OMMANDER Carroll Doyle Clark, United States Navy, was born in Rodney, Iowa, in 1926. He received his early education in Iowa public schools, and upon gradu- ation from high school in 1944, enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet CV-55 Program. Transferring to the NROTC program, he attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, and Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating from the latter with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1946. His commissioning as an Ensign in the Naval Re- serve was followed initially by assignment to Auxiliaries. He subsequently transferred to the Regular Navy, and was assigned as Second Division and After Battery Of- ficer to the USS Leyte CCV 325, employed in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In 1949 he reported to the USS Min- doro CCVE 1205, as Gunnery Division Officer, later as Radio Officer fleeting up to Communications Officer. In 1951 he reported for duty to Commander Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. A year later he commenced train- ing with Underwater Demolition Training Unit tt ONE and, upon graduation, reported to UDT it ONE for United Nations Operations in Korea. He attended Line School at Monteray, California in 1954, and then reported as Operations Officer to USS Lyman K, Swenson CDD 7295 at Long Beach, California. . From August 1957 through May 1959, he served as head of UDT training in Little Creek, Virginia. During this period he revamped UDT training and also won parachutist wings at Fort Benning, Georgia. Commander Clark deployed again to Seventh Fleet in June of 1959, this time as Executive Officer aboard USS Picking CDD 6855. Detached from the Picking in October 1960, he assumed command of USS Grapple CARS 75, in Pearl Harbor, that November. He then reported to the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, where he completed the Command and Staff and the Naval Warfare Courses, and served two years on the staff of the senior course. Upon completion of this duty, he reported aboard USS Rogers CDD 8765 on 3 July 1965 for duty as Commanding Officer. Commander Clark is married to the former Carolyn Grey Dorn of San Mateo, California and has two children, Linda Carol, 8, and Darwin Lawrence, 3. COMMANDING OFFICER Look at that rat's nest! 35
