Strength is found. An adult rises From the impulsive youth - Prepared to accept defeats, Expecting them, Prepared to rise again after defeat For a victory. A pure heart And a working mind Are the tools, Life - the broken object. Grateful for the understanding hearts Which have led us safely out of youth, We must now say goodbye, With only memory, the comforter. CLASS POEM 1 ssm Class IVe, the Class of 1956, being of sound body and a rather questionable state of mind, do hereby declare this to be our last Will and Testament. The red brick building -1' was miffhtv big and lonesome that first dav, but F ' 'L 5 'N we were able to speak for ourselves! XVe elected Io-Ann Scott and Richard Olson to represent us ' in Student Council. Our own paper - the Cub Chronicle edited bv Rov Bve was exciting in that it was especiallv ours. We entered the Sci ence Fair and even won Grants! You know Steve Matson won every year that he was in high school ' . . . ' D That summer quickly Hew until once again the clang of bells rang through 1 the old halls. Being a little older, we could enter more activities. Youive heard of the 'isophoinore shunpn? lid love to say that the Class of '56 avoided such a pitfallg but nope, I'd say we slumped as much as most. Now don't get upset, Dear Diary. its only an expression. Sophomore year was the first time we felt we wanted to he a part of the school. In Student Council the Class of 1956 was represented by Phyllis Klosher, Harris Sperling, lack Fucile, and Beverly Towle. The sophomore girls who were chosen to Cheer For Rogers were , Jackie Con- nelly. Cynthia Harnniett, Nancy Reinstein, and Bev- erly Towle. Were they thrilled! During the summer following sophomore year we had a visit from a lady named Carol - the hurrieanel XXI' lost part of the Cliff Hulk. hut by September things had calmed down and we were juniors! Our class elected Donald Eirich as President, Ann Chase ? as Vice-President. Marjorie Uttilige as Secretary and X Harris Sperling as Treasurer. i'Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom Whiten was the theme ot our junior Prom IR which 'lean Biastre and XVayne Hatch powered as co- I chairmen of the Social Committee with the aid of the ,Q 5 Class advisors, Nliss Margaret Phelan and Xlr. There was much to be done - and done CLASS HISTORY K 91 J well. Our six members for the Student Council were Carolyn Silvia, Frank Ot- tilige, Phyllis Mosher, Sally Lightbody, jack Fucile, and Bill Sant. VVhen the Seniors left in june, there were offices to be filled. Something new was added, Dear Diary, the Head Coach of the Football Team, Mr. Phil Coen. I remembered that a poem in THE RED AND BLACK said just how we felt about Coach Coen. N - But think of us poor lookers on - NVho watch while wind is blowin, - And think of our exultant coach - The one and only Coenf' junior summer was so special! Remember those long, lazy days, the laughter, and the parties? By September Qtwo weeks late be- cause of polio! we were itching to 'ctake the reinsf, School this time was different. Bight away we began to realize that graduation was really just around the corner. We chose that man Harris Sperling as Presi- dent. Helping him were Margie Ottilige - Vice Presi- dent, Phyllis Ponte - Secretary, and YVally F arnum - Treasurer. Carol VVhitaker won the Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. VVOVV! NVhat a Thanksgiving Day Came that was! We cheered, we pleaded, we begged, and We fought our way to a 50-O victory over De La Salle. So far the school dances were so successful as to draw special comment from Mr. Donnelly! You must remember the B.O.T.C. Ball on December 2. Ann Chase was chosen Co-ed Colonel, the Armory was heaven , and hearts beat in rhythm with our snappy drill team. Miriam Kitch won the state Voice of Democracy Contest. With the lhonor went a T. V. set, and a chance to enter the national competition. Our social commit- te planned the Snowbound Informal . HA! VVe nearly were snowbound at that! At the half year teachers calmly announced we were to have mid- year exams. Horrid thought! The whirl of school slowed as We sat down to study. After Easter vaca- tion we had Pep Nite! Xvllllkllll Sinnott and Herbie Rlalzaclier Caine in 13th and 15th out of 65 other runners. Cross-country is probably one of the niost difficult sports at Rogers in phy- sical eflort. During practice the boys run izlrout 3 miles ll clay. ln a meet, the Course is longer and rougher. Much credit should be given to the runners for wanting to win for Rogers. Credit also goes to the Coach Richard Fitzgerald, who is a fine coach and who believes that crorzs-country teaches the bor.: how to Work hard and .how to Work together. At special school programs, such as Parents' Night, they are our ushers. ln the fall of every year they entertain all new girls in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes at a MGet-Acquainted Party. These are the girls you see checking books in and out, putting your encyclopedias and magazines back on the shelves, and repairing torn books. More than thirty of these girls give up their time in order to make our library a success. The freshmen serve as pages, while the upperclassmen learn the techniques of running a library under the guidance of Mrs. Beagan. Mrs. Beagan is one of the first people freshmen meet at Rogers. Her patience Qhas come to be a by-word in the school. NVhat's more, she has a wonderful faculty for remembering names. She's sure to make you feel at home! Under her guidance, with the help of the Library Auxiliary, our library has become a really nice place to study or to browse. 4 134 I C74 Ivory Snort Kplaly - xgoogroom ggenfinefs lst row il-1 I: L.
