4 -V_, TO EVER YTHING THERE IS A SEASON . . . THE 68 TIGER ROGERS JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CANTON, MISSISSIPPI EDITOR, EMOGENE JOHNSON ASSISTANT EDITOR, MARTHA ALEXANDER FOREWORD THE TIGER is a symbol of all the accomplishments that were achieved across the seasons. We hope that as you look through the pages of this book, they will bring back memories of those who worked for these accomplishments and enjoyment to those who observe them. May you receive much pleasure from viewing our annual. CONTENTS Introduction Administration Faculty Classes Sports Organizations Activities Advertisements DEDICA TION Mrs. Marie Stringfellow spent six of her teaching years at Rogers High School as advisor to the TIGER staff. Trying and tiring as the publications have been, she never relinquished her pursuit to publish an annual that vould live long in the hearts of the Rogers Family. Thus, the annual of 1968 shall serve as a means of expression - i our love and gratitude to you for your guidance and devotion to us in previous years. We dedicate the 1968 edition of the TIGER to you, Mrs Marie Stringfellow, as a tribute for your faithful- less, loyalty and untiring dedication to the youth of J adison County SCENES OF THE VISITING COMMITTEE ' S REPORT i o the Administration, Parents, and Rogers Family: This message is to express formal appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the Self- Study of Rogers Junior-Senior High School during ' the 1967-68 school term. Without your genuine interest and concern for the up-grading of Rogers High School, our dreams of accredi- tation would have been virtiftilly impossible. May our joining of many wills and strengths bring forth the fruits of a new and stronger foundation for our future posterity Thanks to everyone . Yours truly, Steering Committee glg u A DMINISTRA TION s PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE During the 1967-68 session, time and events brought the Rogers Junior-Senior High School face-to-face with the greatest challenge in its history. We were challenged by the standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to extend our horizons, set new goals, substantiate our philosophy through well-defined aims, objec-- tives and educational practices. Our Self-Evaluation was the most revealing and rewarding experience ever for the principal, faculty, students, parents, and laymen of the Rogers High School community. I take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to each individual and agency who helped to make our efforts to become a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and School a real success. I highly commend the Annual Staff for this most outstanding publication. Certainly, this represents many hours of hard work-planning, collecting and arranging such a wonderful display of many of our educational activities. Surely this publication of the TIGER will stand out as a Special in the hearts and minds of those who shared the toils and blessings of this session. Z ruc X Xi2-iyit iy ' ' jf.d . THE VICE-PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE The 1967-68 school term has been an interesting and exciting session for the Rogers family. In this family ach member has made many contributions to help equip one for society, but we still have unfinished work and many contributions to make. During our planning in the Rogers family, we stress that no individual should idle away his time. Our plan- ning provides organized sequences of courses, including courses for advanced pupils and for under-achievers. We constantly evaluate the Program of Studies to determine what modifications are heeded to meet the changing needs of our students. The significant factor is that we strive to develop the student physically, socially, mentally and emotion- ally to the maximum of his interest and capacity. Further, we stress that individuals should not be educated for the individual ' s sake but one should be prepared to make a contribution to society. ,3f .. MOORE ;ss Education CLASSES SENIORS STUDENT OF THE YEAR STUDENT OF THE YEAR, an honor, was bestowed upon Martha Alexander, a senior at Rogers High School, May, 1967. Though this came as a surprise to Martha, it should not have been, because across the years her only aspirations have been achievments and success. Martha is a well-rounded person: spiritually, socially and intellectually. Her philosophy embodies the idea tliat success through honor does not determine the individual, but the obstacles he has overcome in reaching this success. For eight years she has been a member of the Rogers Family. During this time her endeavors have not all been easy, however, there were times of triumph. For seven consecutive years she has been an honor student; for two consecutive years she won honors in the Department of Science. She was chosen by one of the local clubs, the Elks, to speak in an Oratorical Contest, where she placed first in the local and second in the district. In May 1967, she was elected President of the Student Government Association. During her Presidency she has tried continuously to uphold this great task by dedicating her time and