They played tough football and lost by close margins. As the weeks went on they chose dif- ferent captains each week according to their performance in practice that week. In the Class B Regional meet the Hawks fin- ished 3rd and in State Class B Meet finished tied for 9th. Outstanding golfer this year was Lloyd Fisher who finished 5th in the Grandville Invitational and 1st in Regionals. Also, Mike Volk was Honorable Mention All- Conference. They placed 7th in the league. Dinah Bige- low made All-Conference Honorable mention. Karen Kinney and Sue Hoff- man were brought up in tournaments against Godwin. The team won 57-43 in a successful game. Then after advancing on to play Catholic Central, they lost 36-46. Jane Meyers was voted most valuable and Dinah Bieg- low most improved. This year 42 girls tried out and only ten were needed. Carol Far- quhar, the team ' s captain, and Kim Meyers both had best records for an individual, 6-9. They finished 3rd in the OK Red. This year ' s captains were Tim Sagers, honorable mention for All Conference, and Carl Paganelli. Special rec- ognition went to Doug Chappell, All Confer- ence, WOTV All-Stars, Detroit Free Press 1st Team All State, and 3rd team All-State Detroit News. The boys showed willingness to learn and play the game. Steve Chappell and Todd Engstrom were voted most improved, and Dean DeWildt was the most valua- ble player. The 1977-78 Freshman basketball I earn (1.1, Up, up and away Mr. Klein ' s matmen had a smashing sea- son filled with tournament victories and a state champion in heavyweight class. Tour- naments at Spring Lake, Forest Hills, and West Ottawa found the Cardinal and Gold in first place, and they captured second at their own invitational. Captains of the team were seniors Tim Carrel and John Stewart. Also, Tim Bubba Carrel won the State heavyweight class, an occurrence that has only happened one other time in this school ' s history. He, along with the co-cap- tains, Mike Popma, Dennis Heibel, Dave Ralph, and John Figueroa, led the team through a 1 and 3 season. Outstanding team member John Figueroa took first place in tramp at St. John ' s Invitational and also at the conference meet, while Mike Popma took sixth all around at Conference. Under the coach- ing of Marty Grant and Cherry Hostet- ter they took a fifth place at the Kent- wood Invitational. Although their wins were few, they gained more knowl- edge and experience for a hopeful future team. This year ' s captain was Mickey Kaiser with Heather Porter as co-captain. Mickey ' s perfection. This year ' s captain was senior shortstop and ace hitter Don Kinney. According to Coach Norgrove this team was different from others because they were smarter, faster, more consistent and more mature than most. All Conference players were: Tim Carrel, designated hitter; Bob Ketteman, second base; and John Figueroa, outfield. Two new records were established: (1) season batting average .417 set by Bob Ketteman; (2) 1 1 double plays made during the season. The members went out reg- ularly to local Mexican restaurants. 1977-78 Spanish Club VotAStbj Club Athletically minded, the Varsity Club attended three sporting events: a Detroit Tiger baseball game, a Pistons basketball game, and the Golden Glove finals. The club gained financial assistance to the school by remodeling the weight room and presenting the school with a marble sign with the school ' s name on it. The club seventy-five strong went skiing almost every Thursday night from mid- December to the end of March. The annual trip up north was at Caberfae this year. ' s at channel L, a designated government access chan- nel. Both students are talented and have been working for about 8 months. As a special token, an athlete ' s mother purchased flowers for all of the Varsity coaches to express her appreciation for their efforts. We sincerely thank Mrs. Williams for this thoughtful gesture. After 15 years of dedicated service as teacher and vice-principal, Mr. Bramble leaves to be Director of Business and Industry with Community Education. Mr. Waddel has taught in the business department for 13 years and retires now from the teaching profession.
