ROGERS SOFTBALL Maybe if I used a five iron . . . Lifer heads for home ISPLAYING undaunted enthusiasm to make up for their limited number of practice sessions, the Rogers softball team was a credit to the ship all the way. The team began the season by soundly defeating the Coontz 15 to 3 at Pearl Harbor. Later action saw our men face the Filipino Athletic Club of the Hong Kong Softball League, Rogers athletes played an excellent game in that Kowloon classic, but were edged 6 to 3. Improving with each game, our men decided to challenge the virtually shore-based USS Ajax at Subic Bay. The result was less than glorious, with the Ajax winning 15 to 5. We played next against the Shimoda A11- Stars at the Black Ship Festival. The team looked much better but was still edged 17 to 13. Having missed spring training due to certain oper- ational limitations, the Rogers softball team made its final stand at Yokosuka. Lack of practice and errors cost us the first game against the USS Osbourne 14-12. But the season did end in victory. After six months of prodding the officers and chiefs finally accepted the crew's softball challenge. The crew toyed briefly with their opponents, and won handily 12 to 10. CEd. note: The above paragraph does not necessarily represent the official and objective opinion of this cruise- book. Anyway . . . wait 'til next year, Meanwhile, the officers hereby challenge the crew to a slotcar race anywhere, anytime.
