biology, one of several laboratory courses offered at Rogers, is usually taken in the sophomore year. It supplies basic knowledge of plants and animals, us- ing current, new explora- tory techniques through the laboratory approach. Physics is a course de- signed to give the student a good comprehension of some of the major con- cepts of physics such as light, motion, force, elec- tricity, heat, magnetism and atomic theory. Integrated Math-Sci- ence combines the math and science in a one year course concerning topics in physics, chemistry and mathematics that are felt to be important to an un- derstanding of the natural world in which the student lives. A credit may be earned in either math or science. Chemistry is the study of elements, their reac- tions, and how they react to the world around us. Through the use of text- book and laboratory ex- Eeriences, the student arns about the proper- ties of substances and en- ergy of change in the sub- stance. Students take an active part in biology experiments. Boys Invade Home Economics A home economics course for boys was re-instated this year. This semester course taught boys how to cook food. A special part of the program included the prepara- tion of salmon, pheasant and moose ham- burger. As a test of their accomplishments, the boys hosted the girls ' class at a dessert. Money management, mending, groom- ing and etiquette were also covered in the class. The class analyzes their future roles as bachelors, husbands and parents. — M. E. Miller Now they know how much fun mother has!! Scholarship to the Gordon Bleu? A funny thing happened on the way to the stove!!! New Ideas In History And English What are the social studies? Generally speak- ing, most experts think of the social studies as a group of related fields, including: political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, geography, and history. Since no one could pos- sibly teach everything known in these fields and since no student could possibly learn all that is to be known in these disciplines, teachers and stu- dents must pick and choose that which corresponds with their own objectives, coupled with the poli- cies of the schools. We, at Rogers, feel that social studies prepare students to be good citizens; that social studies teach students how to think; that social studies pass on the cultural heritage of society. In order to accomplish the above we believe in the de- velopment of inquiry skills, the development of attitudes and values, and the acquisition of knowledge. If we accomplish our objectives, social studies should prepare each student to live intelligently and effectively in the future. H. A. Sleizer Teaching aids are helpful in providing better learning. 54 Cadet Foster Walsh used closed circuit TV. Appreciation and communication are two of the most important aspects of Eng- lish. Through literature, students of all ages are given opportunities to lead fuller lives. The complex world in which we live neces- sitates effective communication as never before. English teachers strive to have stu- dents appreciate their cultural heritage and communicate with their fellow man. N. D. Ormsby 1 Speaking techniques taught in English 3. 55 Business Classes Display Ambition Rogers High School is fortunate to have one of the best equipped business departments i n the city. Students may choose from one to a dozen areas of study, and, for the advanced students a complete secretarial lab is available. Busi- nessmen have recognized this valu- able training, and Rogers ' business graduates have always been in de- mand. M. Stumpf Seeing adds to learning. Secretarial science covers every aspect of office work. Students Assist Teachers FRONT ROW: Cathie Flaa, Marian Dayharsh, Linda Suriano. One outstanding program that was broadened this year to include almost every subject was that of Teachers ' Assistants. The program provides teaching opportunities for students who show interest and capability in one of their favorite subjects. Duties in- clude: Teaching class, checking pa- fers, and helping the student with is problems. 58 This year, we the Junior class officers would like to make our goals of the following: 1. Create more fund raising ideas for the class to choose from. 2. Create more Junior Class involvement in school ac- tivities. 