PIRETTES The history of the Pirettes begins with the old Hillyard high school. Beth Noben was the very first Pirate Girl. She led songs during her senior year, using a small replica of the baton used by J. M. Tewinkel. The first Pirate Girls did not march, but just led songs. Evelyn Miranda, who is now book clerk at Rogers, was an outstanding Pirate Girl for three semesters. The group gradually grew until there were six song leaders. In 1935 it was decided to enlarge the group to include a marching unit, and twenty-five girls were chosen from a large number of volunteers. They formed various letters on the football field between halv es of the games and did marching drills. Practice was held each morning before school. In 193(i it was decided to combine the forty-eight Pirettes with the band, making a marching unit of ninety-eight to parade and perform at games. Marialese Kller was the drum major last fall. Glenn B. Starr started the uniformed marching of the Pirettes and the hand, and Miss Thelnia Thome, home economics teacher at Rogers, assisted with tilt- colorful uniforms. Rogers ' second score came early in the third quarter when Leavitt flipped a pass to Akins. who streaked down the side lines to score standing up. Randolph converted. ROGERS ( : NORTH CENTRAL 0 Rogers opened the city series race by trouncing the North Central Indians (i to 0 on the Indians ' gridiron. September 24. On the opening kickoff. Xear the end of the game Rogers ' passing attack started working, and Halch, receiving Tortorelli ' s bullet-like pass, stepped over the goal line for a touchdown. ROGERS 20: LEWIS AM) CLARK 0 On the home field. October 1. Coach Hendele ' s Buccaneers raced through the Lewis and Clark Tigers to a 20 to 0 victory. Early in the first quarter L.
