DesptfeftyuAies Our JV Squad was really broken up about this year ' s season as Shelly Hanrahan and Lisa Lubbinge sported broken arms, and Cathy Peterson suf- fered from a bruised foot caused, by all things, a falling roll of paper. Receiving a 2nd place award at Wyoming ' s clinic, the girls had an active season supporting the football and basketball teams. N. K VOAStty P tfounS abPotdicub Varsity Cheerleaders contin- ued winning trophies as they took a 2nd place at Walden Wood and 1st place at Wyoming Park ' s Fall Clinic. A high point of their year occurred when they performed at the Pontiac Silver Dome for the North-South Shrine game. In the Regionals Jeff placed second while John placed fourth which qualified both wrestlers to advance to the state competition. Jeff Klomparens, the only senior on the team, concluded his season with a fine record of 35-5. In Jeff ' s total career of varsity wrestling, he earned over 100 wins. The young Hawks pulled a few surprises by upsetting Jenison and Kentwood during the regular season, and pulled one of the biggest upsets of the District Tournaments by defeating West Catholic in the opening game. Sophomore Doug Chappel made OK Red All Conference and led the Hawks in scor- ing and rebounding, while junior Tim Sagers led the team in assists and steals . QwittUit lS QtCUj AQbet The Boys Swim Team began their season very well by taking 3rd place in the Hudsonville Relays, which is good since they are in the toughest league in the state . Highlights of the season were Mike Erickson and Brian Varano going on to the state finals and all of the new school records that were set by Brian Varano, Dan Reese, Chuck Wood, Christ Bart- rand, Mike Erickson, and Randy Childs. Carol Farquhar again made the all conference team. What the team lacked in talent, they made up for enthusiasm. Baseball Team was led in hitting by Mike Dryer with a lusty .418 average and he was also voted most valuable player by his team- mates. Brian Christensen and Mark Kneibel were our leading pitchers and received able support from Doug Chappel, Ray Espinoza, and Mike Dryer, who served as spot starting pitchers. The team made steady improvement during the year and had a great attitude. Our over- all record was 5 wins and 11 losses and every game was close enough so that a key hit could have won it for us . K. 1976-1977 Varsity Baseball Team. ttOvcb Girls Softball Team, with outstanding pitchers, Nellie Espinoza and Vienna VanK- ampen, had a fine season. The team, under the coaching of Mr. Hudson, played in the Moline tournament, a first for our girls. So that all girls could participate , A and B teams were created. Beating Northview, East Grand Rapids, and West Ottawa, they were 3-4 in dual meets. This year ' s seniors did an out- standing job. Mike Erickson was the team point leader and was all confer- ence in 3 events, the 330 low hurdles, 440 and 220 . Also the mile relay team consisting of Tim Bartrand, Brian Ruhl, Mark Poelman, and Sean Barth had the second best time in the state. For the first time Rogers had a girls track team consisting of Sandy Camp- bell, Kari Lind, Stacy Sjaarda, Dawn Wilhout, Connie Morris, Anne Nose- worthy, and Jenny Tyler. V- It %m c. In April seven students, accompanied by Mr. Milanowski , spent a week in Washington D.C. in a close-up of our national gov- ernment. Semite f$ tkbfCey The Key and Keyette club held their monthly meetings plus attended Kiwanis luncheons. Their activities included tutoring at Buchanon Elementary School, going to banquets and workshops, but the highlight of the whole year was attending the State conven- tion in Port Huron. A. Exciting events the group participated in included a pizza party and a picnic. f Ctucl vb Congress Student Congress was active this year, rewriting the consti- tution, reading the daily announcements, participating in a student exchange day, and making many plans for the future which included some landscaping ideas, a new m ethod of election to Student Congress and plans to take over student parking. Owu Ckoiv ill Building voices and develop- ing personal and musical atti- tudes were the main objectives of the 1976-77 Concert Choir. Many of the choir members sang solos in their mini concerts and participated in concerts held at Godwin and Kentwood High Schools. IBSlM ii This year, the ensemble was a new body of musicians. The members came from both of the main choirs. Although they organized late in the year, the Ensemble sang at the Boat Show, the Christmas concert, and the elementary and junior high tours . In addition Greg Chandler, Lynn Kelly, Jody Nelson, and Dawn Slabbekorn went to the District Solo and Ensemble Festival, and Lynn Kelly, Jody Nelson went on to the State Festival . A. In the musi- cal note , they performed for the Miss Wyoming pageant, Jazz Festival, Band Festival, and played for all home football and basketball games. Fowtstcs QprnkOub Senior Betsy Schek brought home honors to Rogers as she won District Forensics competi- tion in Extemporaneous Speak- ing and qualified as a state finalist at Ann Arbor. Other winners during the season were Penny Dean, Penny Tudor, Chirs Golembiewski, Jim Bur- ton, Bob Jones; Dan Joyce and Mary Hubble in multiply read- ing; and Dave Freund in story telling . A. All together class. ■ BuM Mouses 30 boys from Rogers and Wyo- ming Park, under the direction of Mr. Ekema, received first hand experience as they built two houses and decorated their interiors and exteriors. These houses, located on 34th Street, are sold to the public . During their Junior or Senior year, students have the opportu- nity to attend Kent Skill Cen- ter. Among the courses offered are: cosmetology, accounting, auto mechanics, and data proc- essing. Approximately 70 stu- dents were involved in this pro- gram. Mr. Ekema takes a coffee break. With their advisor, Mr. Pell, they went to the slopes of Cannonsburg and had a super time every Thursday . Vcvtstty Cluh The Varsity Club met the first Monday of the month. Besides keeping the popcorn going on Fridays 7th hour and after school, they had initiations, pizza parties, attended the Golden Gloves, and a Piston basketball game. They ran the Canteen at all home games and other events that took place at school. This year the President was Dean Coates; Vice Presi- dent, Don Bigelow; Secretary, Dale Bremer; Treasurer, Rob Wellington; and Sergeant-at- Arms; Jeff Klomparens. A.
