Coach Matthews. ootball Team The fighting Mountaineers of 1954 started the new season with an unimpres- sive 6-0 victory over the Bentonville Tigers. Rogers played a great defensive game, but their offense refused to roll, and they tallied only once when Gibson passed to end Alvin Ball in the end zone after the first few minutes of the third quarter. The Mountaineers ran their victories to 2 straight when they met and defeated the Monett Cubs on their home field Sept. 17. The Mounties played a much more impres- sive game and threatened many times, but failed to score until the third period when Gibson passed to Douglas Jackson for the T. D. mah, ' RALPH GIBSON All-District JACK DEASON DALE WEBSTER All-District-Lineman of the week All-District-Lineman of the week ALVIN BALL REX EASTERLING Lineman of the week Lineman of the week The Mountaineers broke their winning streak and went down to defeat before the might of the Van Buren Pointers in their first District 1AA contest. The Pointers, air supremacy was too great, and the Mounties tallied only twice in a 13-52 defeat. Touchdowns were made when Rogers started a long drive and Gibson went over from the one. McConnaughey made a flashy 40 yard run in the fourth quarter. The Fayetteville game was a duplicate of the Van Buren gameg the Bulldogs, heavier and more experienced, led by tailback Stone, defeated the Mountaineers in a hard fought game 31-0. In the Huntsville game the team had very low morale, and the Mounties were over-thrown 26-0. The Mountaineers were plagued by fumbles all evening, most of them coming at crucial times when they were near the goal line. Homecoming saw the Mountaineers go down to defeat again. The Subiaco Trojans, who finished second in the district, were too much for the Mounties in a 33-6 defeat. The game was full of long runs on the part of the Trojans, and Rogers scored only once when Gibson passed to Smith in the first quarter. The spirited Rogers team played one of their finest games in winning their third victory of the year 19-6 from Harrison. The Mounties commanded from the very first with Gibson passing to Davidson for a TD in the second quarter. A 40 yard touchdown pass from Gibson to Ferrell was called back just before the half. Gibson scored in the third period and Easterling in the fourth. The Mountaineers played their best game of the year against the favored Springdale Bulldogs and defeated them 12-7 at Springdale in a District IAA contest. The Mountaineers played their most spirited game, which they had to fight for to the very end. The longest and most exciting run of the year came in the first quarter when Gayle Vick raced 61 yards down the side-lines. Springdale held a one point lead until the last two minutes, when Smith took a screenpass and raced 50 yards to the two where Gibson went over with the winning TD. Rogers defeated the Siloam Springs Panthers in a close aerial attack 27-19. Rogers started the game with a bang scoring two T.D.s in the first quarter. Vick went over followed by a pass from Gibson to Davidson, but they slowed down and Siloam scored twice in the second quarter. Rogers again scored twice in the third period on two long passes from Gibson to Stevie Roberts. t The season ended with a victory over the Sequoyah Indians 19-0 on the Rogers home field. The whole team saw action against the Indians. Gibson scored twice in the first half and jackie Smith who played a sparkling game, scored in the second half. Coachef and Co-Capminr.