3. Better ourselves in the knowledge of student govern- ment for our future use as citizens. Junior Class Secretary, Connie Kincaid Participation in activities is enthusiastic. This fall, the league was under the leadership of president, Janine Hanson; vice president, Glenda Hanson, secretary, Jody Braim; treasurer, Sharon Dawson, and the adviser, Mrs. Helen Leland. The main project of the fall officers was the Dad and Daughter Dessert. Ellen Larson, chairman, and her commit- tee, chose the theme, The Good Ship Dad and Daughter. On sweater day the Girls ' League con featured a style show, and after school, there was a mixer. Special projects included charity drives and a pajama drive to help the USS Hope. During Christmas, Girls League helped a needy family. This year, the annual Christmas play was Surprise Party in Mother Goose Land. Mummey, adviser. Boys ' Federation became involved in many activities this year, with varying amounts of success. One of the Federation ' s pet projects over the years has been the annual Mother-Son Banquet. The Banquet was held on the 28th of November, under the leadership of vice presi- dent Sand, and resulted in a commendable amount of success, especially as far as most of the mothers were concerned, for it isn ' t very often that they get treated with such special at- tention by their sons! Bob Isitt, secretary Ron Sand, vice president Displays Character During the Christmas Season the Federation worked with ASB to provide some amount of happiness to the needy fam- ilies of our community. In a money raising effort the Boys ' Fed. in alliance with the Girls ' League set up a Santa Claus (Ron Ulmer) in the front hall to whom the students could come and talk and donate money. On the last day the Federation went out among the stu- dents collecting money, and the response was tremendous. Food was bought with the money as well as a few toys for the little ones of the families, and then was delivered to the homes. All this and heaven too! Homecoming activities are centered around two main events, a football game during the day and a dance that night. A homecoming court consisting of four princesses and a queen preside over the week ' s activities. This year the Homecoming Court included princesses: freshman, Gina White; sophomore, Debbie Boyd; junior, Karen Belieu; senior, Kathie Walker, and the 1967 Home- coming Queen, Jaque Wallace. In the homecoming game, held against Gonzaga Prep, Rogers football team tied Prep 7-7. All in all 1967 Homecoming proved to be a great success. A quiet moment. Don ' t worry. ASB Leads Fall Activities Elected in the spring of 1967 as Fall Semester ASB officers were: Mark Kondo, president; Bob Lundstrom, vice president; Susan Hoffman, secretary, and Mike Kondo, treasurer. Fall ASB officers were very active. Mark Kondo guided the student council smoothly and efficiently. Bob Lundstrom set up a student exchange with Mount Tahoma High School. The secretary, Susan Hoffman, was instrumental in getting a press box built for the football field, and Mike Kondo worked with Mr. Mabbott in establishing the Gold Card System, which enables senior citizens to attend high school events. This group of officers also endeavored to bring the school constitution up to date. They also purchased a video-tape camera. One of their most gratifying accomplishments was handling the annual canned food drive for needy families. These officers also continued interschool relations with other schools. Officers from other schools were invited to attend our ASB meetings and officers from Rogers visited other schools in return. Photo Staff Serves School Publication Mr. James Buckley, adviser. Gary Ratzlaff Ed Feldhusen Mark Rattray, Ted Harty, Jim Lee This year six student members made up the Rogers ' Photo Staff. The photo staff serves the school by taking pictures for the Rogers Record and the Treasure Chest, school publications. Dan Danforth served as head photographer. 133 The 1968 Treasure Chest Staff started the year with a spirit of ex- citement and enthusiasm. The addi- tions of the larger size format, more pages, and the new academic sec- tion, posed a great challenge to the hardworking staff. Under the guidance of Mr. Clay B. Swisher, journalism adviser, the book began to take shape as the theme, Past Equals Future was developed, through the recollection of the many highlights of the school year. Rogers ' staff mem- bers who wrote about events happening at Rogers, as well as timely editorials of interest to the students. At the end of the first semester, the beginning jour- nalism class published the cub issue. Experience in news gathering, layout construction, public relations and proof-reading was gained through this class activity. Watch out! There go the fingers. 