E iii XX Presented by the Students of Rogers High School Ream, Arkansas 1953 ..-2 Dedication Nearly eight years ago two sisters came from Texas to accept teaching positions in Rogers High School. Four years later they were assigned the sponsorship of the school annual. Through their diligent labor and their ability to guide the staff in its work, there has been a marked improvement in the book each year. As a tribute to them for this work and with owish for their con- tinued success, we dedicate the 1953 volume of the Mountaineer to our sponsors, Misses Mattie and Della Beeler. fir N B. L. R eporter F. H. A. The Rogers chapter of the F. H. A. started the 1952-53 school year with a very active calendar. Highlights of the year have included dances, bake sales, dinners, taffy pulls, installation of officers, federation meeting, and of course the bi-monthly meetings of the local chapter. The more colorful events started with our Homecoming celebration on Oct. 'l7. The girls made and sold corsages of white mums tied with wide blue ribbon and a blue R resting in the center of the flower. This was very successful and money was added to our treasury. On Sat., Nov. 8, 1952, we held a bake sale at the Linkway store. This also proved successful. As Thanksgiving drew near, we made plans to celebrate with a dance to be held at the Masonic Youth Center on Nov. 26. Both square and ballroom dancing were enjoyed. Music was furnished by the high school orchestra. District l Federation meeting was held Dec. 14, in the Ballroom of the Student Union on the U. of A. campus at Fayetteville. Rogers chapter president, Donna Hardy, who also holds the Federation One presidency, presided over the business session. On Jan. 24, the Masonic Youth Center was again the site of gaiety. The annual FHA-FFA banquet was held in honor of King Buster Ford and Queen Donna Hardy. This year, the royalty was crowned by high ranking members of the respective organizations from Siloam Springs. Following the dinner prepared and served by FHA girls, the evening was spent in dancing. The program was highlighted by the coronation of the King and Queen. This year, we have made much improvement in our organization, and we are looking forward to an even better chapter next year. Sponsored by LEADER VARIETY STORE F. F. A. In September several members of the club exhibited livestock at the Benton County Fair. Garland Ford and Russell May showed championship animals. Thirty-five boys attended the State Livestock Show in Little Rock. ln the ceremony at Springdale, twenty-five of the Rogers boys received the Chapter Farmer Degree. On December fifth the small, fighting Mountaineers found more than they could handle in the large Camden line which held the Blue and White scoreless the first half, but took the sec- ond half kick-off to the Panther's goal with Wolfe, Keck and Love eating up short yardage to the three yard line. There Haynes and Creekmore gave Love an opening to squeeze over the goal. Creekmore kicked a perfect placement. Bentonville is Roger's traditional rival and all the Mountie players were eager to beat the Tigers. The game was a game of long runs for the Mounties with senior halfback, Bob Wolfe, scoring twice on 60 yard- run-backs. The first TD of the game was scored by Rogers Quarterback, Tommy Hewgley, after Tackle, Don Creekmore, recovered a Tiger fumble on the 25 yard line. Rogers fourth TD was made by Fullback Jerry Ferguson in the fifth play of the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers came home the victors of the season's first game. In the first home game of the season the Mountaineers tasted defeat for the first and the last time in regular season play. The Monett Cubs snealxed past Rogers 8-7 on a touchdown and safety. The Mounties outplayed Monett all the way, but the breaks iust weren't right for Rogers, and Monett beat Rogers for the second consecutive time. The Mountaineer's second home stand was a bright spot in an even brighter season. Rogers defeated the Van Buren Pointers 28-O. This was the first time Rogers had beaten Van Buren for many years. This was the first annual Dad's Day game, and the Dads were allowed to witness their sons' playing from a choice seat on the Mountie bench. Statistics proved the Mounties were the better team throughout the game with Rogers gaining a total of 309.5 yards while the Pointers gained only 109.5 yards. Van Buren equalled Rogers in one department with both teams getting 10 first downs. Both teams tried 10 passes with Van Buren completing three and Rogers four. Rogers' TDs were scored by Ferguson, two, and Bloomfield and Baker, one each. Jerry Haynes covered Pointer halfback, Pete Collier, back from the five yard line for a safety in the first quarter. ln the fourth game of the season the Mounties trampled on the Siloam Springs Panthers 27-0. The Panthers was the third and final team to go scoreless against the brilliant defense of the Mountaineers. Siloam got past the 50 yard line only twice during the game, once to the 31 yard line and once to the 26 yard line. Rogers led in the statistics with a total of 288 yards against Siloam's total of 151 yards. The Mounties made 11 first downs while Siloam made only 8. Sd SEB !Z1l...l.l viii fi! 1 Season go. The first quarter saw the Mounties score twice, and it looked as if the game was n the bag, but the keyed-up Eagles come back for blood in the third quarter and ncored twice to tie the game, and the score stayed tied till the fourth quarter when :ull-back Jerry Ferguson went the needed distance to score and put the Mounties ahead :nd eventually win the game. The Mountaineer's homecoming game against the Subiaco Troians was a real test if the Rogers' defense and it proved that the Mounties had what it takes. The Zuniga :nd back combination was almost entirely stemmed by the crafty Rogers defense. The lame which ended with the score of 26-6 Rogers, was dedicated to Franklin Baker, vho was recovering from an iniury received while blocking a punt in the roughest lame of the season, the contest with the Eagles. Although experts all over the state were predicting that Rogers was ready for an vpset by Harrison, the Mounties ignored the prophecy and played to win. This they lid by a score of 19-6. Statistically, Rogers was the leader in every department except ompleted passes. The Mounties gained a total of 346 yards, made 14 first downs, ind completed 2 passes. Harrison completed 3 passes, made 8 first downs, and arned a total of 177 yards. Halloween goblins, hexes and bugaboos didn't bother the Mounties who downed he Springdale Bulldogs 20-14 at Springdale. The Mounties defense was fronted with 1 mammoth task throughout the game. Springdale kicked to Rogers and the Mounties tarted a drive down-field that ended when Ferguson scored from the 8 yard line. ogers' second TD was made by Hewgley who received a pass from Ferguson and an 44 yards to score. Their third and final TD came on a spread formation pass with uarterback Buddy Bloomfield tossing a 25 yard poss to Ferguson who went the rest f the way untouched. November 7 is an important date in the 1952 football season. On this date the lounties won the District I AA football championship, and clinched a place in the tate playoffs by defeating Fayetteville 13-6. This was one of the best defensive games f the season, as the Mountie defense held the Bulldogs to a total gain of 80 yards, 'hile the Mountaineer offense gained a total of 209 yards. Rogers Mountaineers closed the regular season play against the Sequoiah Indians of zhlequah, Oklahoma.
