Sue McConnaughey, jo Belle Hailey, Kay Calvin, Ginger Dean, Barbara Kelly. The Rogers High School Band, directed by George M. Fentem, is com- posed of fifty-four members and embraces grades seven through twelve. The band, which is in the building stage at present, is trying to work into a more balanced instrumentation than that represented at this time, and headway in this direction is being made. We hope to be able to divide into a junior and senior band at the beginning of the 1957-58 school term. The band usually makes six trips each year: Band Day at the University, Bi-State marching and concert Festivals at Fort Smith, Christmas parade at Joplin, Missouri, and two out of town football games. From the band 42 members were chosen as the Marching Band. This band marched in all parades and marching festivals, and put on a half-time show at all home football games. They took first place in the Joplin Christmas Parade this year and second place last year. They placed second division in the Bi-State Marching Festival the past two years. The band gives two concerts each year and combines with the chorus for the Christmas assembly program. Mr. Fentem is also director of the chorus. The music department furnishes music for civic clubs and other organizations desiring musical numbers on their programs. Sponsored By DR. AND MRS. C. A. Summary Of The Season By Jackie Smith The fighting Mountaineers of 1956 started the new season with an impressive 15-6 victory over the highly favored Bentonville Tigers. Rogers got off to a slow start, but livened up after the Tigers made their lone touchdown in the second quarter. When the Tigers kicked off, McConnaughey caught the ball and sprint- ed up the sideline for a 95 yard touchdown. The Mountaineers came back strong in the second half to score again when McConnaug- hey tallied his second touchdown to end the game 13-6. The Mountaineers played Neosho, Missouri, September 14. Rogers outscored the Wildcats 36-26 with McConnaughey scoring 4 TD's. This gave the Mounties another victory making it two straight. In the first IAA contest of the season the Mountaineers went down before the powerful Van Buren Pointers 19-0. Rogers seemed to lack the kind of spirit that was shown earlier in the season. The Fayetteville game was a duplicate of the Van Buren game. The Bulldogs outplayed the Mounties all through the game, coming out on top 26-7. The next Friday night the Mountaineers played the Huntsville Eagles, at Huntsville. The Mounties did something they had not done in many years. They played to a thrilling 0-0 draw. Although both teams got inside the 10 yard line, they were unable to score. In the next game the Mountaineers were out to win. They had lost two home games already, and were up against their third. They surprised the odd-makers when they trounced the Subiaco Trojans, 14-0. The Subiaco game was one of the most important games of the season. The Baylor University band entertained at the half-time intermission. McConnaughey ran for one TD, and passed to end Steve Roberts for the other. The Mountaineers played Harrison, before a rainsoaked Homecoming crowd on Oct. 19. The Mounties played good ball, until the Golden Goblins found a fault in the Mounties pass defense, and completed a touchdown pass, to win the game 7-0. This was 5 out of 4 conference games the Mounties had lost. The Mountaineers wouldn't let a loss slow them down, as they came back to whip the Springdale Bulldogs 41-0, in their second IAA victory. McConnaughey again went on a scor- ing spree to score four TD's. The Springdale game was a morale booster for the Mountain- eers, as they went ahead to win their next and last two ballgames. They defeated the Siloam Springs Panthers 25-7, and the following week shattered the Berryville Bobcats 45-13, on Dad's Night. MOUNTAINEER SCHEDULE Rogers ................ 13 Bentonville ..... The starting men were as follows: Right end, Steve Roberts, right tackle, jackie Smith, right guard, Bill Knoepfle, center, john Winchester, 'left guard, Jim Clayton, left tackle, Roger Greenlee, left end, Owen Anderson, Quarterback, Bill Green, left half, Ted McConnaughey, right half, john Kistler, and Fullback, Leroy Whisen- hunt. Alternates of this team were Jack Wass- man, left end, and Curtis Bequette, right half- back. McConnaughey started the scoring with a 5 yard plunge, and Bill Green followed with a quarterback sneak. Curtis tallied two for the night, one on a 5 yard run and the other on a pass from Green. Whisenhunt sprinted 30 yards for the fifth TD of the night. jackie Smith raced 90 yards for the last one. The Mountaineers rounded out the season with an impressive 6-3-1 season record. Coaches Sutton and Beisel and the entire Mountaineer squad should be commended for this fine job.