138 Spring Swings With ASB Spring semester has been one of the most productive at John Rogers. This couldn ' t have been possible without the unit- ed efforts of the officers. These officers were: Jerry Weaver, president; Alan Olson, vice president; and Nancy Pyette, sec- retary. This spring, the Rogers ' handbook was revised. All of the officers worked together revising the book with Alan Olson in charge of getting it printed. All officers did a commendable job. The officers also put into effect the Mt. Tahoma High School exchange, started by the fall semester officers. This student exchange is planned to be a continuing pro- gram at Rogers. A tentative contract for student exchange is already drawn up with other schools in the state. Among the many improvements, Dale McDaniel, Chairman of Constitution, brought the constitution up to date. Popcorn was sold during lunches to supplement the ASB funds. A Stu- dent Forum Committee was established as Jerry Weaver ' s plank and put under the direction of Larry Domrese. As anyone can see, the spring semester officers were busy working for the good of John Rogers High School. 140 Nancy, Alan and Jerry: Them ' s city folk! Officers Add Imagination To Girls ' League Spring Girls ' League officers for 1968 were: Sandy Jilbert, secretary-treasurer; Donna Finch, vice pesident; Jaque Wal- lace, president. During their term, they planned a Dating Game con, a fash- ion show, and an All-City Tea. In the Dating Game con, the committee cha ' rmen dressed in costumes to represent their committee. Janine Hanson and Pat Patton won most original costumes. Becky Goldschmitz chose Ted Crandell as her date and Ron Sands chose Judy Howe. Off! cers went to North Central for a style show and Ferris invited them to their March meeting. In turn, each school was invited to attend a meeting. At the end of the spring term, an All City Tea was held for all the new and old Girls ' League officers throughout the city. This year, Roqers was the host. Each Girls ' League president related activities they had done durinq the term, and each school got a cake frosted in the school ' s colors. Success of the spring term is due to the hard work contrib- uted by the committee chnirmen and members as well as the expert leadership of the officers. As the Lilac sea- son rolls around, each high school chooses a princess as its representative. The queen is chosen from these representatives to pre- side over the week-long festivities. At Rogers, selection begins with nomina- tions for candidates in the homerooms. Then each girl is briefed on her speech topic and the elimination process begins. Beginning with 18 girls, contestants were reduced to four finalists. From the four fi- nalists, Sue Coe, Margie Best, Bonnie Parks and Leilani Wickline, Rogers chose Leilani as princess. Lani is well known around school as a cheerleader, a member of Triple Trio, a Girls ' State representative for 1967, Na- tional Honor Society member and member of the Smoking Council. The Key to Happiness was the topic of Lani ' s extemporaneous speech. In her prepared speech she talked about Chief Gary, education, industry and the people of Spokane. Most activities are run by the junior and senior classes, but this is one event exclusively for the sophomores. All sophomores are required to take one semester of speech. The best speakers from the speech classes are then selected to com- pete in the speech contest. Participants for the three areas, Oration, Radio-TV, and Interpretive Reading, com- pete in the school auditorium during school. Other English classes observe the contest giv- ing the participants a live audience. Winners in orations were: 1st, Tom Eng- dahl; 2nd, Donna Brandt; 3rd, Karen Durant. Winners in Radio-TV were: 1st, Barbara Thain, 2nd; 2nd, Phyllis Cline; 3rd, Tom Dressier. Winners in Interpretive reading were: 1st, Sally Ellis; 2nd, Deanne McGhee; 3rd, Linda Buck and honorable mention, Shelly Nichols. The Speech Contest was a rewarding ex- perience for sophomores. The everyday life of students wasn ' t just reading, writing, and arithmetic. The 1967-68 school year held the student body together in a long lasting friendship. This is the life! We don ' t have oggressive girls at Rogers. Do we? Girls ' League Sponsors Girl Of The Month Each month, one senior girl is chosen as girl of the month. Nominations are made in senior homerooms the day before the Girls ' League con. The girls with the most nominations are then announced at the con. Prior to the con the only girls who know the name of the girl of the month are members of the Girl of the Month committee. It ' s an exciting moment for any girl when her name is