Frosh Win Big The 1978-79 Freshman Basketball Team shot their way to an 11-5 record, winning their first four games with some fantastic scores. Byron Center, their first opponent, fell before a barrage of points as the Little Hawks racked their way up to a victorious score of 56-29. Calvin Christian,. Rockford, and Wyoming fell to the same ignominious defeat. Chosen for this year ' s Most Valua- ble Players were Greg Opple and Kurt Stevens, while the distinct honor of Most Improved descended upon Kevin Corfixen and Kurt Ste- vens. 4 i The 1978-79 Gymnastics Team New Coach Leads Team to 4th The gymnastics team of 1978-79 won 4th place in conference this year, under their new coach Mr. Res- tino. With a record of 5-5, the team is increasing in both size and ability. Joni Henderson was voted best atti- tude by both the coach and her team- mates. J V Enjoys Successful Season The Junior-Varsity basketball team enjoyed a very successful sea- son with a 17-3 record (11-3 confer- ence) in 1978-79. Topping the year were convincing victories over first place East Kentwood and South Christian (O.K. White Champions). The J-V ' s were victorious over every team in the conference while finish- ing just a game out of first place. Clake VanHulst led the team in scor- ing and assists, while Tim Massel led in rebounds and was second in scor- ing. Tom Hudson was the team leader in steals. Mike Huizenga was voted most improved , Dean DeWildt received the most hustle award, and Steve Chappell was named most valuable . Coach VanAllsburg said the keys to this year ' s team success were dedi- cation, improvement, and teamwork.