service. Martha ' s ambition is to further her education in some university of higher learning. u ADAMS, EDWIN N. J. R. O. T. C, Sr. Honor Society. R Club, Choir, Hi-Y, Baseball Team. Autlior: J. The degree of success that was achieved can be contributed to those outstanding seniors who led the way for the inexperienced players. So far this year the Tigers have defeated Brandon Carter, 70-56, and 46-45; Jackson Brinkley, 70-58; McComb Higgins, 88-53 and 91-63; Greenwood Threadgill, 95-73; Greenville Weston, 119-105; Greenville O ' Barmon, 79-78. Vicksburg Temple handed the Tigers their lone defeat, 78-62, in the finals of the Tip-Off Tourna- ment at Jackson State in mid-November. Team statistician Danny Tucker ' s records show that the starting five are shooting 555o in field goals and 60% in free throws. Tiger Roland Garrett leads the team with 26 points and 19 rebounds per game. Others with a scoring average in double figures include Albert Porter, 14; J. T. McMurtry, 14; Robert Miller, 11; and Emmitt Chamber, 11. J. T. Murtry plays outstanding defensive ball; blocking shots and grabbing re- bounds, particularly in clutch plays. Coach Tevester Anderson, assisted by Coach Rudolph Williams, counts heavily on bench support. Willie Earl Zoo McNeill, Charles Chuck Smith, Lawrence Mayberry, and Julius Branch have seen action in everv game. Other reserves seeing action include Arthur Harris, James White, Billy Freeman, and Charlie Evans. ROLAND GARRETT- ALL-AMERICAN -ROGERS ' FIRST HIGH SCHOOL Roland Garrett completed one of the most successful high school basketball careers in the state of Mississippi by being named to the High School AU-American Team of 1968. Roland, an honor student at RHS, is the son of Mr. Mrs. Coleman Garrett. In his senior year, Roland averaged 26 points and 19 reboxmds per game on a team that was outstanding in its balanced attack and overall team efforts. Under the tutelage of Coach Tevester Anderson, Roland became one of the most sought-after college prospects in the history of the school. Roland was also listed as All-Big 8, All District and All-State. As a junior he was named Honorable Mention AU-American. Roland and the other members of the team carried Rogers through a most successful season in 1968. The Junior Varsity, coached by R. T. Williams, has compiled a 4-1 record for the early ' 67- ' 68 season. The team, haying only two players who have had experience in playing organized basketball, is rather young. So far, the team has won the annual Tri-County Tip-Off Tournament held at Greer High School in Thomastown, Mississippi. The team ' s co-captains are Johnnie Grant and Richard Thompson. Curtis Dillion has shown himself to be the team ' s best scorer with an average of eighteen points per game; mean while, Tommie Wilson leads in rebounds with an average of fourteen rebounds per game. The players have displayed good morale as well as good potentials; therefore, I say, Run, children, (_J?-« - - X q . So far, they have played six games. They lost the firet four games by a total of 20 points. This just show:i that the Tigerettes was defeated by a total average of 20 points, overall. As the season wears on the Tigerettes are showing tremendous improvement in weak areas, and they will try to improve the present record which is 4 losses and 2 wins. Under the auspices of Co-Captains. Betty Collins and Hattie Deere, everyone can look for a revived Tigerette team for 1967-1968. Coach: Miss Melba Ward Assistant Coach: Mr. T. Championship! exclaims the members of the 67-68 baseball team. A few months ago these same members would not have uttered these stricking words because they faced a problem of an inexper- ienced infield. But the Tigers are proud to say at present that this problem has been greatly subdued. This problem is solved, but the Tigers paid the price while solving it. This is shown in their last years record. Our glance at the future is far better than our recollection of the past. We now possess a strong infield, three consistent hitters: Percy Meeks, Arthur Harris, and Ruben Myers, and three pitchers who can really toe the hill : C a ry Johnson, Edwin Adams, and Fred Jackson. With this kind of material at hand, a championship must be our goal. STUDENT CO UNCIL LIBRARY GUILD mM }h( 82 HI-Y PURPOSE: To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian character. SLOGAN: Pure words, pure thoughts, pure actions. PRAYER: We praise thee, O God, for our Hi-Y Boys and coimselors, for their desire to be of service in this world we seek to build. May our love for thee awaken in us an overflowing love for all thy creatures. May our spirit of adventure lead us only in the trail once blazed by thee. For this, give us thy help. It takes endurance, determination, patience and work to produce a book worth viewing. I can truly say that this year ' s staff has tried to produce a book that the student body will be proud to call a yearbook and will cherish forever. Education is our goal here at Rogers. The TIGER STAFF has tried to publish a book that is educational and at the same time enjoyable. We sincerely hope that you enjoy the products of your school as depicted in the 1968 TIGER.
