Rogan in Ike COWWZMWZD! All aboard on the Jolly Ship Rogers was heard several months ago, and now the time is nearing when the ship will be docked, never again to take to sea its graduating seniors. This yearbook is dedicated to the seniors who will be venturing into a new life to represent Rogers in thesCommunity,', which was chosen by this year's staff as the theme for your 1960 Treasure Chest. We have been most fortunate this term to have an opportunity to feature color in our book. The theme, as mentioned above, is carried out by the abstract design on the cover, in certain printed messages and in lavish division-page color. Our first scene is of the fountain and floral beauty in beautiful Manito park. The teachers, knowledge, wisdom and concern for students is an ever-flowing process, as is the fountain. They supply us with the water of knowledge and wisdom, satisfying our own thirst for it is largely a matter of taking a drink. The winter picture taken from the top of Mount Spokane is especially symbolic of our seniors who have reached the peak of their high school education. The hills in the back- ground represent the further goals of our graduates. Some of these hills may be steep, rocky and rugged. They are in the picture of life as a challenge. In the words of Douglas Mallock, we offer this verse for thought: The hills ahead look hard and steep and high, And often we behold them with a sigh, But as we near them, level grows the road, We find on every slope, with every load, The climb is not so steep, the top so far, The hills ahead look harder than they are. The classes are illustrated in a near-by scene showing a path leading upward to the summit of a high hill. It is well to remember that, if one advances confidently in the direc- tion of his dreams and endeavors to live a life established upon solid principles, it is quite probable he will successfully reach his goal. The Spokane night scene has been selected to represent our activity section. just as our community is humming with activities-day and night-so should we be active, in reason- able measure, in the extra-curricular affairs our school provides. The beauty of Spokane has been further enhanced by the recent construction of Recre- ation park. The typical American is a sportsman, and he believes in sportsmanship. The good high school will, in its athletic program, teach perseverance, courage and character, among other things. A young athlete, boy or girl, must learn to keep his poise and carry himself on a high level of conduct at all times while in vigorous competition. He must strive to excell but also to realize that what counts most is not that he won or lost-but how he played the game. Yes, this is your 1960 Treasure Chest, primarily dedicated to the idea of your place in the community-individually and collectively-now and in the future. We sincerely hope that you, as one of the Rogers crew, find this book an adequate treasury of memories, of a pleasant and profitable voyage. Lynda Pagnotta, Editor.
