Conflict arose when bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and maintenance personnel requested school board recognition of their newly selected union, the Indiana State Teachers Association. We are on strike because the administration failed to honor our request, Michigan City Classified President Jack Siddall said. HThey refused us the right to choose who we wanted to sit in on negotiations. We'II stay out as Iong as it takes. Attendance throughout the 21-day strike ranged from 20 to 30 per cent. The strike ended September 20 when Judge Raymond Fox in a permanent injunction ordered the schooI board to negotiate with the Classified Association and the bargaining representative of their choice and to refrain from any reprisals. Families were responsible for arranging private transportation. Students endured the traffic back- ups and arrived at schooI in cars and taxis, on foot and on horseback. Although school conditions were difficult and at times depressing, students survived the strike. The Board, by a 4-3 vote, has decided to appeal the judge's decision. 2-3.
