In fact, we came to Rogers together for our freshman year, the fall of 1970. We were both a little bewildered by the size, the crowded conditions, the schedule and by the over-all business of the prob¬ lem we faced as freshman. In the case of this writer, he was more frightened and bewildered than were the members of the class of ' 74. This writer would like to express his thanks to the Class of ' 74 for the following: 1. They gave inspiration and helped him to overcome some of the problems he faced. 2. They showed great spirit and pride in their Rogers High School and have main¬ tained that spirit for four years. 3. They showed that they were mature young adults in the way they adjusted to a tough schedule and in the way they helped solve many of our problems. 4. They have provided Rogers with great student leadership. Thank you Class of ' 74 for being a great class and one that Rogers can well be proud of. J.W. Parsons, Principal School spirit was the key phrase this year. And Rogers pride seemed to be up higher than in recent years. Mr. Booth (shown opposite page, center) commented, Yes, I think feelings about school are good this year. Students are in a special state of mina, more serene, more tranquil. I think any Rogers faculty person can tell you this. I ' ve talked with teachers and administrators from other buildings around the city and around the state. They generally feel that on college and high school campuses, students are focusing on themselves and their school rather than on world and social problems. This return to pride in school shows irf many small ways here at Rogers. Games, pep-ral¬ lies, dances, and other special assemblies su ch as the Tree-Fare rock group, were all highly attended. Take the Cystic Fibrosis benefit game and dance, for example. Not only did Rogefs students and faculty raise over $1000.00 aol- lars, but the sock hop afterwards was good, clean fun. Several faculty members recalled fights and provocations in the past years. This year, energy was all released in dancing and having a good time. The whole posture of the school seems to be different this year. There have been less complaints about the split schedule, with more acceptance and cooperation. You can even notice it in the halls. People aren ' t as quickly irritated, and as a result, it ' s fun to go to school. In sum, everyone seems more at peace with themselves and their environ¬ ment. Much of the credit for the success of this team should go to the so-called 2nd line runners who worked for improved perfor¬ mances each week to pick up the slack for their missing teammates. Co-Captain, Brian Hoch was the only one of the top three who competed in all 12 meets this season. I think that Brian ' s attitude and hard work provided the inspiration for our entire team. His inspiration and their perspiration produced some exceptional team performances. That second pack of ours: Roger Newman, Gary Gregory, John Holloman, Duane Prosser, Bob Morris and Duane jendrzejak, really made progress as the season moved along. They realized that if the team was to have any success, each of them had to run as close to their potential as possible. I was really proud of the way they accepted the challenge when things looked bad because of all our injuries. The only thing 1 regret about this season is the fact that no one will ever know just how good this team really was. Sure, we accomplished something never done at Rogers before (like qualifying our team for the District Meet,) but we never had our entire team run together until the next to last meet of the season! We just ran out of time to get the things done we hoped to do. Coach Renaux Not to be overlooked however, is the fact that our jV team was also the best we have ever had. They will be counted on heavily next year, since we lose three top seniors, including: our 1972 Most Valuable Run¬ ner, Rick Hutchinson; our 1973 Most Valuable Run¬ ner, Brian Hoch; and our 1973 Most Improved Run¬ ner, John Holloman. jV runners this year included: Jeff Bruner, Steve Combs,, Ron Rooney, Walt Op- dycke. Chip Holden, Dave Burgoon, Mark Douglas, jerry Erard and Glen Williams. Next year ' s team will be led by Mark Butler and Roger Newman, who were selected as co-captains. They follow in the footsteps of Rick and Brian, who captained our teams for the past two seasons. Both of these young men have contributed so much to our program the past 4 years that it will be diffi¬ cult to replace them. In my estimation, they have stood for what Rogers Cross Country is all about. What the team lacked in size and numbers, they made up for with great determination and hard work. With the exception of the Devilbiss and Cardinal Stritch games, they were ' in ' every ball game. Injuries played a prime role midway through the season, with three seniors — Mike Bruner, Mike Siefert, and Jeff Moon — suf¬ fering injuries that took them from the line-up for the remainder of the year. Tim Kutz and Ken Knepper were chosen by their teammates as the outstanding players of the year. They gave tremendous effort in every contest, many times play¬ ing with painful injuries. VARSITY BASKET¬ BALL In a rebuilding season, the Rogers Rams showed signs of greatness as well as frus¬ trations. In a 5-12 season, 7 games were lost by less than 5 points. Several of these losses were caused by poor foul-shooting. For example, in one close game, we missed around 20 foul shots. Lack of a leader, inconsistent defense, and poor rebounding were other reasons for setbacks. To bring a winning season to Rogers, the Rams will have to put all aspects of the game together as a team. Eight juniors and one sophomore were active in varsity games. If playing experience is the key future victory, the Rams are in good shape. What the junior Varsity team lacked in victories, it made up for in deter¬ mination and hard work. This squad of underclassmen gained valuable ex¬ perience and showed true Rogers spirit by working well together throughout the year. The high point of the season was a hard fought win over Central. If this year ' s squad continued to im¬ prove, they should be worthy assets to next year ' s varsity team. First Year J.V. The players all worked at the game with enthu¬ siasm and spirit, but were unable to put together two good halves of basketball. Sports 87 ©nmE,©’ It was a good season although the record does not reflect it. Everyone played and worked as a team. They laughed, fought, and cried together. The girls and their coach are looking forward to the prospects of next sea¬ son as many of the present team mem¬ bers are returning. The team was two- thirds freshman and many of them had playing time, so experience is coming. It will be rough, but I think we will have a better season next year. That ' s what we ' re shooting for. In what was expected to be just another good year, the team sur¬ passed all of the coaches expectations and compiled an 8-1 dual meet season, high¬ lighted by a 26-19 victory over St. Francis, which snapped their 122 match winning streak. Head Coach Steely and Trainer Mr. Mash The Rams were highly successful in tourna¬ ments — winning the First Annual Rogers Invitational Holiday Tournament, the Perry- burg Invitational, and finishing third in the City Tournament. In the next three weeks they will compete in the Sectional, District, and State Tourna¬ ments. Crystal Mrs. Settles BUSINESS ADVISOR The 1974 Rogerian can in essence be compared to an apple! This volume represents the fruit of the labors of the staff and advisors. Like an apple seed, the yearbook needed to be nurtured by the creative ideas, abilities, and efforts of thirty young people. The advisors were the symbol of the stem, from which came the nourishment that enabled the fruit to mature and ripen. The core resulted, being a collection of memorabilia, a history of many happenings from our school year, the real substance of the book. Partake! We hope you find it shiny, crisp, and delicious. It is surprising how many people have contributed to this volume, both directly and indirectly. I thank them all. I especially thank those who helped more directly: School Advisors who cared about their activity; Coaches who gave assistance in coverage of their sport; Mr. Dave Heitzman from Powell ' s, for his color photography; Mr. Sid Rodeheffer from Josten ' s Yearbook Company; Mrs. Nancy Settles, money-keeper„bill-sender, and business advisor; and the members of the Rogerian Staff, especially Carolyn Bishop, Chris Johnstone, typist Sue Myer, graduate Mike Crosby, and those others who put in untold extra hours. Very special thanks goes to Mary Jo Sinclair (and Mr. John Nicholson,) for artistic design of our cover and division | pages.
