Don, an eighth grade student, lost his life in a motor bike accident on December 29, 1953. Don was a friendly boy, well liked by his fellow students and teachers. He was an alert boy, regular in attendance, courteous and prompt. His grades were average, and he was very much interested in reading. His main interest seemed to be mechanics. He displayed much common sense and could often answer questions about every day things of which the average eighth grade pupil knows Iittle. -The Mountaineer Uanuary 29, '54j published by the Journalism Depart- ment of Rogers High School. The commercial students organized a club known as the B.E.C. in 1951. ln 1952 the club was active and carried on much work as stenographic services for the faculty at examination times. The B.E.C. affiliated with the National Future Business Leaders of 'America and received their local charter No. 836 on April 21, 1953. The formal installation of officers was held at Lake Atalanta under the sponsorship of Rogers Business and Professional Women's Club on April 24, 1953. At that time there were only six active F.B.L.A. Clubs in Arkansas. Today there are fourteen active clubs and the Rogers Chapter is taking an active part in helping to organize a state F.B.l.A. Membership in this club is open to any student with one or more semesters of credit in business subiects. At present there are twenty-six active members. Formal installation for the fall semester officers was held in the Home Econamic's cottage on December 10, 1953. Janice Skelton, president, Ruth Green, first vice- president, Annabelle McDougal, second vice-president, Shirlene Broyles, secretary, Sylvia Pearl, treasurer: Barbara Bryan and Ann Harmon, reporters: were in- stalled by Mrs. Ellen Wood. The membership has three degrees toward which to work. The first degree is that of assistant, the second is that of supervisor, the third and highest is that of leader. Leaders have the gold seal on the membership card and wear the pin and may, if voted worthy of special consideration, be permitted to wear the gold emblem key. There are four types of F.B.L.A. membership- active, associate and collegiate. Money-making projects, proceeds of which were used to send delegates to the state convention, include clerical and stenographic work for the faculty, address- ing, stuffing, stamping 10,000 envelopes for the Polio Fund campaign, bake sales, rummage sales, two cos- metic demonstrations and a Linda Lee cosmetic sale contest. The F.H.A. year opened with the election of officers. They were installed in an impressive candlelighting ceremony held November 3rd in the home economics cottage. From November 10th to 13th pledges were seen carrying baby dolls and addressing the senior members as Mother. This is only one example of what the pledges had to do during mock initiation. But their reward came when they were made senior members of the club at the formal initia- tion held November llth. To add money to the fund, the members made and sold mum corsages for the homecoming assembly, parade, and football games October 23rd. Boxes of Christmas cards were sold by the members and bake sales were held throughout the year. November 'l9th, seventy-nine members, two sponsors, and two chapter mothers, Mrs. Cecil Wilson and Mrs. Ivan Mabry attended the District I Federation meeting held in the Student Union Ballroom of the University of Arkansas. The Christmas party was held in the home economics cottage December 17th. Each member brought a gift of clothing, food, or a toy to be given to a needy family. After the Christmas party carols were sung, refreshments were served. The- Masonic Youth Center January 9th was the setting for the annual Smorgasbord and Dance held iointly by the F.H.A. and F.F.A. chapters in honor of Sweetheart, Joyce 'Wilson, and Beau, Jon Sager. After the buffet style dinner, prepared and served by F.H.A. members, dancing and games were enioyed. The highlight of the evening was the corona- tion of the royal couple by the Federation presidents of the two organizations from Siloam Springs. Some members attended the district meeting held at Arkan- sas Tech in Russellville and the state meeting in Little Rock. Some will also attend the summer F.H.A. camp which will be held at Camp Couchdale in Hot Springs. It is hoped that the girls attending these meetings will come back next year and help make the Rogers F.H.A. chapter even better than it is this year.