announced as Girl of the Month. Girls ' League also soonsors girls sent to Girls ' State. Each year a girl, or a number of girls are sent to represent our school. Schools throughout Washington send a represen- tative. The girls meet and have workshops on gov- ernment relations and the like. The following year each of the girls comes back and relates her experiences to Girls ' League at the first con. Janine Hanson and Ted Crandell spent March 11-17 at Mount Tahoma High School, Tacoma, Washington. Attend- ing classes and activities, they found the schedule there much different than at Rogers. On March 18, Janine and Ted arrived back at Rogers with two Mount Tahoma Students, Judy Tollefson, a senior girl, and Tracy Bartoy, a junior boy, who spent a week at Rogers. Some of the activities which they attended were the National Honor Society Tapping Con and the Coronation of Rogers Lilac Princess. These students had the opportunity to learn under a differ- ent educational standard, as well as the chance to meet many new friends. Judy, Tracy, Janine and Ted, all agree that this was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding events of their high school careers. Ted Crandell, Janine Hanson, Judy Tollefson, and Tracy Bartoy, exchange ideas. Judy and Tracy discuss time spent at Rogers. Mr. Paul C. MacGown tells Judy and Tracy about some of Rogers ' policies. Junior Prom Depicts Theme: These Cherished Moments With the help of the Pirate Pickle, the Junior class organized a vigorous fund-rais- ing campaign. Juniors contributed to the ASB treasury by selling pickles at each lunch. Other ac- tivities were an all-school volleyball game between faculty members and students. A bake sale netted $104 profit for the Junior class treasury. Each homeroom was expect- ed to meet a quota of $10 in order to pro- vide enough funds for the prom. These fun- filled money-raising ideas were a prelude to the big night. These Cherished Moments was the theme of this year ' s Junior Prom, April 27, 1968. We hope we ' ve been successful in mak- ing this the best Junior prom John Rogers has ever known, but we hope to be even more successful in the upcoming year, stated Dennis Ashley, Junior Class presi- dent. A short chat before the Junior Prom. 157 One of the highlights of each year is graduation. This is a time of fulfillment, joy and sorrow. It is the fulfillment and joy of having gone through twelve long years of schooling and the sorrow of leaving old ex- periences. For some, this is the summit of their for- mal schooling, but for most a jumping off point to further learning and achievement. On May 29, 1968, at the Spokane Coli- seum, 492 seniors received their diplomas, issuing them into the world of individual re- sponsibility. These seniors have now left the world of adolescence behind. Some will meet the test life has put before them; oth- ers may not. However, on this date they graduated as brothers in anticipation of what the future holds for them. Seniors always cutting up. This is the way we know them. Graduation They ' re supposed to be dancing. Dances Reflect Large Participation An essential part of any dance is the decorations. Right, John? A dance wouldn ' t be complete without the beat. Go, Larson, go! 160 Students at Rogers look forward to the many dances sponsored by student organizations. Most dances are sponsored by the ASB dance com- mittee. Chairman of the dances this year was Karen Drovdahl. Some of the many fine dances sponsored by the ASB committee were: Sadie Hawkins, Harvest Moon, Christ- mas Dance and the Inaugural Ball. In the spring, Pirettes Drill Team sponsored the tradi- tional Roaring Twenties dance. Pep Club, Girls ' League and Boys ' Federation also sponsored dances, which served as a very enjoyable part of the activities during the year. Students enjoy the Christmas dance. Shake A Leg 163 1967 Football Season Bob Lundstrom John Minetti Dan Wakeley Mike Kondo Head Coach Larry Coleman ' s 1967-68 football team produced four all-city team choices this year. Bob Lundstrom was chosen for the Spokane Chronicle ' s first team, with Dan Wakeley and John Minetti gaining spots on the second team. Switching some- what, Minetti made the Spokesman-Review ' s first team while Lundstrom and Wakeley and outstanding junior, Mike Kondo were placed on the Review ' s second team. Injuries, which plagued the larger part of the Pirates, severely hurt an already small team. Even so.the boys who were not expected to do very well in pre-season forecasts, maintained a 2nd place in the league standings throughout most of the year. A