K irksey The Building Zin iliilemnriam The Rogers Public School and the cause of education in this entire area lost a great friend with the passing of Birch L. Kirksey last fall. For nearly a quarter of a century he has, as superintendent of Rogers school system, been largely respon- sible for its expansion in both a scholastic and physical way. The ad- vancements made are a reflection of his untiring efforts in behalf of the young people whose interests he ser- ved. As an educator and as a friend it was a privilege to know him, and he shall not be forgotten. They held the first Thanks- giving Not like the ones we know. They gathered 'not to feast On turkey or mince pieg Their purpose was to thank God For his blessings from the sky. Why have people changed it To a day of feast and game? Has not He blessed us also? Are not our blessifngs the same? Why merely envy Pilgrims And their day so long ago? My day can be the very same If I but make it so. With Thanksgiving In Our Hearts By Marilyn Hathaway Our day of Thanksgiving, in which Americans take time from their everyday activities to thank God, will soon be here. We Americans have much to be thankful for: our five great free- doms expressed in the Consitutiong our privilege of enjoying a football game as our cheeks grow rosy in the crisp autumn airg our right to choose our occupationsg all of these and many more. Often we take our rights and privileges for granted, not stopping to consider how we have received them. Our forefathers could not comprehend how mighty this country would some day become, 'nor of the great task it would be to estab- lish the wonderful nation we have now. They participated in that first Thanksgiving feast with reverence and thanks in their hearts for their wonderful crops and their exemption from the persecution which they had witnessed in their native lands. Wanting to share the happiness they felt with everyone, they invited the Indians to join them. Let us sit down to our own tables this Thanksgiving Day with thanksgiving in our hearts. Sa myth Serum The fighting Mountaineers kicked off their season with a decisive 20-O victory over the Bentonville Tigers. The first Rogers tally was made early in the second quarter when quarterback, Ralph Gibson, passed to Mountie end, Mark Davidson, who r,omped 90 yards for a touchdown. In the third period Rogers started a long drive, and Gibson went over from the 2-yard line. In the fourth quarter swift Mountie quarterback, Ferrell, scored from the one yard line. The Mountaineers ran their second straight victory when they tote into the Neosho eleven and turned them every way but loose as they won 28-13. The Mounties played a much better game than their opponents but failed to score until the third quarter. Long drives were made during the entire ball game. The first score was made when Gibson went over from the nine. The second touchdown was made in the third period when Easterling scored COACH MATTHEWS, COACH SUTTON from the 22 yard line. In the same period, Teddy McConnaughey scored the third Rogers touchdown barrelling over from DEI-MAR FERKELL- MARK DAVIDSON the 19 yard stripe. The final tally was C0-Captain! made by Mountie end, Steve Roberts, as he plunged over from the 19 yard stripe. The Mountaineers took it on the chin as they went down to defeat to the mighty Van Buren Pointers in their first District IAA meet. Rogers' only tally came in the closing minutes of the third quarter following a sustained drive started on their own 26 yard line. Gibson scored from the one foot line and the gun sounded with the score standing 21-6. The Fayetteville game was a very hard one for the Mountaineers. The Fayetteville line and Billy Whitefield were too much for the Mountaineers in their conference tilt with a 13-6 defeat. The Mountie tally came late in the first quarter when the Mountaineers covered a Bulldog fumble deep in Fayetteville territory and marched goalward with McConnaughey climaxing the drive with a two yard plunge and the touchdown. The Mountaineer Homecoming game was a success with a 41-13 victory over the Huntsville Eagles. Rex Easter- ling was high scorer and played a brilliant game while Mark Davidson was a standout on defense. Roberts, Epps, and Gibson scored one touchdown each to finish the scoring for the Mounties. A power-laden Subiaco Trojan eleven smothered a hapless Mountaineer bid for victory with a 31-0 shellacking at Paris, Arkansas. A strong and inspired-Mountaineer eleven downed an almost equally inspired Goblin team 41-13. Gibson, Rob- erts, and McConnaughey shared the scoring honors. Co-Captain Mark Davidson kicked two extra points to round out the scoring for Rogers. One of the most thrilling games ever played on the Rogers gridiron was the game with the Springdale Bulldogs. The Mountaineers played their best and most spirited game of the season. The Bulldogs pulled the game out of the fire in the final seconds with a pass play from johnson to Delozier good for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Mounties' only tally came in the second period when Jackie Smith went over from one yard out. The final score, 12-7. The Mountaineers defeated the Siloam Springs Panthers in a close and hard fought game, 12-7. Gibson to Anderson pass play started the attack covering 33 yards set up the first Rogers' tally when McConnaughey scored from the five. On the return kickoff, lineman Alvis Smith intercepted a screen pass in the Panther secondary and raced 30 yards for a TD. The season ended with a victory over the Sequoyah Indians 38-0 on the home field. The whole team saw much action against the Indians. The scoring was shared among different members of the team.