fine backfield composed of juniors replaced the injured seniors: First string fullback Greg Foland, out with a dislocated shoulder, Mark Kondo, first string right end, with a broken leg, and Dan Wakeley, a first string quarterback, sprained a nkle. Wrestling is a game that gives every boy regardless of size or ability the opportunity ■for self-expression on an athletic field of physical combat. From the smallest 103 pound contestant to the giant heavyweight every boy learns a variety of wrestling maneuvers and adopts these techniques and skills that he can perfect according to his own ability. The Pirate Wrestling team of 1968 was entirely deserving of the City-League Cham- pionship. Every boy who was a member of the team willingly accepted the discipline and sacrifice asked by his coaches. Every boy extended himself to the limit of his ability from the fourth stringer to the tournament team. The championship was inevitable with such dedication. We are a very proud team. We are also very appreciative of the honor of being champions. Coach Ken Pelo Mark Kondo, District Champion and second place state winner, en route to pin over CV opponent. Gymnastics is for all who share the belief that physical education achieves its great- est significance and importance when viewed, not only as a means for building muscle, but as an important factor contributing to the development of mental alertness and creative initiative, and in many ways enhancing the confidence and all-around growth of the individual. Gymnastics rapid rise to favor among students and educators has resulted from the discovery that the gymnastics program offers so much in the way of personal growth. —Mr. Clary Wright 189 In Memoriam Neil E. McDaniel The highlights of the 1 967- ' 68 school year were dimmed by the death of Neil E. Mc- Daniel. As the result of a gymnastic accident, Neil died January 25, 1968. Affectionately known as Mort by his family and close friends, Neil was a well- known student at Rogers. He attended Whitman Elementary and John A. Shaw Jr. High School before coming to Rogers. Neil was a letterman on the Rogers gymnastic team. He was head photographer for the Rogers Record and Treasure Chest staff. He participated in Sing-Out Spokane, and he was also an enthusiastic member of the Civil Defense Patrol. He actively partici- pated in youth groups in Hillyard Church of Sod and the Hillyard Christian Church. The unspoken question: Why? This was on the lips of many Rogers students when they realized Neil would not return to school. Although he attended Rogers only a short while, the memory of Neil McDaniel will live on. 190 1967 City Champions In a season replete with medals, ribbons and trophies, the Rogers ' cross-country teams, Varsity and B-Squad, swept through the opposition with perfect records in local competition. The season was culminated for the Varsity by a third place finish at the state cham- pionship race in Seattle after victories in the Shadle Highlander Invitational, the EWSC Invitational, the University of Idaho Invitational, All-City (and District) Championships, and the Inland Empire AAU Cross-Country Championships, as well as five regular season dual meets. Awesome in their remarkable consistency in running as a pack behind the individual ability of Bob Isitt and Gary Johnson were: Jim Isitt (the sole junior on the Varsity) and seniors Mark Updike, Ben Inman, Jack Rutter and Alan Olson. Also noteworthy were the consistently high finishes of juniors Randy Cartwright, Denny Deahl and sophomore Jerry Krogel in B Squad Competition. Coach James P. Jane 73 Zwarg, Janet 93 I will remember this year and this book with a mixture of feelings. The layouts, the slow process, the tragic loss of an inspiring staff member are not pleasant to recall. However, the book is finished and it has given the members of the staff a wonderful sense of accomplishment knowing that the strengthen- ing ideals of Rogers have been presented to the student body in this yearbook. Our theme of: the past equals the future gives the idea of a students ' life at Rogers. The past experiences we have encounter- ed; the red locks, the pep cons, even the rousing orations by Mr. Swisher, our advisor, have their own way of preparing us for our future goals. John R. Rogers High School has been, is, and always will greatly influence the lives of its students, so that their pasts may always lead to their well-deserved futures. Most Sincerely, Helene Hink, Editor in chief Treasure Chest DOWNTOWN SPOKANE PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 7413 30817368 3
